  • Patent number: 4140040
Abstract: A device for locking an insert in a support having a receiving hole or sealing a tubular member such as a pipe, consists of a somewhat bottle-shaped bushing having a cylindrical collar or bushing portion, and a conical portion secured at its narrow end to said collar, an inside screw thread, and a locking ring seated on the cone adjacent to the collar. The dimensions of the collar section of the bushing, the cone and the locking ring are so correlated that bushing and locking ring fit the cross-section of the hole with slight friction when the insert is placed in the hole. Locking of the insert in the hole is effected by inserting a screw bolt or screw tightening means into the insert coaxial therewith. This causes lifting of the insert which in turn effects spreading of the locking ring thereby pressing the same against the wall of the hole.

  • Patent number: 4138030
Abstract: There is provided a joint between a pressure vessel lid and a pressure vessel. The vessel is intended for very high pressures and of the type comprising a thinwalled container which is supported by an external rigid support structure, such that the container provides the vessel tightness and the structure provides the vessel strength. The lid is clamped onto a container rim by means of screws via blocks. An annular shoulder is fixed to the support structure above the container rim. There is an axial play between the blocks and the shoulder. This play is adapted to be eliminated for a relatively low container pressurization at which the yield limit of the container material is reached. The screws merely have to provide the clamping force required to ensure the vessel tightness until the blocks abut the shoulder, whereafter a further container pressurization provides the necessary lid clamping force.

  • Patent number: 4113564
Abstract: An apparatus for sealing the annulus defined between a substantially cylindrical rotatable first riser assembly and plug combination disposed in a substantially cylindrical second riser assembly and plug combination of a nuclear reactor system. The apparatus comprises a flexible member disposed between the first and second riser components and attached to a metal member which is attached to an actuating mechanism. When the actuating mechanism is not actuated, the flexible member does not contact the riser components thus allowing the free rotation of the riser components. When desired, the actuating mechanism causes the flexible member to contact the first and second riser components in a manner to block the annulus defined between the riser components, thereby sealing the annulus between the riser components.

  • Patent number: 3991903
Abstract: Described herein is a structure for attachment of two parts of a valve structure in a pressure-tight leakproof relationship, which employs a minimum number of parts and may be quickly disassembled, but which is nonetheless strong, rugged, and durable. This structure includes a first member having two pairs of spaced-apart lugs protruding in a direction generally parallel to the axis of an opening in the first member. A second member is provided which extends into the opening and includes two ears, each ear being adapted for placement between two lugs. The lugs are provided with matching transverse holes, whereby a bolt or pin may be placed through one lug of a pair, then over a portion of an ear, then into the second lug of the pair for securing the two members together in a predetermined relationship. Means are provided for detection of internal pressure in the valve to prevent disassembly thereof prior to removal of the pressure.

  • Patent number: 3974933
Abstract: When electrical equipment is used in a hazardous atmosphere, it must be enclosed in an explosion proof enclosure so an electrical spark cannot cause a fire or explosion. The present invention provides a means for assuring that an explosion proof enclosure which has been opened for inspection, repair or adjustment of the electrical apparatus is restored to its original condition. To this end, a visually inspectable locking means is provided. The locking means can be engaged only when the enclosure compartment and its associated cover are restored to their original explosion proof relationship. The locking means does not exert any distorting force on the mating threads of the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 3955707
Abstract: A reusable closure for containers having an opening in a surface thereof. A seal of size and shape sufficient to cover the opening in the container and having a bore therethrough is positioned such that the bore generally is aligned with a portion of the opening including opposed edges thereof. A threaded cap has a diameter less than that of the bore, whereby threaded engagement between the cap and opposed edges of the opening is achieved. Tightening the cap holds the seal firmly in place, thereby maintaining a positive closure of the opening. The seal may abut a lip of the container thereby restricting lateral movement of the cap. The seal and the threaded cap may be separate elements or of integral construction. The invention is particularly suited for use in containers having a convenience opening known as pop-top cans.
