Extension of the expansion leaf away from the sidewall increases an effective perimeter of the mandrel about which the sheet stock may be wound and retraction of the expansion leaf toward the sidewall decreases the effective perimeter of the mandrel about which the sheet stock may be wound.

The device inhibits the movement of the wound item so that the wound item will not unwind from the spool when not manually drawn from the spool. The device includes a clip body that selectively engages the forward edge of the shelf proximate the spool. A retention mechanism is coupled to the clip body, wherein the retention mechanism receives and retains a section of the wound item, thereby preventing said wound item from inadvertently unwinding.

    Abstract: A roll stand is designed to unwind a material web (60) to a printing machine (2) or other production machine from an unwinding roll (13) in the roll stand and for a stoppage-free automatic shifting to a new roll (5), when the unwinding roll has been emptied to the desired degree. In accordance with the invention, tension is detected in the material web, which while braked in the roll stand is fed into the production machine. Based on that detection, the power supplied to or from a power receiving or power supplying system is regulated in such a way that the tension in the material web, which is fed in to the production machine, is kept constant.

    Abstract: A reel hub (5), an inside rod (70) of which can slide axially when acted upon by a seizing rod (82), forms part of the transfer apparatus (3). By bringing the transfer apparatus opposite the hub of a rotating reel (21, 20), and by withdrawing the inside rod from the hub, the hub is disengaged from a machine (1), the reel continuing to rotate with its hub fixed to the transfer apparatus. This apparatus can then be moved in directions situated in the plane of rotation of the reel and brought opposite another shaft of the machine in order to reattach the hub there by reversing the foregoing procedure. A rotating reel, especially one paying out a strip of cigarette paper, can thus be moved without subjecting the strip of paper to any torsion. Other operations relating to the automatic operation of the machine are also possible with the aid of the transfer apparatus.

    Abstract: A novel roll loading mechanism is described which mechanically lifts a roll of web material into an operative position at the roll mounting of the printing press. This is accomplished by use of a dual chain conveyor having supports cantilevered from the chain, and synchronized to lift both ends of the core simultaneously to the printing press mount. This chain drive and the supports are selectively driven in a forward direction to lift the roll, and reversed to lower the roll to the initial pick-up position. A common drive shaft with sprockets to engage the chains is used to provide simultaneous and synchronized drive to the dual chain conveyors. A triangular configuration of the conveyor chain is used which presents an acute angle having its vertex above the press mount to assure secure position of the roll.

    Abstract: A material handling apparatus is used to sequentially move rolls of material having cores from a loading station to an unwinding station and to sequentially move empty roll cores from the unwinding station. The apparatus includes a generally H-shaped transfer frame having spindle assemblies at opposite ends of the transfer frame. When spindle assemblies at one end of the frame have engaged the core of a first roll at the loading station, the frame is pivoted about the central axes of the spindle assemblies while the first roll remains stationary at the loading station. This pivotal movement moves an empty core along an arcuate path from the unwinding station to a position above the stationary first roll at the loading station. The first roll is then moved from the loading station to the unwinding station. The spindle assemblies have wheels which roll along rails during movement of the first roll from the loading station to the unwinding station.
