Patent number: 6431103Abstract: A motor winch, which is suitable as a sheet or halyard winch (11) for sailing yachts, etc., has an integrated electric or hydraulic drive. The motor (52) is integrated into the winch in such a way that it is located within the winch body and in particular within the winch drum (16). The motor brings about rotation of the winch drum through a multistage gear located in the winch foot (22), optionally assisted by an epicyclic gear (54). A manual operation with a winch crank is made possible by a winch crank nut (32) in the winch head (29). The manual driving shaft is past the somewhat eccentrically positioned motor. A reverse rotation or veering function can be provided in which following the disconnection of the drum locking mechanism, the motor is rotated back in braking manner with a controlled speed.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2001Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Inventor: Helmut Meyerdierks

Patent number: 6029952Abstract: A single mechanism mounted at the head of a winch has a double-selector function, allowing either 1st or 2nd ratio of drive to a drum to be selected upon initial rotation of the drive shaft. The mechanism is mounted coaxially with the drum and shaft and has coaxial inner and outer control buttons. Its body can be mounted on the end of the drive shaft from above.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1997Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Lewmar Marine LimitedInventors: Richard David John Huggett, David Roberts

Patent number: 4725043Abstract: A winch has four drive trains of progressively increasing mechanical advantage between its drive shaft (3) and drum (8). If a selector (40) is engaged, rotation of the shaft in successively opposite senses will cause automatically engagement of the first third and fourth trains in sequence. If the selector (40) is not engaged and an override control (80,81,82) is appropriately set, the sequence second, third, fourth trains is followed. But the override may be locked so that only second and third trains are engaged alternately.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1986Date of Patent: February 16, 1988Assignee: Lewmar Marine LimitedInventors: Philip J. Patent number: 4699360Abstract: An automatic three-speed winch comprising a base plate (1), a bollard (2) mounted for rotation relative to said base plate and carrying teeth (7) on its inner surface, arranged to cooperate through intermediate gears, with at least one driving gear (5, 6) around a central shaft (14) of the winch. An element (21, 22) is provided, which is mounted for rotation between a first and a second position about the central shaft (4) of the winch, which element carries three shafts (12, 14, 20), with a pair of gears (8, 11; 18, 19; 10, 13) being mounted for rotation about each shaft. The transition between the three different speeds takes place fully automatically by just changing the direction of rotation of the driving gear, without requiring any further operation on the winch.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1987Date of Patent: October 13, 1987Assignee: Enkes Marine B.V.Inventor: Leonardus J. van der Aa

Patent number: 4595173Abstract: A selftailing capstan winch having a stationary shaft element which holds bearings for a winch drum and houses a driving shaft adapted to be crank handle driven from above. The shaft element has a fixed radial arm projecting outwardly about a drum top flange and into an upper annular rope groove. The driving shaft is mounted eccentrically in the stationary shaft element. The driving engagement with the drum is established by a pinion on the rotary shaft which simply engages an interior, relative broader toothed rim on the drum. With this arrangement, the drum is not rotated as quickly as the crank handle; however, the driving arrangement is simple and robust.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1984Date of Patent: June 17, 1986Inventor: Frode Anderson

Patent number: 4582299Abstract: A marine winch has a winch drum which is totally closed at the top, mounted on a base housing in bearings so as to rotate relative thereto on a vertical axis. The winch drum is driven in a given direction by pulling on a cord which is wound around a self-recoiling pulley in the base housing to thereby rotate the pulley and associated ratchet or clutch means and pinion gear which drives a gear ring on the winch drum. A sprag clutch is operatively connected between the winch and the base housing to prevent rotation of the winch drum in a direction opposite the given direction and to transmit load torque applied to the winch drum to a gear plate to automatically change gear ratios. An infinitely variable hydraulic drive means is also described.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1984Date of Patent: April 15, 1986Inventor: Ian A. Royle

Patent number: 4333362Abstract: The disclosed speed-shift apparatus is for a sheet winch with a drum rotatably mounted on a base and can effect the shift of the speed-change ratio and the winch winding by one hand. A one-way transmission means having pawls and pawl-engaging grooves is provided between an input shaft and the winch drum. An interrupting member is rotatably carried by the base so as to selectively disengage said pawls from said pawl-engaging grooves and the interrupting means also has grooves for engaging said pawls.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1980Date of Patent: June 8, 1982Assignee: Asahi Malleble Iron Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masumi Sugioka, Norihiro Ogawa

Patent number: RE30423Abstract: A variable speed winch including a uni-directional drum rotatable initially by the clockwise motion of a handle in a clockwise sense only. The winch also includes a gear selector including a control plate rotatable with respect to the drum into an extreme clockwise position wherein a first gear ratio is selected. The gear selector further includes ratchet structure, splined to a shaft rotatable by the handle. The ratchet structure is slidable axially with respect to the shaft under the influence of a cam structure responsive to the relative angular displacements of the handle with respect to the control plate. The control plate has recesses engageable by respective spring-loaded balls captively supported by the ratchet structure. The balls are adapted to enter and lock within the recesses in response to an anti-clockwise rotation of the handle sufficient to cause axial sliding of the ratchet structure, with respect to the shaft, under the influence of the cam structure.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1978Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Barlow Marine LimitedInventors: Albert J. Patent number: RE30881Abstract: A manually powered multi-speed winch has an automatic drive disengagement upon drive reversal which is provided by an axially movable member in one drive train which in a first axial position is engageable for drive transmission through a pawl and ratchet unidirectional drive means. The drive means in its drive-transmitting condition prevents movement of the member away from that first position. Upon drive reversal the unidirectional drive means is ineffective either to transmit drive or to maintain the member in its first position and it moves axially to a second position in which the drive means are disengaged. The member is biased towards that second axial position but is manually movable to the first by a control button accessible at the outside of the winch. The button may be lockable to override the automatic disengagement.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1980Date of Patent: March 16, 1982Assignee: Lewmar Marine LimitedInventors: Richard D. J.
