  • Patent number: 6171534
Abstract: A method of making a loudspeaker cone and surround assembly comprises clamping at least the outer marginal edge of a cone in a mold having a cavity defining a surround and injecting an elastomeric material into the cavity through an annular orifice extending substantially continuously around the said marginal outer edge to form a surround attached to the outer marginal edge of the cone. The method includes the step of feeding the elastomeric material to the annular orifice through an annular feed chamber extending around the mold cavity. The annular orifice may be narrow in width in comparison to the thickness of the surround and the method may comprise the step of separating the surround from an annular ring of sprue formed by elastomer which has solidified in or outside the annular orifice by tearing while the elastomer is still hot from the injection molding step.

  • Patent number: 6165393
Abstract: The present invention is for providing a production method of a dielectric lens with the excellent productivity, capable of achieving the shape accuracy or density homogeneity of the demanded level, and capable of injection molding of a matching layer without forming a gap with respect to a lens main body. A lens main body is formed by the injection compression molding method, using a composite dielectric material containing a thermoplastic resin as the dielectric material for the lens main body. After forming a matching layer (first surface side matching layer) on either surface of the front or rear surfaces (first surface) side of the lens main body, and injecting a matching layer material, a matching layer (second surface side matching layer) is formed on the other surface of the lens main body (that is, the matching layer is formed by the two operation injection molding method of injecting to one surface side of the lens main body, and then injection to the other surface side).

  • Patent number: 6162381
Abstract: A plurality of mutually separate electrodes supported by a support frame are pre-molded into an integral electrode assembly in which the electrodes are connected with each other through resin moldings. The electrode assembly thus formed is cut off from the support frame to provide a primary product in which the electrodes are electrically disconnected from each other. The primary product is then molded into a molded unit having the electrodes embedded therein. Preferably, the primary product is placed in a mold and supported at a predetermined location by a plurality of support pins which abut against the resin moldings. The support pins are removed from the molded unit while leaving corresponding through-holes after a molten resin is poured into the mold and cooled. The electrodes embedded in the molded unit are prevented from being exposed to the outside of the molded unit via through-holes.

  • Patent number: 6126877
Abstract: The cavity of a mold for making a plastics material part is lined using at least two, preferably decorative, pieces of film. The pieces of film are shaped and cut out so as to be accurately juxtaposed in the film cavity. Molten plastics material is introduced into the mold cavity in register with each piece of film in controlled manner so that the front of plastics material flowing within the mold cavity for the purpose of filling it advances within the mold so as to stretch each piece of film in centrifugal manner so that the film is neither displaced nor folded. The fronts of plastics material advancing over each piece of film meet either in locations of the mold where there is no film or else in register with the facing edges of two pieces of films, where appropriate, so that the entire surface of each piece of film is covered in a layer of plastics material. If necessary an additional quantity of molten plastics material is then introduced into the mold cavity so as to fill it completely.

  • Patent number: 6106755
Abstract: A urethane hammer or other hand-held striking tool having a handle portion cast of a lower durometer, more flexible grade of urethane material, and a head portion which is cast around a metallic weight at the end of the handle portion. The flexible handle absorbs shocks, while the hard material of the head provides a durable, effective striking surface. The tool is cast using a two-stage process. In the first stage, the handle portion is cast with the metal weight located in its end. The handle portion is then placed in a second mold in which the weight on the end of the handle extends into a larger cavity corresponding to the head portion of the tool. The higher durometer urethane material is then cast in this cavity so as to encase the weight and the end of the handle portion.

Abstract: A flexible sensor, such as a membrane switch, is molded into a plastic automotive panel by a low temperature, low pressure, method which avoids damage to the switch while insuring its placement at a desired depth below the surface of the panel. This is achieved by a process which includes a first step of spraying a mold with a rapid gelling liquid plastic to a preselected thickness. After the plastic has firmed, the sensor is placed thereon and is encapsulated by spraying with a second layer of the plastic. The resulting shell with the embedded sensor may then be provided with a backing, such as a plastic foam.

  • Patent number: 5753272
Abstract: Apparatus for manufacturing a composite insulator including an FRP core rod which is integrally provided with a sheath and a plurality of sheds formed of an electrically insulating polymeric material. The core rod has a longitudinal end portion provided with a seat for a metal fitting, which is integral with the sheath. To manufacture such a composite insulator, the core rod is placed in a mold cavity of a mold assembly, with a seat forming member detachably fitted to the end portion of the core rod and arranged between a pair of mold halves. An inner space is formed between a seat forming member and the core rod, which is in communication with the mold cavity. An electrically insulating polymeric material is introduced into the mold cavity to form the sheath and sheds, while admitting the polymeric material into the space between the seat forming member and the core rod so as to form a seat for the metal fitting, which is essentially free from burrs.

Abstract: An integrated electrical system includes a first conductor for receiving current from power lines or other equipment. The conductor is coupled to a conventional vacuum switch for controlling flow of current through the system. A current collector coupled to the vacuum switch collects current from the vacuum switch. A second conductor coupled to the current collector delivers current to equipment or lines externally of the device. The components of the system are housed within an inner epoxy encapsulated within Polysil. The epoxy preferably has temperature characteristics which are similar to that of Polysil to prevent cracking due to temperature stress. At least one sensor may also be provided integrally with the components for detecting faults or for sensing general power line conditions. A preferred voltage sensor has resistive shielding for accurate sensing in adverse environments.

Abstract: Chiral composite material is made using an apertured plate (2) having apertures (3) therethrough corresponding to the desired locations of chiral elements (4) in the composite material. • Patent number: 5628949
Abstract: A mold process for producing a finished solid surfaced countertop in which a mold of the product to be produced is placed in a substantially horizontal manner. A series of barriers are constructed atop a flat polished surface of the mold and creates a negative shape of the countertop product to be produced. A release wax surface is applied over the exposed edges of the mold and is followed by the spraying a predetermined layer of a high-quality resin surface coating. The coating is allowed to gel to a point at which a plasticized substrate material is poured into the mold and over the resin surface coating. A catalyst is added to the substrate material prior to pouring and elevates the temperature of the substrate and the surface coating during the hardening and curing process. The surface coating bonds to the substrate and cures without the development of pinholes or other imperfections in the surface coating.

  • Patent number: 5624615
Abstract: Modular stone panels simulate assembled masonry, and are useful for decorative walls, retaining walls, facings for structures and the like. Precast stone-faced panels are made by setting stones such as field stone having at least one relatively flat face, substantially directly on the bottom of a rectangular mold. The stones are set in the mold individually while packing sand around and between the stones but not under them. This is done by sliding each stone laterally across the bottom of the mold, thereby packing the sand while substantially keeping the stones supported immovably against the bottom. The stones do not float on a sand bed and the sand between them is packed. Thus the stone and sand are less readily displaced by concrete poured over them to fill the mold. The concrete bonds part way into the packed sand, which can be facilitated by vibration, causing a liquid portion of the concrete to diffuse into the sand.
