If the master system determines that the span of the distance between the master system and the personal data device is too greater the master system sends a first message to the personal data device. The master system further monitors the temperature in the air around the child safety seat. If the measured temperature exceeds a previously determined maximum temperature, the master system sends a second message to an appropriate authority.

The meter can also include a power switch for controlling current flow to a battery fuel gauge. The power switch is open when the meter enters into a sleep mode. The state of battery charge is determined after the meter exits the sleep mode.
