    Abstract: A two-dimensional matrix code, method of producing the code and a method and device for reading the code are presented. The code is a round, compact and distinct code that stores an error-corrected 64-bit number, embedded targets, and quality control information within a space small enough for imaging using a compact, hand-held code finder. The code incorporates white space both between the data areas and targets for easy identification of the code and to aid in image processing, and within the data area to correct for errors that sometimes occur when printing using low-quality techniques. Additionally, the code includes features to correct for other printing errors, such as variations in printing press speed and intentional aspect ratio stretching to fill copy space. The code is thus robust enough to be incorporated within newsprint and is also easily imaged using specially constructed code finders.

    Abstract: A digital pen that has an ink writing tip includes a laser on a pen body that directs light toward paper across which the writing tip is stroked. A diffraction grating reflects a reference beam and passes a scattered beam from the substrate toward translation detectors, which consequently receive interference patterns of light. A processor receives the signals from the detectors, generates position signals, and stores the signals. Also, a bar code detector receives a bar code beam from the substrate, and a three dimensional force sensor outputs a signal representative of multidimensional forces applied to the pen. Subsequently, the signals are uploaded to a host processor which combines them to produce rotation-corrected relative positions (if no bar coded paper is used) or rotation-corrected absolute positions (if bar coded paper is used) that can be used to render alpha-numeric characters or graphical representations.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for imaging low contrast one and two-dimensional symbols are provided. A light source directs light onto a target that includes a low contrast symbol. An imaging element receives light reflected off of the target and creates an image of the target therefrom. A light level detector determines the intensity level of the light received by the imaging element, and when the intensity level exceeds a predetermined threshold, a controller causes the image data created by the imaging element to be stored in a data memory. In an embodiment of the invention, a light wand is provided with the light source and imaging element. The light wand is adapted to read low contrast bar code symbols disposed on a substrate material using specular light reflected from the bar code symbols by maintaining the light wand at an optimum angle with respect to the substrate material. A alignment tip may further be utilized with the light wand to ensure that the light wand is maintained at the optimum angle.
