Publication number: 20080149688Abstract: A system and method of forming a continuous strip from a plurality of strips, each strip having a leading end and a trailing end. Embodiments can include a forming apparatus that chamfers at least one of the leading and trailing ends of each strip. The chamfered trailing ends may then be positioned against chamfered leading ends of successive ones of the plurality of strips. Once a leading end and a trailing end are positioned against one another, a first welding apparatus may weld on a first side, from above, the trailing and leading ends positioned against each other to form weld joints. Once at least two strips have been welded together, the strips can constitute the continuous strip. An inverting apparatus can then invert the continuous strip and weld joints. The inversion of the weld joints can be done so as not to create a reverse bend in the continuous strip. A second welding apparatus can then weld on a second side opposite the first side, from above, the inverted weld joints to form weld junctions.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2007Publication date: June 26, 2008Inventors: B.K. Patent number: 6955287Abstract: An upper shearing blade equipped with a protrusion of a triangle-columnar shape and a lower shearing blade equipped with a protrusion of the same shape are applied onto the overlapped portion of metal plates to be bonded, and then pressed into the metal plates in an oblique direction inclined with respect to the thickness direction by a stroke in such a range that the metal plates are not completely cut off. The operating loci of the upper, shearing blade and the lower shearing blade are overlapped each other so that one falls inside the other, and the sheared surfaces of the metal plates are formed into a bonded portion by plastic flow deformation. Therein, since a compressive force is applied onto the portions to be bonded, the portion being defined by the amount of overlap, and the portions are compressed to form a compressed portion after completion of bonding, the bonding strength enhances.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2000Date of Patent: October 18, 2005Assignees: Hitachi, Ltd., Pohang Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., Research Institution of Industrial Science and TechnologyInventors: Kenji Horii, Yasutsugu Yoshimura, Tadashi Nishino, Takashi Kamoshita, Takayoshi Tomino, Fuminori Ishikawa, Takao Funamoto, Takashi Mashiko, Kenjiro Narita, Jong-Keun Kim, Ki-Chol Kim, Jong-Sub Lee, Hwang-Kyu Hwang, Jung-Sik Lee, Jin-Hee Kim

Publication number: 20020063145Abstract: Selectively reinforced blanks are used in a hydroforming process to produce completed components having a predetermined shape and sufficient structural integrity to perform their desired function. To reinforce those components, reinforcing patches are added to the blank prior to hydroforming. Planar patches can be bonded to planar blanks or arcuate patches can be bonded to tubular blanks. In so doing, the hydroforming process produces a complete component, which does not require additional manufacturing steps to reinforce it. Additionally, by selectively using the reinforcing patches, the overall weight of the component is not unduly increased.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 29, 2000Publication date: May 30, 2002Inventors: Steven R. Patent number: 6152351Abstract: A process for manufacturing a wheel for a motor vehicle, in which a wheel spider and a rim ring are connected with one another by means of friction welding. At least one of these wheel parts consists of a magnesium alloy. The controlling of the speed of the start of the friction, of the friction and of the compression of the friction welding process, particularly of the deformation capacity, takes place as a function of physical characteristics of the magnesium alloy.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1998Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Assignees: Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Patent number: 6006789Abstract: A steel mother pipe obtained by a solid phase butt-welding pipe-making process or a welding pipe-making process is reduced by heating the pipe prior to the reduction at a temperature exceeding 100.degree. C. and lower than 800.degree. C. wherein the temperature of the steel pipe being reduced is controlled within a defined range. The temperature difference along the circumferential direction of the mother pipe at the inlet side of a reducer is within a defined range, and the temperature of the steel pipe at interstand positions of the reducer is also controlled. By virtue of this control, the reduction becomes possible at low load while suppressing work hardening without degrading surface properties. The resultant product pipe has a dimensional accuracy maintained at a high level.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1997Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: Kawasaki Steel CorporationInventors: Takaaki Toyooka, Akira Yorifuji, Motoaki Itadani, Toshio Ohnishi, Yuji Hashimoto, Nobuki Tanaka, Hiroyuki Matsui

Patent number: 5862592Abstract: A cage for a roller bearing which is free of fretting and abnormal noise, which can be manufactured at low cost, and which can be easily mounted in the bearing. The cage is formed by bending a metal sheet having pockets into a ring shape, temporarily joining its ends, heat-treating the ring thus formed to remove stress, and separating the temporarily joined portion. Such a cage tends to rotate slower than the raceway members on the driving side of the bearing, making it possible to reduce fretting. Such a cage can be used under high-temperature conditions.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1997Date of Patent: January 26, 1999Assignee: NTN CorporationInventors: Kazuyoshi Harimoto, Tsutomu Hashimoto, Eiji Ohsugi, Keiji Suzuki, Kiyoshi Kaneko, Atsushi Yamashita

Patent number: 5335841Abstract: Disclosed are a welded pipe with an excellent corrosion resistance, having two plate layers on the inner surface thereof, and a method of manufacturing it. The inner surface is coated with the plate layers even on the bead part and other steel foundation-exposed parts. A first plate layer of at least one of Ni, Co and Ni- or Co-base alloys is formed on at least one surface of a steel strip, then a second plate layer made of a metal or alloy having a lower melting point than the metal or alloy of forming the first plate layer is formed over the first plate layer. The thus plated steel strip is formed into a pipe and then heat-treated to give a welded pipe having no exposed steel foundation. The welded pipe has excellent corrosion resistance and workability.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1993Date of Patent: August 9, 1994Assignee: USUI Kokusai Sangyo Kaisha Ltd.Inventor: Hiroshi Yamanashi

Patent number: 5148966Abstract: A method is disclosed for producing an electric deposition foil producing drum for producing an electrically deposited metallic foil having a high quality. An opening tip end portion (14) opened toward the inside is formed in an inner surface portion of a joint portion (13) of an outer skin (12) made from a planar material in the form of a cylinder. The opening end portion (14) is welded from inside, and subsequently, the welded portion (15) and a portion close to the welded portion are bulged outwardly. A layer is welded in a recess (17) formed by the bulging work while cooling the outer surface of the outer skin. Subsequently, the welded layer is peened under a hot or cold work. Subsequently, the peened portion (18) is annealed. It is possible to obtain further advantages by using a welding means which does not require a welding rod for the welding of the joint portion (13).Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1991Date of Patent: September 22, 1992Assignee: Nippon Stainless Steel Kozai Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akira Minase, Kinzo Murayama
