Abstract: A server lid for a container with an integral tear strip tamper evident feature is presented. A tear strip for the tamper evident feature is molded as an adjunct to a base member which forms the closure. The tear strip is joined to the base by at least one frangible web, and hinges about the frangible web to overlie front edges of one or more flaps formed in the server lid. Ultrasonic welds connect the overlying tear strip to the flaps or adjacent the flaps for providing a tamper evident feature. The shape of the server lid provides stackability in that the base rim of the container will fit over the upper portion of the lid, including frangible webs to allow interfitting of one container bottom with the container closure of the next, to allow the containers to be stacked on a shelf without substantial danger of slipping or tipping.

Abstract: Receptacles are thermoformed in a strip of thermoplastic material, filled with a substance, and covered by capsules formed in a capsule strip. Prior to applying the capsule strip onto the thermoplastic strip, a preliminary cut is made for each receptacle in a station through the thermoplastic strip, thereby defining a portion of the outline of the edge of the receptacle. While the receptacles and their capsules are being cut out from the strips, a through cut is made for each receptacle in a station, the through cut passing through the thermoplastic strip and the capsule strip over a portion of the remainder of the outline of the receptacle, and a complementary cut is formed which passes through the capsule strip alone, which is connected to the through cut, and which, for each receptacle, defines a portion of the capsule strip that forms a pull tab.

  • Publication number: 20040118852
Abstract: A package for storing and shipping food products incorporates a multilayer film lid that includes a gas-impermeable exterior layer and a gas-permeable interior layer. The multilayer film lid is heat sealed to a flange of a tray upon which the food product is supported. The gas-impermeable layer may be delaminated from the gas-permeable layer when it is desired to expose the food to atmospheric gases. Separation of the gas-impermeable layer from the gas-permeable layer is facilitated by a film fracture feature included in the heat seal pattern adjacent a pull tab of the lid. The film fracture feature concentrates the separation forces exerted on the tab in a small area so that the gas-permeable layer of the lid readily breaks at the film fracture feature.
