  • Patent number: 4887774
Abstract: A safety nut assembly is provided for mounting to the carriage of a backstand apparatus to which a large roll of paper is rotatably mounted. The backstand apparatus includes an inclined screw spindle to which the carriage is threadedly engaged, such that rotation of the screw spindle moves the carriage therealong. The safety nut assembly comprises a mounting portion for secure but removable mounting to the carriage of the backstand. The safety nut assembly further includes a threaded aperture for threadedly engaging the inclined screw spindle. The threaded grooves of the threaded aperture in the safety nut assembly are larger than the threads of the primary weight-bearing bushing in the carriage. Thus, the safety nut assembly will assume a weight-bearing function only upon failure of the primary bushing in the carriage.

  • Patent number: 4886219
Abstract: A device for winding up a foil web, particularly a foil web of synthetic material, into a foil roll on a roll core, has two swivel arms having roll-core receiving portions at their ends, a contact roller, and an actuating cylinder-piston arrangement for the swivel arms and the roll core drive. The swivel arms are swung according to the indication of the increasing diameter of the foil roll. In the area of the contact roller, a winding device with two swingable winding arms is arranged. A roll-core magazine is assigned thereto, having two magazine disks, which are oppositely located and rotatable about a horizontal axis and have corresponding receiving portions for the roll-core ends. To each magazine disk, a basically L-shaped guiding element is assinged which on the vertical flank of the L has an arched leading edge following the path of the roll-core receiving portions, which--over an assembly trough--continues with a downwardly inclined level which is a discharge edge.

Abstract: An improved machine and method for lifting, loading, and maintaining a web roll on a cantelevered spindle so that the web roll may rotate about the longitudinal axis of the spindle thereby permitting the web to be unwound from the web roll. The cantelevered spindle of this machine may be moved, vertically and horizontally, from its normal, unwind position so as to be insertable into the central core opening of the web roll while the web roll is positioned on the floor adjacent to the machine. Thereafter the spindle, and the web roll mounted on the spindle, are moved vertically and horizontally and are returned to the spindle's normal web unwind position. The means utilized to move the spindle horizontally during web roll lifting and loading is also used, in part, to adjust the position of the web roll, during the web unwinding operation, in response to signals from a side-lay sensing device employed to sense the position of the side edge of the web being unwound.

The member may be moved in a manner that will move the second gear along a path from a first disengaged position to a second engaged position. The mechanism includes a rigid support member pivotally mounted to the first shaft for pivotal movement about the shaft toward and away from the path along which the second gear is moved. A third gear is rotatably mounted on the support member and engages the first gear. A fourth gear is also rotatably mounted on the support member, the fourth gear being engaged with the third gear and adjacent to but not engaged with the first gear.

  • Patent number: 4614313
Abstract: Apparatus for continuously supplying a web of sheet material wound on rolls includes a conveyor which carries a roll from a loading station to a splicing station and then to an active or running station. While a running web is being drawn off a roll at the active station, a standby roll is loaded on the conveyor at the loading station and then it is advanced to the splicing station. A stationary core brake located at the active station is responsive to the tension of the running web and applies a drag to the core on which the web of the active roll is wound to maintain the tension at a selected level. When the web on the active roll is nearly exhausted, an endless belt in frictional engagement with the standby roll is driven by a motor and accelerates the roll until the peripheral speed of the latter is equal to about 99 percent of the linear speed of the running web and then the belt is driven from the running web so that the two speeds match.

Abstract: A system and apparatus therefor which stores and processes flexible strip materials and particularly tire manufacturing components such as the tread portion. A portable storage unit has a pair of hollow, cylindrical-shaped spools loosely supported on a pair of cradles within a frame. A pair of annular flanges adjacent the ends of each of the spool surfaces engages stop plates on the frame to retain the spools in position on the cradles when the frame is in both a vertical load and unload position and a horizontal storage and transport position. Drive units for loading and unloading the spools preferably are similar, each including a pair of expanding mandrels and a motor driven chain connected to one of the mandrels. The storage unit is placed on a carriage which is located adjacent the mandrels of the drive units by material handling equipment. The carriage is moved horizontally toward the stationery mandrels until the mandrels are inserted within the spool interiors.
