Each of the grooves has one end extending to the outside of the bore of the second metal piece when the joint portion is inserted in the bore. The gas or residue of flux produced during brazing escapes through the grooves, whereby voids or like defects are prevented from occurring in the fillet of the brazed joint. • Patent number: 5358168
Abstract: The present invention is a brazed fitting suitable for use as a hydraulic coupling for pressurized fluids. A male component has a tapered surface which mates and creates an interface with a similarly tapered surface of a female component. A brazing material is heated to diffuse and alloy within the interface, forming a connection between the surface portions which is stronger than the metal being connected. A groove on the male component retains the brazing material in the middle of the surface portions so that after the components are joined in an interference fit, the assembly is heated and the brazing material melts in the middle of the interface and connects together the mating surfaces by diffusing and alloying. The counterbore of the female component does not require a base, and the resulting structure has improved fluid flow characteristics.

The flange ring consists of a metal which is resistant to body electrolytes, and the coefficients of thermal expansion of the joined materials are matched to each other, but are not identical. For avoiding cracks in the ceramic disk in the region of the solder connection, the solder gap has a width such that the diffusion path of the metal of the flange ring into the solder connection cannot exceed a selected distance in the solder bridge which forms at the soldering temperature. A solder zone which is free of the metal of the flange ring, and thus has a dutility which is not degraded by the flange ring metal, is formed around the ceramic disk.

  • Patent number: 4402449
Abstract: A method of making a workpiece holding device having an expandable mandrel including the step of melting copper ring seals around the bore next to the ends of the expandable mandrel to maintain the mandrel rigidly in place. The holding device includes an expandable sleeve of generally cylindrical shape having a thin outer shell with a pair of opposed thick wall circular ends integral with the shell extending radially inward to form a bore. An elongated generally circular central body with a central bore for containing pressure and adapted to be mounted on a machine tool having an outside diameter engageable with the bore. A pair of opposed arcuate undercut grooves are formed at an intersection of the outer shell and the circular ends to prevent the formation of destructive stress concentration at the intersection. Chamfers are formed at the outer edges of the bore and copper rings are inserted therein and melted to form a seal between the bore and mount the expandable sleeve to the central body.

  • Patent number: 4394953
Abstract: In the manufacture of rotating anodes for X-ray tubes consisting of a basic body made of high-melting metal or its alloys and one or a plurality of graphite parts, the graphite parts (3) are provided with grooves (5) and boreholes (6) before the individual parts are joined by soldering. The grooves (5) mainly having a semicircular cross section are provided in the surface (4) of the graphite parts (3) to be joined by soldering. The boreholes (6) extend through the graphite parts (3) and feed into the grooves (5) approximately vertical to the graphite surface (4). Excessive solder and gases formed during soldering may flow or escape by way of the grooves and boreholes, which produces an improved soldered joint with increased adhesive or bonding strength between the basic body and the graphite parts.

  • Patent number: 4386728
Abstract: A method of hermetically sealing by NVFE (non-vacuum focused energy) welding abutment joints formed by elongate surfaces. At substantially spaced intervals narrow shallow vent grooves are formed across one of the surfaces, while leaving between the vent grooves separating lengths of many times the length of the groove width. The grooves enable the NVFE welding to be effected continuously in unidirectional pass along the joint, the gases venting from the joint through the successive vent grooves as the welding progresses continuously along the joint. Continuously after the venting of the gases at each of the successive vent grooves, each vent groove is sealed by the NVFE welding without interrupting the welding progression.

Abstract: An improved basket assembly and method of making same of the type designed for use in a sugar centrifuge that includes an annular mounting flange containing an upwardly-flared frustoconical seat and an open-bottomed conical element adapted to mate in assembled relation with the aforementioned frustoconical flange seat. The apparatus is characterized by shaping the opposed surfaces at the lower end of the cone and base of the seat so as to cooperate with one another in assembled relation to define an upwardly-opening and inwardly-flared continuous annular groove for the reception of a weld. The apparatus also includes a circumferentially-spaced series of apertures in the wall of the cone opening onto the conical surface of the seat when assembled to receive a corresponding number of plug welds.

  • Patent number: 4255641
Abstract: The specification discloses a method and apparatus for assuring the integrity of outside weldings of pipelines. Pipe sections are prepared for welding by forming a beveled profile with a relatively narrow annular contact band on the ends of each pipe section. When the pipe sections are abutted end to end for welding, the leveled profiles form a relatively deep groove on the outside of the pipe between the pipe sections, with the annular contact bands abutting and spaced inwardly from the grooves. The contact band on at least one of the pipe sections is circumferentially prepared such as by knurling to provide controlled spacing between the contact bands of the pipe sections. A welding arc is applied to the bottom of the groove from the exterior of the pipe sections to weld the annular contact bands together. Welding penetration is enhanced by the circumferential preparation of the contact bands.

Abstract: A groove is provided on the side of a metallic structure opposite to the side thereof which is exposed to a corrosive atmosphere, and the groove is subjected to build-up welding while cooling with a liquid coolant, whereby any stress corrosion cracking which otherwise occurs on the side of the structure to be exposed to the corrosive atmosphere can be prevented. Especially, this method of manufacture is appropriate for the repair welding of a butt-welded pipe of austenite type stainless steel, and it is effective to perfectly prevent the stress corrosion cracking of the pipe prone to be caused by reactor water during use in a nuclear reactor.

  • Patent number: 4179059
Abstract: A TIG pipe welding method which employs two sets of machine guide surfaces on the pipe ends. First radially inner guide surfaces cooperate with a sensor coupled to the welding torch to continuously monitor the arc gap between the welding electrode and the weld puddle as the welding electrode moves around the circumference of the pipe. The second set of radially outer surfaces cooperate with a welding carriage to guide the carriage and welding modules around the pipe joint. The carriage is constructed to provide a sealed welding chamber surrounding the electrode. An additional flow of shielding gas is provided around the torch electrode of a TIG or hot wire TIG welding module to augment the normal gas shield.

  • Patent number: 4132343
Abstract: A pipeline consisting of lengths of steel pipe welded together in end-to-end relation is made by first weld-plating the internal surface of the end portions of each individual pipe length with a corrosion-resistant material. A protective layer is then applied to the internal surface of each pipe length between the weld-plated end portions, the latter having first been smoothed down by machining to the desired finished thickness of the protective layer. The pipe lengths are then welded together in end-to-end relation. The welding operation consists of first depositing a root bead encircling the pipe at the junction of the ends of the weld-plated material. Weld material is then deposited in and fills out the gap between bevelled edges of the pipe ends to substantially the outside diameter of the pipe.

The joint comprises a pair of abutted male frustroconical skirts, each attached integrally to the pipe segments to be joined and confronting each other at opposed mating and finished surfaces which define a sunken ridge at their periphery. A uniform continuous seal weld of relatively slight penetration seals the opposed mating and finished surfaces at the ridge. The pipe joint is physically secured by a plurality of, for example, three female frustroconical segments forming a circumscribing collet which is circumferentially clamped to the skirt by a plurality of, for example, three tangentially disposed bolts. The abutted frustroconical skirts taper from a broad cross section adjacent the pipe wall radially outwardly to a narrower cross section.
