Patent number: 7328827Abstract: A spring energized stapler includes a “high start” design wherein a striker has a rest position above the staple track. A handle is pressed to energize a power spring while the striker remains stationary. At a predetermined position of the handle, the striker is released to eject a staple. A subassembly of a cage and the power spring provides a preload to the power spring in the rest position. The subassembly is separately movable from the handle to allow a handle pressing end to move farther than the striker's distance of travel. The handle includes a movable pivot location to enable enhanced motion of the handle pressing end. Alternatively, an optional lever links the striker to the power spring to provide leverage upon the power spring. A release latch may be mounted in front of the striker to be engaged by the lever or the handle.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2007Date of Patent: February 12, 2008Assignee: WorkTools, Inc.Inventor: Joel S. Patent number: 7195141Abstract: A stapler has a base section and a stapling unit. The stapling unit is pivotally attached to the base section, and the base section is pivotally attached to a baseplate. In an initial position, the base section is fixed relative to the baseplate through a releasable locking mechanism connected to the baseplate and a base section. The base section has pivoting bending arms in an area underneath a support surface for a workpiece to be stapled. When a driver has driven a staple into the workpiece to a position in which the crown of the staple is in contact with the workpiece, the locking mechanism is released, and the base section pivots and is tilted against the baseplate, causing the bending arms to pivot so that the legs of the staple are bent into a position against the workpiece. A cutting pad disposed in an area between the bending arms interacts with the bending arms to cut off excess length of the staple legs.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2006Date of Patent: March 27, 2007Assignee: Isaberg Rapid ABInventors: Martin Elonsson, Peter Johansson

Patent number: 7118019Abstract: An anti-jamming design for a stapler track provides reduced force to shear a staple from a rack of staples. In stapling, a front staple must be separated from a rack of staples to eject the staple out. Conventional staplers shear the glue that holds the staples together all at once, so the peak force to separate the staple is high. In the present invention the glue that holds staples together in a rack is sheared by a peeling action. Locally progressing sections of glue are peeled as the front staple is sheared from the adjacent second staple. According to one embodiment of the invention progressive shearing is provided by an asymmetric track front end, whereby the front staples are fully supported on one side only so that the staple rack twists as the striker slowly presses down. The striker contacts the supported, higher, side of the staple first and the staple begins to shear from this higher side.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2003Date of Patent: October 10, 2006Assignee: WorkTools, Inc.Inventor: Joel Marks

Patent number: 7014088Abstract: The present invention provides for the safe and effective installation of staples. The device has a hollow body at its upper end, a cap plate with an opening attached to the upper end of the body, and a driver shaft mounted to slide within the cap plate. A block is secured within the body at the lower end of the body remote from the cap plate. The block has two channels and a striker slides through the channels. An indentation is located in the lower end of the block to hold the arch of a staple. A driver plate slides within the body and is secured to the driver shaft on one side and to both strikers on the opposite side. A driver spring and a pair of striker springs surround the driver shaft and strikers, respectively. The channels guide the strikers while the indentation positions the staple. This causes the strikers to strike the brads of the staple simultaneously, without damaging either the staple or the brads and, most importantly, the wiring or cabling the staple secures.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2004Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Inventor: Christopher T. Preferably, the lever arm defines an effective lever axis that is at least about 65° offset from the ram axis when in the static position. When stapling, the effective lever axis is preferably greater than about 95° when the lever arm is compressed to the fully stapled position.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 20, 2002Publication date: August 21, 2003Applicant: Acco Brands, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Jairam, Bikram Sohi

Patent number: 6607111Abstract: Disclosed and taught is a novel drive mechanism for a cyclic operating tool employing an energized flywheel to provide the necessary energy to perform a working cycle. The drive mechanism disclosed is particularly useful in hand tool applications such as a hand held nailing machine. The flywheel may be energized by a corded or battery powered motor. The herein disclosed mechanism teaches a novel pair of ball ramp cam plates wherein a first pair of ball ramps cause an initial engagement of a clutch with the energized flywheel whereupon rotation of the clutch causes activation of a second pair of ball ramps which affect compression of a spring which acts to increase the pressure applied to the clutch thereby assuring a slip free engagement between the clutch and he flywheel throughout the working cycle of the drive mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2001Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: Senco Products, Inc.Inventors: Conrad A. Patent number: 6604666Abstract: A portable electric nailing gun operating from a power supply. The motor accelerates a flywheel which at the appropriate energy state is coupled through a mechanism to an anvil acting directly on the nail. The actuation is governed by a control circuit and initiated from a trigger switch. The motor accelerates a flywheel that is then clutched to the output anvil causing the nail to be driven. The position of the output anvil is sensed and once the nail is driven, the motor is dynamically braked reducing the excess energy in the flywheel. This method uses a highly responsive motor and power supply which enables the motor to come up to speed, drive the nail and return to a low energy condition in less than 2 seconds. The electrical control circuit and brake allow precise control and improve safety. The power supply is preferably a rechargeable low impedance battery.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2002Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Tricord Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Christopher S. Patent number: 6601747Abstract: An office tool assembly has a tool and a hanging cap. The tool is inserted into and is held in the hanging cap. A protrusion is formed on the tool to engage with a through hole defined in the cap to keep the tool from falling out of the hanging cap. A transverse hole is defined in the hanging cap through which a string passes, such that the tool assembly can be hung around a person's neck. Accordingly, a user can conveniently and safely carry the tool assembly to any desired place for use.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2003Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Inventor: Su-Chao Chi Kuo

Publication number: 20030115738Abstract: Insulated or coated staple and a fastening tool for driving the same into a substrate. The tool includes a housing and a driver reciprocally mounted in the housing and moveable with respect to the housing, the driver having a driving surface for engaging a fastener such as a coated staple. A magazine assembly is associated with the housing for positioning and aligning the coated fastener in the path of the driver so that when actuated, the driver strikes the fastener and forcibly ejects it from the magazine into the substrate on which the object to be fastened is to be secured. Suitable fasteners include coated staples (of various sizes and configurations), nails, brads, rivets, etc.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 7, 2001Publication date: June 26, 2003Inventors: Van Barlow, Onno Boswinkel, Robert Haynes, Richard Gold
