Molding Trapped Undercut Article Portion Patents (Class 264/318)
  • Patent number: 5639416
Abstract: A process for molding dimensionally accurate plastic articles using a low pressure injection molding technique. The process utilizes a two-piece silicone rubber mold having a cavity representative of the shape of the article to be molded. The mold is substantially encased on all sides in a rigid mold box to prevent deformation of the cavity during the molding process (10). The mold box and the encased mold are placed in a vacuum chamber, and a vacuum is drawn on the chamber to evacuate the cavity (20). A predetermined amount of a reactive mixture is simultaneously mixed and injected under pressure into the mold to form the plastic article (30). The amount of material injected is sufficient to fill the cavity but not sufficient to distort the cavity. The chamber is vented (40) and the mold is removed from the mold box (50). The mold is flexed in order to remove the plastic article from the mold (60).

  • Patent number: 5512228
Abstract: A tamper-evident thermoplastic fitment having a spout and a closure for said spout are welded to a polymer-coated paperboard container or to a flexible plastic container. The fitment and closure are initially molded simultaneously but with a substantial space between the two parts interconnected by an elongated runner which conducts molten plastic from the closure to the fitment. Upon retraction of the core of the mold, the closure is pulled into the spout until shoulders on the parts engage, whereupon the closure is stripped from the mold core. The runner comprises a tear tab which slides through an apertured space on the closure. When the parts engage tangs on the tear tab engage the space, making the assembly tamper-evident. Abstract: A nylon cable tie having a head and a strap terminating in a tip is formed in a mold cavity defined between a first mold part combined wish a second mold part by injecting molten nylon material into the mold cavity through an insulated runner system and a gate that converges from the runner system toward the mold cavity and does not have a hot tip adjacent thereto. The mold parts are separated while retaining a portion of the head in a head region in the first mold part and a portion of the tip in a tip region in the second mold part, in order to separate the head from the second mold part, to separate the tip from the first mold part, and to separate a major portion of the strap from the first and second mold parts. The mold parts are further separated while retaining said portion of the head in the head region to thereby remove said portion of the tip from the second mold part. The head is ejected from the head region by protracted ejector pins that penetrate the head region from within the first mold part.

Abstract: A fluid compressor has a cylinder (17), a rotary rod (21), and a helical blade (33) that defines work chambers (44) between the cylinder and the rod. The compressor successively compresses and conveys a fluid from a suction end to a discharge end through the work chambers according to the rotation of the rod. The continuous helical blade is formed by pressurizing and injecting synthetic resin material such as tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkylvinylether polymer resin into a mold through two gates (39), so that a weld line (43) of the blade is located in an intermediate region between a suction pressure region and a discharge pressure region of the blade.

Abstract: An injection molding apparatus is disclosed for forming articles with internal undercuts by the use of lifter heads with transversely extending protrusions. The lifter heads are received in recesses in the mold projections which form the interior of the molded article. The transverse protrusions of the lifter heads extend into the voids surrounding the projections to form the undercuts. The lifter heads are extended outwardly from the projections to remove the article from the mold. Ejector pins move the molded article outwardly from the lifter heads. The lifter head protrusions have inward ramping surfaces which facilitate the removal of the molded article. A lifter head may include two, angularly offset protrusions which form two undercuts near the corner between intersecting internal walls of the molded article. The protrusions have beveled release surfaces which allow the molded article to shift transversely off the lifter heads.
