  • Patent number: 5816127
Abstract: A continuous cutter for severing pieces of equal length from a coiled elongate article "T" includes a movable stand which carries a shiftable clamp. The cutter also includes a fixed clamp. The shiftable and fixed clamps are driven relatively to one another to clamp or unclamp the article "T" fed from an uncoiler and to advance it in an intermittent manner for the production of flat tubes used to construct a heat exchanger. For this purpose, a cutter blade on the movable stand severs the elongate article into lengths during the forward advance of the stand, in such a manner that the lengths are cut accurately, efficiently and at a reduced production cost. A stretcher may be added to the cutter in order to impart a the moving article "T".

  • Patent number: 5791539
Abstract: Method and apparatus for separating a bundle of blank pieces from a stack of sheets. The apparatus has a frame and a subframe which pivots with respect to the frame. The frame and subframe each have a clamp for clamping the stack of sheets along a stack plane and the bundle portion to be separated from the stack along a separation plane that intersects the stack plane. The subframe pivots with respect to the frame, bending the stack to cause the bundle portion to be separated from the remainder of the stack in such a way that separation is initiated at one point along the stack rather than across the whole stack or across an entire sheet of the stack. The subframe pivots about an axis that is skewed with respect to at least one of the planes to produce the described effect.

  • Patent number: 5773318
Abstract: The specification describes techniques for cleaving crystal bodies, e.g. semiconductor laser bars, using thermostatic cleaving tools. Use of such tools allows the cleaving process to occur in an ultra high vacuum chamber without the use of mechanical devices activated from the exterior of the chamber. Cleaving occurs automatically and controllably by locally heating the cleaving tools, thereby deflecting the thermostatic element against the laser bar and causing fracture.

One of the upper pads is designed to shift with respect to its corresponding lower pad; when a fiber is clamped between these pads and the upper pad moves, the fibers twist as a result of the induced torsional load. When the fibers are scored and cleaved while in the twisted state, the resulting end faces are at an oblique angle with respect to the fiber axes, which is beneficial since this reduces signal reflections at the fiber-to-fiber interfaces.

Abstract: A heavy duty bead remover for vehicle passenger and heavy duty tires wherein the bead is hooked at a circumferential point and drawn through a narrow transversely slotted aperture, thereby to tear the bead from the tire and pull it through the aperture. Adjustable pressure jaws are provided to clamp the bead to the hook, and further a curved guide adjacent the slotted aperture is provided to reduce draw and tear forces. The tire is preferably specially cut prior to tear removal of the bead.

  • Patent number: 5314523
Abstract: An outline is cut in a glass sheet to form an inner zone and an outer marginal zone. The glass sheet is positioned on a support which supports the inner zone and marginal zone from below. A carrier is arranged such that suction pads thereof adhere to the inner zone, and such that a beveled bottom surface of a mechanical removing device carried by the carriage contacts an outer edge of the marginal zone. When the carriage is raised, the suction pads move up relative to the mechanical removing device. The inner zone is raised, but the outer edge of the marginal zone is restrained against upward movement by the mechanical removing device so that the marginal zone breaks along the outline.

  • Patent number: 5310104
Abstract: The invention discloses a novel method and apparatus for cleaving semiconductor wafers into individual die which comprises mounting the wafer upon an adherent resilient air impermeable membrane while the latter is flat. Cleaving is achieved by using air pressure to inflate the membrane to cause bending and tensile stresses on the wafer brought about by its adhesion to the inflating membrane. These stresses cleave the wafer along the scribe marks to form individual die. The die may be easily removed by the application of a vacuum to the underside of the membrane which draws it against a perforated undulatory grid dimensioned according to the die dimensions to reduce the surface contact. This reduces adhesion of the die to the membrane to facilitate a low stress pick-off of the die.

Abstract: A method of, and apparatus for, separating a sheet of glass along a score line on the sheet. The method comprises flexing the glass at the score line along an axis of flexure on the support to pre-stress the glass to a level below the critical stress level, and initiating a break at one end of the score line. The apparatus comprises a support for the sheet, the support defining an axis of flexure for alignment with the score line, at least one movable pressure member spaced above and on one side of the score line, a press head to move the pressure member into contact with the sheet of glass to pre-stress the sheet at the score line, and a break initiator at one end of the score line.

  • Patent number: 5297710
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for dividing a flat glass panel (14) are described. The panel (14) which is to be divided and which is raised away from its substrate is securely held in its part regions by two clamping devices (10, 12) which are pivoted in opposite directions about a common pivot axle (4) and thus exert on the panel (14) a bending resulting in breakage along the score line (30). Simultaneously exerted on the clamping devices (10) which are, moreover, arranged to be displaceable in the direction of their connection line is a force which presses the clamping devices apart and which at the moment of breakage of the glass panel results in the two part panels moving apart, so that the broken edges cannot strike against one another. The part panels can be deposited again on a substrate after breaking. The invention further provides for marginal strips to be broken off the panel (14) to be divided, in the raised state thereof directly before dividing.

  • Patent number: 5249345
Abstract: A method of severing an elongated flat metal tube of the type including upper and lower flat horizontal walls, vertical edge walls and vertical partition walls spaced between the edge walls and interconnecting the upper and lower walls to divide the tube into a series of parallel, generally rectangular, longitudinally extending passages. The tube is cut by forming transverse kerfs in the upper and lower walls of the tube and thereafter exerting a relative pulling force on the tube sections on opposite sides of the plane in which the kerfs have been formed to tear apart the remaining tube material at the severing plane and sever the tube. The kerfs are formed in a two-step broaching operation comprising a first cut in which a narrow generally V-shaped narrow angle kerf is formed and a second cut in which the kerf is widened to provide a wide, generally V-shaped, wide angle kerf.

  • Patent number: 5238177
Abstract: Disclosed is a flexible hinge pin, and a method and apparatus for forming the hinge pin, wherein a cable is twisted and heated with sufficient torque and heat to sever the cable into shorter hinge pins. The heating and twisting causes the portions of the cable in proximity with the severed ends to have a tight spiral and to be reduced in diameter, and the strands which comprise the cable to be bonded to one another both internally and at external portions of the cable. The reduced diameters of the formed ends facilitates easier threading of the hinge pins through belt fastener hoops. The bonding of the cable strands in the region of the ends serves to both maintain the tight spiral and the reduced diameter, and to prevent the ends of the hinge pin from separating.

  • Patent number: 5219107
Abstract: A method for producing a glass knife, in which a flat glass plate (511) is divided by breaking along a divising line (23) scratched on said plate. The plate is placed on two lower supporting pins (9, 10), positioned by the use of means (7, 8) cooperating with the side edge surfaces of the glass plate, and is fixed by means of two upper supporting pins (17, 18) which are made to engage the upper face of said plate. Each pair of supporting pins has a line of symmetry perpendicular to the line of symmetry of the other pair, one line of symmetry coinciding with the dividing plane. Before the glass plate is broken by moving the supporting pins towards one another, the positioning means (7,8) are, at least partially, disengaged from the glass plate, such that essentially only the forces deriving from the supporting pins act upon the glass plate during the breaking thereof.
