Patent number: 6968999Abstract: An apparatus and method for creating and recording both an electronic and printed ballot for each voter during voting. The system can employ a variety of vote selection techniques which can lead to the generation of an electronic tally of the vote in addition to the printing of a paper ballot. The printed ballot includes only the names of the candidates for whom the voter has voted in a form that is easily readable by both humans and machine. This unambiguous printed ballot makes it easy for voters to verify the accuracy of their intended vote and can subsequently be used to casting the voters official vote or saved to provide an audit trail for subsequent confirmation of the electronic tally. These and other features accelerate the initial tabulation of results while providing multiple safeguards against fraud through the printing of a paper record for verifying voter intent.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2001Date of Patent: November 29, 2005Inventor: David C. Patent number: 6854644Abstract: Described is a method of determining a choice made by a user by analyzing marks made on a response sheet by the user. The method employs a response sheet having response areas in which a user is directed to make marks indicating choices. The marked response sheet is then scanned to produce a digital image and associated data of each response area. That data is analyzed for characteristics according to a set of predetermined principles. These principles are based on the form of the response areas on the response sheet. The presence of certain characteristics in the data determines whether a mark was made in the response area and whether the mark constitutes a choice by the user.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2002Date of Patent: February 15, 2005Assignee: Election Systems & Software, Inc.Inventors: Steve Bolton, Tim Cordes, Herb Deutsch

Publication number: 20030094489Abstract: A system and a method for voting with a unique one-time token by an audience member, which is fully automated. The token is preferably usable only within a predetermined lifespan, such that the time period for collecting the data is predefined. If the audience is to be allowed to submit more than one preference, or to have more than one “vote”, preferably a plurality of tokens are provided to the audience member. According to one embodiment, such a plurality of tokens are all preferably of equal weight, or generic. Publication number: 20030047605Abstract: An electronic voting system with a headquarters unit, a plurality of precinct units, a plurality of voting stations associated with each precinct unit, and a plurality of mobile memory units (MMUs) to contain data that can be transported back and forth between the headquarters unit and the precinct units. The MMUs include FLASH memory, wherein each memory location can be written to once and read many times. Each memory location can thus only be subsequently written to after all the data in the entire FLASH memory has been erased. The system includes the ability to store images of the cast ballots at multiple locations for verification and authentication. The system includes the ability to store a direct representation of the voter's selections as displayed to the voter as a redundant image of the ballot.
