Abstract: A method of producing a tubular device is provided. The method comprises providing a tubular stock having an axial passage, heating the tubular stock at a first heating location to form a softened section, the softened section separating a workpiece portion of the tubular stock from a remaining portion of the tubular stock, and drawing the workpiece portion away from the remaining portion to elongate the softened section and separate the workpiece portion from the remaining portion to form the tubular device. The drawing is performed at a rate such that the tubular device has an axial passage having a substantially uniform inside diameter, and an end of the tubular device formed from the elongated softened section is tapered.

  • Patent number: 6870129
Abstract: The cutting of the flat glass plate (1) into rectangular plates with a predetermined edge length is performed by forming initial cracks at the beginning of cutting lines on the glass plate and moving a laser beam along the cutting lines followed by a cooling spot to induce a thermo-mechanical stress alone the cutting lines. First the glass plate (1) is cut apart into partial plates (2-5) along first parallel cutting lines spaced according to the predetermined edge length. Then the cut apart glass plate is rotated by 90° and the partial plates (2-5) are moved apart from each other. Subsequently the partial plates that have been moved apart are cut apart alone several parallel second cuts (4-9) perpendicular to the first cuts. This method facilitates exact placement of the initial cracks.

  • Publication number: 20040182903
Abstract: A method and apparatus for separating glass panels that minimizes process failures and improves separation process consistency by utilizing a separation handle which applies the minimal pressure necessary to remove the edge portion from the glass panel. The glass panel is cut along the score line, which outlines the edge portions of the glass panel to be removed. The panel is placed upon the separating apparatus, which pumps nitrogen along the underside of the glass panel, causing the glass panel to float above the apparatus. Locating pins are inserted to position the panel on the stage. Once the glass panel is in place, a vacuum sucks the panel against the stage, holding the panel tightly against the stage. The separation handle is then inserted over the edge portion to be removed. A measured force is applied to the handle, with the force incrementally increased until the slow, controllable separation of the edge is achieved. This level of force is maintained until separation is complete.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a glass blank having a predetermined contour from a plate glass. In this method, first, the plate glass PG is scored with an outline OL surrounding a part GB to be the glass blank. Next, the plate glass is scored with cutting lines CL connecting the outline with the outer edge of the plate glass. Thereafter, the plate glass is substantially horizontally supported such that only the inner part inside the outline is kept into contact with a support and the other part is floated. Finally, the plate glass is broken along the cutting lines and the outline by blowing hot air onto the outline and the outline to generate thermal stress on the plate glass along the cutting lines and the outline. Thus, the glass blank of which the edge is flawless is obtained.

  • Patent number: 6708857
Abstract: A method is provided for cutting a glass duct, whereby the glass duct can be cut off completely straight. In this method, the coating layer is first cut through all round at the axial location of the fiber where the fiber is to be notched before the notching and subsequent breaking off of the glass duct. To enable the use of this method for glass ducts of varying diameters, the glass duct can be retained in a fixed position during cutting, while a cutting member, as well as a counterpressure surface for the cutting member, are moved all round the glass duct. Because glass ducts of a relatively small diameter are pressed further sidewards by the cutting member than glass ducts of greater diameter, this method effectively limits this sidewards displacement to prevent the glass ducts from breaking in an unintended manner.

Abstract: The cutting of these rectangular plates with predetermined edge lengths is typically effected by means of a laser, which is displaced along the cutting lines, in conjunction with a trailing cooling spot for inducing a thermomechanical stress that is greater than the breaking strength of the glass, and by means of a mechanically induced initial crack at the beginning of the cutting line. When the flat glass plate (1) is in an initial position, a number of parallel first cutting lines (1-3) are made. Afterwards, the flat glass plate (1) that is cut up in such a manner is rotated 90°, and the partial plates (2-5) are moved apart by virtue of the fact that a displaceable table segment of a cutting table is assigned to each partial plate. In this position, several parallel second cuts (4-9) are then made that are perpendicular to the first cuts, whereby, on each partial plate, an initial crack is induced on the leading edge.

Abstract: In order to very considerably reduce the required space in an interim buffer (80) and entailed in a method for dividing glass plates (P) into cut pieces, and in order to clearly reduce the transit times of different kinds of glasses, a sequence of sub-plates (T) is generated from the glass plates (P) stored in a blank plate storage (12), the consecutive sub-plates (T) of said sequence of sub-plates exhibiting identical or different material properties. Each sub-plate (T) is subdivided further by scribing and breaking-off until a desired cut piece has been attained. The generated cut pieces are deposited in a predetermined order in the interim buffer (80) and as called for are processed further.

Abstract: Apparatus for dispensing paper toweling includes a rotatable toweling support roller and a cutter blade pivotally mounted on the outer peripheral portion of the roller. The blade is movable between a first position in which the cutting edge of the blade is positioned closely adjacent to the outer peripheral portion and a second position in which the blade is disposed at an angle relative to the outer peripheral portion with the cutting edge of the blade spaced from the toweling support roller. The cutter blade when in the second position projects in a direction generally opposed to the direction of rotation of the toweling support roller so that pulling force exerted on the toweling by a user will bear against the cutting edge of the cutter blade to sever the toweling.

Abstract: A method of producing a semiconductor device of the present invention is applicable to a multilayer wafer for leadless chip carrier packages and breaks it on a package basis. The method begins with a step of forming a generally V-shaped groove in one major surfaces of the wafer in the direction of thickness of the wafer. A weak, cleaving portion is formed in the other major surface of the wafer in alignment with the groove. A cleaving force is exerted on the wafer to thereby form a break in the cleaving portion, so that the wafer is caused to break from the groove toward the cleaving portion in the direction of thickness of the wafer. The cleaving portion may be replaced with a strong, non-cleaving portion, in which case the break is formed in the interface between the non-cleaving portion and the wafer due to a difference in cleaving force.
