  • Patent number: 9285005
Abstract: Elastomeric bearings exhibit a reactive positive spring effect, i.e., they produce an opposing torque or force when angular displacement or translation is applied upon them, due to shear stress developed within their elastomer parts. The present invention incorporates a device that exhibits an increasingly strong torque or force in the same direction as the displacement, i.e., a negative spring, under similar conditions of movement. When properly calibrated, the subject type of device can be used in paralleled motion with the ordinary reactive elastomeric bearing to produce a combined effect in which at least a part of the torque or force of the elastomeric bearing is changed or minimized over a range of movement.

The computing device also includes an enclosureless optical disk drive that is housed by an enclosure and other structures of the computing device. The computing device further includes a heat transfer system that removes heat from a heat producing element of the computing device. The heat transfer system is configured to thermally couple the heat producing element to a structural member of the computing device so as to sink heat through the structural member, which generally has a large surface area for dissipating the heat.

Abstract: Provided is a structure for mounting an embedded type disk drive in an electronic system having opposite surfaces corresponding to both surfaces of the disk drive. The structure includes a mounting damper coupled to a corner portion of the disk drive to protrude from either surface of the disk drive, and a mounting groove formed in each of the opposite surfaces of the electronic system at a position corresponding to the mounting damper. As the mounting damper is inserted in the mounting groove, the disk drive is mounted in the electronic system.

Abstract: An energy dissipative element protects hard disk drives from shocks and vibrations. A closed elastic envelope houses a body of open cell foam, a volume of viscous liquid, and a compressible gas. Under compression or expansion of the foam, viscous liquid flows through cell orifices and thereby dissipates energy resulting from external force applied against the elastic wall. The energy dissipative elements are applied between a disk drive housing and an outer case to create a ruggedized portable disk drive module.

Abstract: A non-metallic pad for placement between equipment and its support, for example between a pipe and a beam supporting the pipe. The pad comprises an elongated main body, preferably having male and female dovetails on either end to permit connecting multiple pads together. In profile, the main body has a convex top and a flat bottom. The main body is of a lattice internal structure, with the ribs of the lattice running substantially vertically. The ribs terminate at one end against a closed top surface, and at the other end terminate at a common level to form an open bottom. Injection molding is preferably used to form the pad. Preferred non-metallic materials for the pad are plastics, including glass fiber filled polyurethane, glass fiber filled nylon, and rubber filled polypropylene.

Abstract: A method and system dampens vibrations associated with a device installed in a system by supporting the device with one or more support members having a rigid support portion and a dampening support portion made from an elastic material. In one embodiment, an information handling system fan assembly is made with two shot injection molding to form a support member with an integrated dampener that holds a fan mount disposed in a cooling air channel defined by a fan housing. The fan housing, mount and rigid portion of the support member are formed with one shot from a substantially rigid material and the dampening portion is formed with another shot from a substantially elastic material. A fan couples to the fan mount for installation in the information handling system.
