Abstract: A stabilized 1,1,1-trichloroethane composition containing, as stabilizer therefor, a mixture consisting of a nitrile, 1,4-dioxane, and nitromethane.

Abstract: Partial esters of hydroxy-polycarboxylic acids having at least one unesterified carboxyl group and at least one other carboxyl group esterified with an alcohol having one to 20 repeating oxyalkylene groups and a terminal hydrocarbon radical are useful as additives for inhibiting corrosion and scale on metal parts in a circulating water system. Especially suitable for the use are alkyl polyoxyethylene alcohol partial esters of citric, malic and tartaric acids. Preparation and use of several preferred partial esters of the class are detailed.

Abstract: A hot galvanized strip, plate or other ferrous metal workpiece is moved continuously from a cooling tower, and while at a temperature within a range of about 130.degree. to 180.degree. F. its zinc coating surfaces are subjected to the application of a white rust inhibiting master aqueous chemical treating solution. The solution forms a substantially transparent protective film on the coating surfaces that is adherent thereto. The solution contains the compounds and reaction products of two solutions as mixed together, one of which is made up of sodium dichromate dissolved in and reacted with ethylene glycol and the other of which is made of potassium dichromate dissolved in and reacted with ethylene glycol.

Abstract: Functional fluid compositions comprising a major amount of a base stock material which is an ester or amide of an acid phosphorus, a di- or tricarboxylic acid ester, an ester of a polyhydric compound or mixtures thereof, optionally minor amounts of other base stock materials or base stock modifiers such as viscosity index improvers, cavitation damage inhibitors, and lubricity agents, and an additive amount of an acid scavenger and corrosion inhibitor which is a monoepoxy norbornyl carboxylate such as C.sub.1.sub.-4 alkyl-5,6-epoxynorbornane carboxylate. The compositions are particularly useful as aircraft hydraulic fluids.

Abstract: Ethers of polyglycerols and an improved method of preparing said ethers are disclosed. The ethers are prepared by reacting a purified polyglycerol with an alpha olefin epoxide in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide catalyst.

Abstract: A novel antifreeze composition is provided which comprises a water soluble liquid alcohol freezing point depressant and an inhibitor. The freezing point depressant is preferably at least one water soluble alcohol containing from one to four carbon atoms inclusive and from one to four hydroxy groups inclusive such as ethylene glycol. The inhibitor comprises at least one substance selected from the group consisting ofA. compounds corresponding to the following structural formula: ##SPC1##Wherein R.sub.1 is an alkylene radical containing from zero to 12 carbon atoms inclusive, R.sub.2 is an alkyl radical containing from one to 10 carbon atoms inclusive and R.sub.3 is an alkylene radical containing from one to 12 carbon atoms inclusive, andB. the mono- and di-metal salts, the mono- and di-ammonium salts, and the mono- and di-amides of compounds corresponding to the above structural formula.
