Patent number: 5358168Abstract: The present invention is a brazed fitting suitable for use as a hydraulic coupling for pressurized fluids. A male component has a tapered surface which mates and creates an interface with a similarly tapered surface of a female component. A brazing material is heated to diffuse and alloy within the interface, forming a connection between the surface portions which is stronger than the metal being connected. A groove on the male component retains the brazing material in the middle of the surface portions so that after the components are joined in an interference fit, the assembly is heated and the brazing material melts in the middle of the interface and connects together the mating surfaces by diffusing and alloying. The counterbore of the female component does not require a base, and the resulting structure has improved fluid flow characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1994Date of Patent: October 25, 1994Assignee: NWD International, Inc.Inventor: Nigel D. At substantially spaced intervals narrow shallow vent grooves are formed across one of the surfaces, while leaving between the vent grooves separating lengths of many times the length of the groove width. The grooves enable the NVFE welding to be effected continuously in unidirectional pass along the joint, the gases venting from the joint through the successive vent grooves as the welding progresses continuously along the joint. Continuously after the venting of the gases at each of the successive vent grooves, each vent groove is sealed by the NVFE welding without interrupting the welding progression.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1981Date of Patent: June 7, 1983Assignees: Houdaille Industries, Inc., Leybold-Heraeus Vacuum Systems, Inc.Inventors: George E. Patent number: 4255641Abstract: The specification discloses a method and apparatus for assuring the integrity of outside weldings of pipelines. Pipe sections are prepared for welding by forming a beveled profile with a relatively narrow annular contact band on the ends of each pipe section. When the pipe sections are abutted end to end for welding, the leveled profiles form a relatively deep groove on the outside of the pipe between the pipe sections, with the annular contact bands abutting and spaced inwardly from the grooves. The contact band on at least one of the pipe sections is circumferentially prepared such as by knurling to provide controlled spacing between the contact bands of the pipe sections. A welding arc is applied to the bottom of the groove from the exterior of the pipe sections to weld the annular contact bands together. Welding penetration is enhanced by the circumferential preparation of the contact bands.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1978Date of Patent: March 10, 1981Assignee: Crutcher Resources CorporationInventors: Talbert D. Patent number: 4179059Abstract: A TIG pipe welding method which employs two sets of machine guide surfaces on the pipe ends. First radially inner guide surfaces cooperate with a sensor coupled to the welding torch to continuously monitor the arc gap between the welding electrode and the weld puddle as the welding electrode moves around the circumference of the pipe. The second set of radially outer surfaces cooperate with a welding carriage to guide the carriage and welding modules around the pipe joint. The carriage is constructed to provide a sealed welding chamber surrounding the electrode. An additional flow of shielding gas is provided around the torch electrode of a TIG or hot wire TIG welding module to augment the normal gas shield.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1977Date of Patent: December 18, 1979Assignee: Santa Fe International CorporationInventors: Nuke M. Patent number: 4132343Abstract: A pipeline consisting of lengths of steel pipe welded together in end-to-end relation is made by first weld-plating the internal surface of the end portions of each individual pipe length with a corrosion-resistant material. A protective layer is then applied to the internal surface of each pipe length between the weld-plated end portions, the latter having first been smoothed down by machining to the desired finished thickness of the protective layer. The pipe lengths are then welded together in end-to-end relation. The welding operation consists of first depositing a root bead encircling the pipe at the junction of the ends of the weld-plated material. Weld material is then deposited in and fills out the gap between bevelled edges of the pipe ends to substantially the outside diameter of the pipe.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1977Date of Patent: January 2, 1979Assignee: BBC Brown, Boveri & Company LimitedInventor: Anders Kullendorff
