  • Publication number: 20080053599
Abstract: The invention provides a method for preforming a prepreg material impregnated with thermosetting resin continuously in an uncured state. Sheets of prepreg material are pulled out from rollers and laminated, which is then bent to a predetermined cross-sectional shape in a bending device. The prepreg material is formed into a long product continuously in a mold having a heater. The temperature and pressure applied to the prepreg material in the mold is selected so that the heating temperature is either room temperature or a heating temperature low enough to prevent the thermosetting resin from gelating, and so that the pressure is within a pressure range enabling the prepreg material to maintain its molded state.

A plurality of mold segments are arranged such that one or more segments periodically close on the one or more streams of molten plastic and define discrete part forming cavities when closed. A pressure differential is created within the discrete part forming cavities to shape the molten plastic accordingly. Abstract: A rebar forming apparatus includes a malleable material supply station for continuously supplying a malleable planar material and a malleable material forming station for forming the malleable material into first and second corresponding shell portions and related rebar products. The apparatus also includes a core pultrusion station and a cladding forming station for respectively forming core and cladding layers. A shell forming station is positioned downstream of the core and cladding forming stations which unites the first and second shell portions to form an outer shell with the core and cladding layers contained therein. The rebar product includes shell portions which are matably configured to form a disposable outer shell over the core and cladding layers. Related reinforcing composite product forming methods also include the use of a removable outer shell.

Abstract: The present invention provides a profiling process which allows for the material sheet to be profiled so that the surface is minimally affected and only slight plastic deformation of the material occurs, and yet uniform three-dimensional structuring takes place. Additionally, the present invention allows for an improved inherent stability in the plane of the profiled material sheet to be achieved while only minimally affecting the cross-section.

Abstract: A slitting and scoring machine includes an upper tooling roller and a lower tooling roller that cooperate to define a tooling nip. Each tooling roller includes an alternating series of coaxially arranged annular knives, annular dies, and annular mandrels. A web of insulation is drawn through the tooling nip to simultaneously (i) cut the web into strips, (ii) score the strips in a manner that promotes the forming of the strips, and (iii) partially form the strips into modified U-shapes. Each strip includes a longitudinally extending middle segment and a pair of longitudinally extending side segments that extend away from the middle segment in a divergent manner to define a longitudinally extending channel. Longitudinally extending grooves are formed by the scoring at the junctures of the middle segment and the side segments. The scoring/grooves promote the divergent shape of the strip.

  • Patent number: 6190156
Abstract: A continuous thermoplastic wire is heated and fed into a coil forming apparatus having a rotative drum holding an injection nozzle so that it registers with and be linked in a common rotative movement to a threaded mandrel also supported by the drum. The wire discharged by the nozzle slidably engages the threads of the mandrel into a helical pattern, the mandrel being radially and coaxially surrounded by a cooled sleeve. The wire will thus solidify along the helical thread of the mandrel, to form a continuous plastic coil being discharged at the downstream extremity of the mandrel and sleeve assembly. Due to the fact that the drum, mandrel and nozzle all rotate in a common rotative movement, it is possible to select the direction and speed of rotation of the three last-mentioned elements so that the coil being discharged have an ouput discharge translational speed, while being exempt of any absolute rotational movement about its longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 6174483
Abstract: A reinforcing lamina sheet and a process of making a reinforcing sheet for use in a glue laminated beam. The reinforcing lamina sheet increases the compressive and/or tensile strength of the glue laminate beam. The lamina sheet is formed from unidirectionally oriented reinforcing filaments, preferably aramid filaments in an epoxy resin, and is cured in a curved configuration. The resulting lamina sheet includes filaments which are uniformly tensioned and, therefore, when a load is applied to the glue laminate beam having the reinforcing lamina sheet, the fibers receive the load substantially simultaneously. The process of forming the lamina sheet includes drawing reinforcement yarns through a resin bath to form a resin impregnated substantially planar yarn band, contacting one side of the resulting impregnated band with a curved heated surface to promote partial curing of at least the contacting surface of the band, and further applying heat to at least the opposite side of the partially cured band.

  • Patent number: 5772938
Abstract: A composite storage tank is built which has double wall characteristics. A method of building the tank comprises the steps of applying a viscous resinous core material to a support surface and then winding onto, into or along with the viscous resinous core material discrete filament bundles. The resinous core material encapsulates the filament bundles, but does not significantly penetrate into an interior of the bundles. The substantially resin-free interiors provide flow paths for the ready detection of wall leakage. The resultant composite storage tank has double wall characteristics. A crack or hole in either an inside or outside surface which extends at least to the encapsulated filament bundle interiors will alert the tank's operator/owner to a leakage problem.

A series of downsizing rollers reduce the outside diameter of the liner a preselected amount. • Patent number: 5626812
Abstract: A novel carbon material is obtained by bending at least one carbon atom layer of graphite in at least one selected region along either, or both, of lines I and II in FIG. 1. The bending can be accomplished by scanningly picking the carbon atom layer(s) with a probe of an atomic force microscope or another scanning microscope. The obtained carbon material has at least one round bend having a width of 0.1-10 nm and at least one flap region having a triangular, rectangular or still differently polygonal shape in plan view. When the carbon atom layer(s) is bent with very small radii of curvature, a finely striped ridge-and-groove structure appears in the round bend. The physical properties of the obtained carbon material are uniquely determined by the direction(s) of bending, width of each bend, shape and size of each flap region and the stripe pitch of the ridge-and-groove structure.
