The stem is tightly surrounded by a sealing and retention boot, which has a lower flange located just above the stem foot, which is larger than the stem foot. The stem foot is smaller than the installation hole in the manifold wall, while the boot flange is larger, but flexible. The sensor is installed by inserting the probe and surrounding boot together through the hole, with the flange flexing as it passes through.
