Patent number: 7040540Abstract: A code symbol reading device includes a portable housing that contains a source of optical energy. This optical energy is projected into a scan field external to the housing and is incident upon a code symbol situated on an object located within the scan field. Optical energy reflected off the code symbol is detected within the housing to produce scan data that is indicative of the detected optical energy. The scan data is processed to detect and decode the code symbol and to produce symbol character data that are representative of the decoded code symbol. A data packet utilizing the symbol character data is constructed and then used to modulate an electromagnetic carrier sign that is transmitted to a base unit. At the base unit, the carrier signal is demodulated and the data packet is recovered. The received data packet is processed to recover the symbol character data, and an acknowledgment signal is generated to acknowledge the receipt of the symbol character data at the base unit.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2003Date of Patent: May 9, 2006Assignee: Metrologic Instruments, Inc.Inventors: Carl H. The sensing device also generates movement data indicative of the sensing device's movement relative to the interface surface. The indicating and movement data from the sensing device are received in a computer, and the interactive element identified. The computer software is then operated at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the interactive element.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2000Date of Patent: December 21, 2004Assignee: Silverbrook Research Pty LTDInventors: Kia Silverbrook, Paul Lapstun

Patent number: 6830180Abstract: A method for verification of the identity of a patient to which a medical treatment is to be delivered. The identity of the patient is verified and the treatment to be delivered is checked. In some embodiments, an identifying element such as patient chart or patient photograph is provided for the patient which includes a patient identifier, e.g., a barcode, capable of being read by a reader device located within the treatment room. In these embodiments, the patient identifier is read by the reader device in the treatment room and a characteristic audio signal, previously assigned to the patient and known to the patient, is generated in response to the reading of the identifying element when there is a match between the patient identifier and a stored identifier for the patient. Treatment of the patient is at least temporarily withheld if any audio signal generated in response to reading of the patient identifier by the reader device is not the characteristic audio signal assigned to the patient.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2003Date of Patent: December 14, 2004Inventor: Christopher S. Patent number: 6830189Abstract: Methods of and systems for illuminating objects using planar laser illumination beams having substantially-planar spatial distribution characteristics that extend through the field of view (FOV) of image formation and detection modules employed in such systems. Each planar laser illumination beam is produced from a planar laser illumination beam array (PLIA) comprising an plurality of planar laser illumination modules (PLIMs). Each PLIM comprises a visible laser diode (VLD, a focusing lens, and a cylindrical optical element arranged therewith. The individual planar laser illumination beam components produced from each PLIM are optically combined to produce a composite substantially planar laser illumination beam having substantially uniform power density characteristics over the entire spatial extend thereof and thus the working range of the system.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2001Date of Patent: December 14, 2004Assignee: Metrologic Instruments, Inc.Inventors: Constantine J. Patent number: 6824061Abstract: An hand-held optical symbol scanner assembly employs black-light diodes to illuminate luminescent or phosphorescent bar code symbols that are invisibly printed or formed the surface of an article. The scanner has an array of far blue or UV LEDs or laser diodes on its distal face, and a nosepiece or shroud mounted on the distal face of the scanner device. There can be a transparent plate at the distal end of the nosepiece, mounted at an angle to the optic axis, and a filter (yellow or orange) in advance of the imager device within the scanner.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2003Date of Patent: November 30, 2004Assignee: Industrial Data Entry Automation System IncorporatedInventors: John R. Patent number: 6817529Abstract: A hand-held bar code reader including a housing bounding an interior, a window, a generally planar printed circuit board mounted in the interior, and an optical scanning assembly mounted on the board and including a scanner for directing a light beam through the window at an acute angle relative to the board. A scanning element of the reader is manufactured by spacing a first and second support element apart by a gap bounded by edges of the support elements; injection molding a curable, elastomeric material in flowable form over the edges and into the gap; and allowing the curable, elastomeric material to cure and bond to the edges, and form a flexible hinge in the gap for enabling movement of the support elements relative to one another both away from and toward a stable rest initial position.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2003Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Edward Barkan, Mark Drzymala, Yajun Li

Patent number: 6820031Abstract: A distance detection apparatus cancels signal delay times of transmission and reception circuits (13, 15, 22, 25), which are causes of the errors of distance detection, by receiving a transmission signal turned back directly to measure the difference between the transmission timing and the reception timing at that time, and by setting the value obtained by the measurement as a correction value at the time of obtaining the measurement distance.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2002Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventor: Tadashi Hayakawa

Patent number: 6814293Abstract: A logical relationship is established among peripherals in a wireless local area network managed by a system manager. A readable identifier is associated with each peripheral. A reader for reading the identifiers is respectively associated with selected peripherals during a set-up mode of system operation. A transceiver is in wireless communication with the system manager for identifying the reader and the selected peripherals to advise the system manager of the establishment of the logical relationship.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2001Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Daniel Curry, Ellen Oppenheim, Michael Ryder, Robert Wild, Bruce A. Patent number: 6802451Abstract: An apparatus and actuator assembly for and method of projecting an image on a viewing surface either attached to the apparatus, or on a distant surface, includes sweeping a light beam along a plurality of scan lines that extend over the viewing surface, and selectively illuminating parts of the image at selected positions of the light beam on the scan lines. The viewing surface can be selected by the user by moving a panel on the housing, thereby allowing the user either option for display.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2002Date of Patent: October 12, 2004Assignee: Symbol Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Dmitriy Yavid, Frederick R. Publication number: 20040178257Abstract: A light fixture management system which tracks the location, history and operating characteristics of light fixtures in a structure or a group of structures and surrounding premises. Each light fixture is assigned indicia, for example a bar code, which is stored in a database in association with details of the light fixture. An observer charged with identifying light fixtures in need of repair carries a portable scanner. The observer scans the bar code associated with any light fixture in need of repair and optionally enters into the bar code scanner any observable problem. The scanned information is downloaded into a computer, which may be programmed to establish a repair route for fixtures identified as being in need of repair, based on the locations of the light fixtures and types of problems identified by the observer. Reports can be generated as required with any other desired information.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2004Publication date: September 16, 2004Inventor: R. Clark Jeffery
