Light Level Control Patents (Class 235/455)
  • Patent number: 7871005
Abstract: An information reader has a light source, an optical system having a light receiving sensor and a lens, and a board supporting the source and sensor such that a sensor axis of the sensor perpendicular to the sensor and passing an intersection of an optical axis of the optical system and the sensor is parallel to an emission axis of the source. A positional relation among the lens, sensor and source satisfies a distance Di between the lens and sensor, a distance Da between an optical axis of the lens and the axis of the source, and a distance Do between the lens and a readable area. The axis of the sensor is shifted from the optical axis of the lens by an offset value F=Da×Di/Do in a direction away from the source. The reader optically reads a code placed in the readable area.

Abstract: A code scanner, which illuminates a scanned code from a distance, includes a liquid lens which focuses the reflected image of the code on an image sensor. The scanner includes a range detector, preferably laser-based, which determines the distance to the scanned code, and the liquid lens is controlled to focus at the detected distance. A source of illumination is uncontrolled to maintain its intensity substantially constant, regardless of the distance of the scanned code. This can be achieved by controlling the intensity of illumination (directly), or the dispersal angle of illumination in relationship to the distance.

  • Patent number: 7823783
Abstract: A system and method is provided for illuminating a subject using a light pipe that transmits light from a source, such as an LED ring illuminator to an outlet that directs the light appropriately as either bright field illumination, dark field illumination or both. The light pipe can include concentric cylinders, typically with a bright field illuminator nested within a dark field illuminator. The tip of the dark field illuminator may be angled so as to internally reflect light inwardly toward the central optical axis of a camera at a low angle. The tip can be located near the focal plane of the camera for the desired field of view. The field of view of the camera sensor can be modified to reject data outside of a illumination field of a particular shape. This illumination field can be created by shaping the light pipe in a predetermined form that projects the modified illumination field.

Abstract: A method and system for calibrating optical reader systems employs a target with areas comprising linear gray scale levels. The gray scale levels include the darkest and the lightest scenes. The gray scale levels are illuminated by an array of LEDs and the light reflected from target impacts photo-transistors. The photo-transistors are biased in their linear ranges and the target is scanned while the LED drive current is changed. The photo-transistor responses to the different gray scale levels at the different LED drive currents are analyzed, and the LED rive current that produces a linear output from the photo-transistors over the gray scale dynamic range is selected. Several video channels may be used and their offsets and gains are normalized. Black offsets and black to white gain correction functions are generated for balancing or correcting each pixel. The correction functions may be applied by a processor for later raw image data of scenes scanned by the optical reader.

  • Patent number: 7227640
Abstract: A photoelectric sensor includes a light-emitting element and a light-receiving element and detects a mark on an object. Prior to the detection of the mark, a reference received light quantity level is sampled for the surface of an object not including the mark, for every color of light. A mark received light quantity level is then sampled for every color of light. The difference is obtained between the reference received light quantity level and the corresponding mark received light quantity level for each color of light. A ratio of the obtained difference to the reference received light quantity level is obtained. For the colors of light where the difference equals or exceeds a predetermined value, the color of light having the largest ratio is selected for emission from the light-emitting element in the detection of the mark.

  • Patent number: 7140543
Abstract: A device including at least one image detection array and image formation optics that provide a field of view corresponding to the image detection array. At least one illumination module (which includes at least one source of coherent illumination) produces planar light illumination that substantially overlaps the field of view corresponding to the image detection array. Illumination control circuitry modulates the power level of illumination produced by the source of coherent illumination during each photo-integration time period of the image detection array to thereby reduce speckle noise in images captured by the image detection array. The illumination control circuitry preferably modulates the power level of illumination by controlling the number and/or duration of time periods corresponding to different power levels of illumination produced by the source of coherent illumination during each photo-integration time period of the image detection array.

Abstract: A smart card may include integrated circuitry and I/O components composed of organic materials. Organic materials are advantageous because they remain intact under instances of physical stress. They permit the smart card to undergo flexion from time to time without damaging the processing components thereon. Further, use of organic materials leads to reduced costs during manufacture. For example, the organic materials may be provided directly upon substrates composed of ordinary plastic materials thereby reducing the costs of manufacture of these smart cards when compared with smart cards that are made of traditional silicon-based integrated circuits.
