  • Patent number: 6010025
Abstract: The invention relates to a lid for tins, cans and the like, which lid is made of a layer of sheet metal or plastic that is attached to the wall (3) of the container by means of a seam-folded or other type of joint. The lid has a groove (5) in which the tip of a spoon or other suitable utensil can be inserted so that the latter can act as a lever therein and open the lid by tearing the material along a first line of weakness (6) located on the bottom of the groove (5). The lid advantageously has a second line of weakness (7) that is located in the area where the cross section of the groove (5), which is essentially U-shaped, joins the central portion of the lid; this second line of weakness contributes to weakening the lid material locally, in the above mentioned area, thereby enhancing the leverage exerted in order to open the lid.

  • Patent number: 6003715
Abstract: The air vent has a body with a central axis, a top end, a bottom end, a flat surface on the top end and a flat surface on the bottom end. A gripping surface extends from the top flat surface to a stop surface that is transverse to the axis. The small diameter end of an upper conical surface joins the stop surface. A large diameter end of a lower conical surface joins the large diameter end of the upper conical surface. A cutting edge formed by the flat bottom surface and the lower conical surface pierces a container when the air vent is forced into the container. The lower conical surface expands the opening made by the cutting edge. The stop surface limits penetration and the upper conical surface urges the container wall toward the stop surface. An air vent passage through the top flat surface and the bottom flat surface lets air into the container. A cap closes the air vent passage. The air vent is removed from an empty container for use in another container.

  • Patent number: 5538154
Abstract: A snap-on flexible lid for a container comprises a flat lid face and an annular, peripheral flange extending normally of the lid face to enclose and grip an annular lip of a container. The term "annular" is intended to include all closed loops, for example those of rectangular containers. The flange comprises spaced panels angled inwardly from the remainder of the flange to engage the underside of the container lip. This promotes retention of the lid on the container and permits a container where the flange is essentially free of circumferential tear lines, avoiding problems of lid pop-off, and undesired tearing of the circumferential tear lines in the event the container is dropped. The angled panels are defined between pairs of cutting apertures to permit the separation of the sections defining the panels by a pair of vertical cuts, for opening of the container.

Abstract: Wastes are placed in a container, and the container is closed by a lid having a port sealed by a disc. A cutting tool having a hollow drive stem pierces the disc. A grout slurry is fed through the stem so as to discharge into the container and embed the wastes in the grout when set. The wastes may be contained in a crate in the container, and may also take the form of a glove box which itself contains waste objects.

  • Patent number: 5150802
Abstract: A cap apparatus includes a cylindrical cap body hingedly mounting a lid thereto, wherein the lid includes a rigid lid arm projecting exteriorly of the lid, including an "L" shaped spring leg arranged to maintain the lid arm in an orthogonal orientation relative to a conduit bore directed through the cap body. A conical piercing cone is mounted to a bottom surface of the lid projecting interiorly of the conduit bore to effect piercing of a seal member of an associated container, wherein the cap body includes a plurality of spring clips arranged to secure the cap body relative to the associated container. A modification of the invention includes the cap member apparatus defined as spaced flanges utilizing a piercing cone coaxially aligned with a presser plate to effect the clamping and piercing of a fluid container therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5148937
Abstract: A cap is disclosed, for use on a container having a neck defining an opening sealed by a protective foil that has to be removed when the container is used for the very first time. The cap comprises a top sized to close the opening and a peripheral skirt that projects from the top and is detachably connectable to the wall of the neck. The cap also comprises at least one and preferably two open slots made in the skirt, the slots extending at angle from the bottom edge of the slot and being wide engage to receive the wall of the neck. The slots make the skirt to define spikes that preferably are oppositely oriented for use by right-handed or left-handed persons to perforate and remove the protective foil sealing the neck of the container when the latter has to be opened for the very first time.

  • Patent number: 5094361
Abstract: A closure for a rigid or deformable container. The contents of the container are protected by a seal. The closure has a bottom part and a cap fixed thereon by a hinge. The lower part is closed by a cover face, through which only a pouring spout extends. A tear-off element is positioned on an underside of the cap in such a way that it extends through the pouring spout as far as the seal located below it. The tear-off element is in active contact with the seal, for example, it is bonded or glued to it. At the time of a first opening, the tear-off element pulls the seal upwards, which is simultaneously broken by a cutting element below the pouring spout. Such closures are structurally simple in their manufacture as well as in operation and can be attached to various types of containers.

  • Patent number: 5071302
Abstract: This relates to the double seaming of an end unit to a metal can body where the end unit is of the full opening, easy opening type incorporating a pull tab for the purpose of initiating a rupture followed by pull out of an end panel of the end unit. Most specifically, the end unit is of an oblong rectangular or generally other than round outline so as to have a fixed orientation with respect to a double seam forming double seaming chuck. By having a fixed relationship between each end unit and the double seaming chuck and the pull tab with respect to the configuration of the end unit, it is possible to form a notch in the underside of the double seaming chuck to clear the pull tab. This permits the pull tab to have a force applying nose thereof positioned closely adjacent to a chuck wall of the end unit so that it may overlie a score line or weakening line formed in the chuck wall radius between the chuck wall and the end panel.

  • Patent number: 5025945
Abstract: A liquid container comprises an open topped vessel of generally rectangular cross-section which tapers from top to bottom and has a lid pivoted to one side wall. The lid has projecting puncture structure which pierces the top of a sealed, semi-rigid package of a beverage, such as fruit juice, when the package is located in the vessel and the lid is closed. A slider closure member is mounted in a slideway structure on the top of the lid so as to be slidable along a rectilinear path over two apertures to either close or open both the apertures. The apertures communicate with the interior of the semi-rigid package in the vessel via passage in the puncture structure when the lid is closed. One aperture is an outlet through which liquid is poured and the other is a vent hole. Recesses in each side wall are provided for holding the package.

  • Patent number: 4988012
Abstract: A closure is provided for selectively closing an opening of a container, including a base element arranged to be affixed to a container adjacent an opening therein. In one embodiment, the closure is provided with tamper-evident film fixed to the base element, and a control element is pivotally movable relative to the base element between open and closed positions. When the base element is affixed to the container, the tamper-evident film obstructs the container opening. When the control element pivots to the open position, the tamper-evident film is visible, and can be punctured or otherwise removed. According to another embodiment of the invention, a closure is provided for a container having a tamper-evident film secured thereto overlying the opening in a container.
