  • Patent number: 7108200
Abstract: Fuel injectors and methods of fuel injection allowing direct control of the flow of fuel at an intensified pressure to the needle. A valve, typically a spool valve, is placed in the fuel passage between the intensifier actuation piston and the needle, and controlled by a control valve which may be independent of the control valve controlling the coupling of actuation fluid and a vent to the intensifier actuation piston. This allows achievement of intensification before initiating injection, and control of multiple injections in a single injection event while maintaining fuel intensification throughout the duration of the injection event. Various embodiments are disclosed, including embodiments having multiple intensifiers, having control of pressure over the needle, having two stage control valve systems for control of intensifier actuation fluid, and combining control of one of the intensifiers and the valve controlling flow of intensified fuel to the needle for injection.

  • Patent number: 7104465
Abstract: A retort is described for use with paperboard containers (48) to reduce moisture absorption during processing of foodstuffs therein. The improvement includes using solid cone spray nozzles (50) with spray angles in the range of about 100 degrees to about 115 degrees. In one embodiment, the distance (D?) between the nozzles and the container is in the range of about 70 mm to about 200 mm. In another embodiment, the flow rate if each nozzle (50) is reduced relative to known systems, while the total vessel flow rate is kept the same as per cubic meter load. Further, an overpressure may be added to the vessel via compressed air. In accordance with other aspects, an Impact reduction is used which relates nozzle flow rate, pressure, distance, etc. with moisture absorption in paperboard containers.

  • Patent number: 7083113
Abstract: A fuel injection apparatus for injecting fuel into the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine. includes a high pressure accumulator, a pressure booster, and a metering valve. The pressure booster includes a working chamber and a control chamber that are separated from each other by an axially movable piston. A pressure change in the control chamber produces a pressure change in a compression chamber that acts on a nozzle chamber via a fuel inlet. The nozzle chamber encompasses a nozzle needle. A nozzle spring chamber that acts on the injection valve element can be filled on the high-pressure side via a line that leads from the compression chamber and contains an inlet throttle restriction. On the outlet side, the nozzle spring chamber is connected to a chamber of the pressure booster via a line that contains an outlet throttle restriction.

  • Patent number: 7021565
Abstract: Common rail fuel injectors typically have difficulty in changing an injection rate during an injection event. Fuel injectors for this common rail fuel injection system include a multi-position admission valve. The admission valve is stoppable at a middle position to inject fuel at a low rate. The lower rate is accomplished by leaking some fuel to drain to reduce injection pressure. The admission valve is also stoppable at a fully open position to inject fuel at a high rate. Fuel injection events are ended, and the fuel injectors maintained between injection events, with the admission valve member in contact with a supply seat to close the high pressure supply passage. This strategy can be used in conjunction with a spring-biased needle valve member to expand fuel injector capabilities.

  • Patent number: 7007860
Abstract: A fuel injector in an engine includes a spring cavity, a piston, a plunger, a spring, a fuel cavity, and a stop plate. The piston is hydraulically controlled to force the plunger down to compress fuel in the fuel cavity. However, under certain conditions, the plunger can contact the stop plate and/or the spring can become overcompressed. Both of these conditions can cause damage to the fuel injector. The present invention locates a pressure equalization channel in such a way as to dampen the motion of the piston to prevent this damage to the fuel injector.
