Patent number: 6976651Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for transferring tissue reels. The system preferably incorporates nozzles that spray an adhesive directly onto moving tissue paper substrate, as opposed to applying adhesive directly to the reel, independent of machine speeds and basis weights of the substrate. Alternatively, the system of the present invention may also apply adhesive directly to the new reel as opposed to the tissue paper substrate. In the preferred embodiment, the new core or reel is brought up to substantially equivalent speed as the moving tissue paper substrate and placed into contact with the moving web of tissue. When the new reel is in place, the valves are activated thereby spraying adhesive across the width of moving tissue. The newly coated substrate sticks substantially immediately to the new core and cleanly tears away from the completed roll.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2002Date of Patent: December 20, 2005Assignee: Valco Cincinnati, Inc.Inventors: Chris Mark Jamison, Christian Viviers, Jerry William Tillery, Richard Phillip Weigand

Patent number: 6705560Abstract: A method is provided for switching reels in a paper machine that includes applying an adhesive onto a continuously running paper web to begin a new paper roll and severing the continuous paper web from the tail end of the newly completed roll. The running paper web is supported by a reel drum and wound onto exchangeable reel shafts in contact with the reel drum in order to form rolls of paper. A hopper with a heater heats an adhesive agent to temporarily lower its viscosity and stickiness for smooth and even applying. A pair of nozzles, mounted on a pair of rodless cylinders and translating therewith, spray jets containing said adhesive onto the web and/or the reel shaft. The web is then advanced onto the reel shaft thereby forming an adhesive interface between the web and the shaft. Tension is applied across the adhesive interface to sever the paper web at the adhesive interface, thereby separating the trailing end of the paper web of the previously completed roll from the current paper roll.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2000Date of Patent: March 16, 2004Assignee: Metso Paper Karlstad Aktiebolg (AB)Inventors: Johan Rågård, Sören Eriksson, Lars-Erik Roland Önnerlöv

Patent number: 6617007Abstract: A method and apparatus of forming coreless rolls of pressure sensitive adhesive tape involves the use of a mandrel assembly having a specific circumferential tape supporting segment thereon for winding tape. The circumferential tape supporting segment has a tape engaging surface portion that, in a radial orientation, is compressible yet sufficiently stiff to support the tape as it is successively wound about the mandrel to form a tape roll, and that is sufficiently pliant to permit ready axial removal of a wound tape roll from the shaft. The innermost wrap of pressure sensitive adhesive tape about the mandrel is masked by an adhesive liner. That liner is formed from one portion of a liner/tab segment which had been applied to the tape previously, and prior to winding, the tape is severed, and the remainder of that liner/tab forms an end tab on the outermost end of the previously formed coreless tape roll.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1999Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: David R. Patent number: 6547178Abstract: The turn-up system for this invention consists of two basic parts: 1. A kraft substrate flat paper tape having a layer of water-activated adhesive on one side and a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive tape (PSAT) on the other side, which may or may not be protected by a releasable liner. The tape is approximately one to four inches in width. The tape is to be applied in a single or multiple spiral pattern covering all or most of the length of the spool. After the application of the tape the reel spool should be loaded into the primary arms and moved into place as usual practice dictates. 2. Nozzles for supplying moisture to the tape wrapped reel spool before it is in the turn-up position (nip).Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2001Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Inventor: Peter A. Rodriguuez

Patent number: 6467719Abstract: Web weakening and severing during turn-up of lightweight paper is accomplished by weakening with a plurality of spaced water spray valves to provide a wetting pattern that is determined by web speed, the type of paper being turned up, and the distance between the valve and the web. A series of adhesive supplying valves are spaced to provide adhesive strips to the web between the wetted areas. A programmable logic controller provides for the desired sequence of actuation of the water and adhesive valves. The valves are mounted on a movable frame that extends across the web from edge to edge. In one embodiment, the adhesive strips are applied behind the wetted areas to allow for a continuous wetted surface across the web. In addition, one or more air valves can be mounted near one or both edges of the web to supply an air blast, which assists the turn-up.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2000Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Inventor: Peter A. Patent number: 6453965Abstract: An applicator for applying a closure sticker to the free end of each of a plurality of rolls (18) mounted side by side, comprises a dispenser (1) for dispensing closure stickers one after the other to a single pick up point (10) and a mount (12) carrying a plurality of closure sticker applicator heads (4-7). The heads (4-7) are spaced along the mount (12) by the pitch of the rolls (18) to which the closure stickers are to be applied and an indexing mechanism (17) moves the mount (12) past the pick up point (10) such that each applicator head (4-7) in turn can pick up a closure sticker. Finally, means (13,14,15,16) for moving the mount (12) ensures that the applicator heads (4-7) are brought into engagement with the said rolls, simultaneously and each with a respective one.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2000Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: Holmdale Precision LimitedInventor: Nigel White
