  • Patent number: 8196830
Abstract: A hand-operated document processor includes a base for receiving a document containing magnetic ink character data to be read and recognized. A manually operated moving magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) subsystem includes a MICR read head and is attached to the base such that movement of the subsystem causes the MICR read head to pass over the magnetic ink character data on the document. MICR reading and recognition logic receives the signal from the MICR read head. A speed limiting device includes a viscous damper, and is connected to the MICR subsystem. The viscous damper provides a resistance load when the MICR subsystem is moved across the document being processed. The resistance load increases as the operator increases the speed of the MICR subsystem to encourage the operator to maintain a constant scanning rate over the length of the document.

  • Patent number: 8173008
Abstract: A method for determining an analyte in a bodily fluid sample includes inserting the analyte test strip into a test meter. The insertion is such that an electrical connector pin of the test meter travels along an electrical contact pad of the analyte test strip, and across a meter identification feature disposed on the electrical contact pad, during the insertion. Moreover, during the insertion, a signal processing module of the test meter measures an electrical characteristic via the electrical connector pin as the electrical connector pin travels along the electrical contact pad and across the meter identification feature. The method also includes identifying the analyte test strip, using the signal processing module, based on the electrical characteristic measured as the analyte test strip is inserted into the test meter and, thereafter, applying the bodily fluid sample to the analyte test strip upon notification by the test meter that the identification indicates that such applying is appropriate.

Abstract: A hand-operated document processor includes a base including a perforated bed for receiving a document containing magnetic ink character data to be read and recognized. The base defines a chamber under the perforated bed. A document positioning and retentioning device connected to the base includes a manually-powered anti-skew device for creating a vacuum. The created vacuum is provided to the chamber under the perforated bed such that the vacuum, acting through the perforations, securely holds the document during the scanning operation.

  • Patent number: 7530492
Abstract: The invention discloses a card discriminating system used for identifying whether a card is authentic or not. The card has a surface, and N sensing marks are formed on the surface of the card. The card discriminating system includes a position-based pulse generation module, at least one sensor, and a micro-controller unit. The micro-controller unit is respectively coupled with the position-based pulse generating module and each of the sensors. When the card actuates and passes through the position-based pulse generating module, the position-based pulse generating module will generate a reference position-based pulse. When one of the N sensing marks of the card passes through one of the sensors, the sensor will generate a corresponding sensing position-based pulse. The micro-controller unit is used for comparing the sensing position-based pulse with the reference position-based pulse, so as to identify whether the card is authentic or not.

Abstract: A dot code contains a plurality of data dots arranged according to the data to be recorded and markers providing data dot read reference points for reading the data dots and showing a predetermined relationship relative to the data dots in terms of a predetermined physical characteristic quantity, the data dots and the markers being arranged to show a predetermined positional relationship according a predetermined format. The parameter setting section determines parameters necessary for the marker detecting section to detect markers from the dot code image stored in the image data storage section. The parameters are determined on the basis of the relationship between the markers and the data dots in terms of the predetermined physical characteristic quantity in such a way that markers are detected firstly without detecting data dots.

  • Patent number: 5757641
Abstract: A triplex control system provides automatic compensation for a sensor bias failure in one channel while continuing to process all sensor readout signals. The triplex control system includes first through third non-linear feedback channel processors, each being coupled to a respective sensor to receive a readout signal therefrom. Each channel processor comprises a control algorithm module and feedback loop correction circuit coupled together so as to generate a channel output signal in correspondence with a channel control algorithm and a feedback loop correction signal. The respective channel feedback loop correction signal is generated by the feedback loop correction circuit to provide sensor failure compensation; the feedback signal has a bias sense and magnitude that serves to correct the channel output signal so as to drive it towards the average of the channel control signals from each of the channel processors.

  • Patent number: 5491327
Abstract: An encoder of magnetic credit cards and the like includes a slot for the movement of a medium therealong where the slot is wider than the thickness of the medium. Cosequently, the medium may tilt with respect to the planes of the side walls defining the slot. Such an encoder includes a timing wheel which ensures proper encoding of data on the medium even if the medium tilts with respect to the planes of the side walls. To this end, an encoder herein includes a suspension for the timing wheel which permits the wheel to tilt to conform to any tilt assumed by a medium advancing in the slot. A leaf spring of unique design permits the requisite tilt to be realized and has been found to have surprising strength so as to permit the suspension of not only the timing wheel but also a printed circuit board to which the timing wheel may be mounted.

  • Patent number: 5404000
Abstract: A data card terminal, such as a credit card transaction terminal, is disclosed. The terminal includes a transaction terminal comprising an embossed character reader and magnetic stripe reader, with a separate signature capture printer. The transaction terminal is operative for detecting the physical presence of a data card during a card transaction. The embossed character reader employs a tactile imager and pattern recognition for detecting the embossed characters on the data card. A signature capturing printer prints a paper receipt, which is signed by a cardholder at a signature capturing window on the printer. A signature capturing system digitizes and compresses signals corresponding to the signature of the card holder. Transaction data including compressed signature signals and signals indicative of the presence of the card are transmitted to the host computer system of a transaction processor, who guarantees the transaction as chargeback-protected under certain circumstances.

  • Patent number: 4937438
Abstract: A magnetic stripe encoding apparatus (24) encodes information onto a magnetic stripe (22) of a card (20). A card carriage (26) moves the card (20) along a card transport path between a top rail (28) and a bottom rail (30). The magnetic stripe (22) passes an encoding write head (36) and a read head (40) for writing and verifying information on the stripe (22). Heads (36, 40) mount on a bracket (44) which allows only twisting motion and movement toward and away from the card (20) so that good contact is maintained between the magnetic stripe (22) and the heads (36, 40). One embodiment of the card carriage (26) includes spring biased pawls (60, 62) which are biased into the card transport path for engaging the card (20) and rotate away from the card transport path so that the pawls 60,62 do not engage the card (20).
