  • Patent number: 4155789
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus and method for producing an elastomeric extrudate having a constant cross section area. The extrudate is shaped in to a ribbon through a roller die and applied to a tire surface mounted on a rotating spindle. Digital electronic circuitry is employed to provide precise shaft synchronization at a pre-selected rotational velocity ratio between the rotating shafts. The synchronization assures repeatable velocity synchronization between the source of elastomeric material and a take-up device at the axis of rotation of the two components. The elastomeric material is extruded in a manner permitting control over the wrap operation and the amount of elastomeric material employed for a given cycle.

  • Patent number: 4108344
Abstract: A continuously running, band-formed or mat-formed material, such as mineral wool, is weighed continuously at a given point, and the sensed weight is used to control the speed of a conveyor arrangement along which the band of material is running. The material is supported and transported along a first driven conveyor and onto a second driven conveyor spaced a short distance from the discharge end of the first conveyor. The first and second conveyors are oriented to form an upwardly concave obtuse angle such that the band of material deforms and bends through an upwardly concave obtuse angle as it passes from the first conveyor to the second conveyor. The band of material is continuously weighed as it passes between the first and second conveyors by passing the deformed and bent band onto and along a third non-driven idler conveyor located between the first and second conveyors and arranged to continuously sense the weight of the band passing therealong.

  • Patent number: 4096487
Abstract: Overlapping, and consequent illegibility, of recorded line scan or transverse records are precluded by delaying or inhibiting the recording process until the record sheet is being driven at or near full speed with respect to a normally blanked cathode ray tube record marking means. A voltage is established by a record speed select switch which must be substantially equaled by a voltage produced by a record sheet speed transducer before a comparator will turn on. The comparator output signal then allows the cathode ray tube to be unblanked and recording to start.

  • Patent number: 4057185
Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a pair of vertically disposed pinch rolls to facilitate the withdrawal of a strip of material from a rotatable mandrel is disclosed. The lower roll is operated conventionally at a preselected rotational velocity tending to advance the bottom surface of the strip through the rolls at a corresponding speed. The top roll is operated hydrostatically in response to strip speed and torque output feedback signals so as to maintain a constant output torque at a rotational velocity tending to advance the top surface of the strip at the monitored value of strip speed. As a result, the strip is advanced through the pinch rolls at a speed corresponding to the preselected rotational velocity of the bottom roll.

  • Patent number: 4026450
Abstract: An apparatus for conveying elongated flexible material such as metal strips, wire and tubes by means of rotating shafts in a processing container holding a treatment-fluid for treatment of the material chemically, electrolytically, by pickling, deposition and similar processes, provides for the means of: coiling the material, imparting the coiled material the shape of a helix having a plurality of loops; causing at least a partial immersion of the loops of the helix in the treatment-fluid; advancing the helix in the said container at an advance speed; controlling the entry speeds of the helix relative to a predetermined speed withdrawal of the helix from the container. In a preferred and more efficient mode of treatment, the inlet speed of the helix exceeds the exit speed with a consequent slow and progressive increase of the length of the helix immersed in the treatment-fluid at a time in a first phase of the operation.

  • Patent number: 4011976
Abstract: A method and apparatus to reduce ripple in the signal produced by a transducer attached to a dancer roll, or web accumulator, where cyclic web motion is present. Two transducers are used, one to produce a dancer roll position signal, and another, responsive to the cyclic web drive, to produce a signal corresponding to the ripple component of the dancer roll position signal. An adder combines both signals to generate a third, ripple free signal indicative of the average dancer roll position in the web accumulator. This ripple free signal may be used to control the web speed.

  • Patent number: 3998368
Abstract: Apparatus for leading long lengths of woven or nonwoven textile material over a series of rolls in a sinous path in which the rolls are arranged in upper and lower tiers and some of the upper rolls are driven from electric motors. The lower tier of rolls is supported by parallel beams which are pivoted at one end. At their other ends the beams are connected by a chain and sprocket connection to a motor-speed-control device which automatically adjusts the speed of certain rolls to maintain constant tension on the material along its path through the apparatus, when the material causes the bottom rolls to move up or down.

  • Patent number: 3974949
Abstract: A prefeeder drive for a sheet of material positioned on the input side of a standard incremental type sheet feeder for a forming press and which has drive rolls that move a sheet of material through a lubrication bath and toward the press. The sheet is driven to form an upright or overhead loop prior to entry of the sheet into the main, incremental feeder. The drive comprises a pair of rolls which are driven in response to a feedback control system sensing the size of the overhead loop so that the loop size is maintained within a desired range to insure satisfactory feeding of the sheet material into the main feeder and thence into the press. The overhead or free standing loop substantially reduces the inertia of the material that the main feeder has to overcome when feeding an increment of sheet stock into the press, and thus makes the feeding of the material more reliable with less likelihood of misfeeds.

  • Patent number: 3966106
Abstract: A follower roll or so-called spring roll system for use with a paper machine has a roll about which the paper web passes on its path through the machine, the web having a wrap angle about the roll of about 90.degree., to exert a horizontal force component against the roll, due to web tension. The roll bearings are each supported on a low friction slide, to permit substantially friction free displacement of the roll horizontally. The position of each roll bearing housing is controlled by an air bag acting as a variable rate spring to oppose displacement of the roll under web tension, with a second air bag opposed thereto, acting as a constant rate displacer, to assist the displacing effects of web tension. The two bearing housings are synchronized in their displacement under web tension variations by a synchronizing shaft extending across the width of the machine and connected with each of the two bearing housings by a rack and pinion arrangement.
