  • Patent number: 5266262
Abstract: A method for forming a large thickness flange at an end of a blow molding tube by injection molding using a die assembly. The blow molding tube is sufficiently cooled down before insertion into injection molding dies. The sizes and dimensions of tube holding portions of the injection molding die assembly, which hold the blow molding tube at a portion adjacent to the end, and those of a mating injection molding mandrel are set in conformity to its size and dimension of the blow molding tube after thermal shrinkage thereof caused by cooling of the tube. Thus, any gap between the blow molding tube and injection molding die assembly is eliminated, so that any leakage of molten resin through such a gap between the contact surfaces of the blow molding tube and those of the injection molding dies and mandrel can be perfectly prevented during the injection molding step. For instance, the method is useful for producing an intake manifold used in an automotive engine room.

  • Patent number: 5169470
Abstract: The vessel portion of a gas-tight container suitable for packaging fresh foods is produced as a composite of paperboard and polymer film. A pair of folded paperboard blanks, pre-cut and pre-formed, are inserted into the opposite halves of split mold elements to a blow molding machine. Vacuum orifices in each mold half unit temporarily secure the position of a respective paperboard blank. The paperboard lined mold halves are closed upon a hot, extruded parison of malleable polymer leaving an end portion of the parison tube projecting from the closed mold unit. A fluid conducting needle penetrates this projected end portion to inflate the parison with an apppropriate blowing gas. Such inflation expands the malleable polymer, seamlessly and creaselessly, into the internal corners and crevices of the folded paperboard blanks. Following chilling, the mold unit is opened and the pair of paperboard blanks are ejected as a singular unit, joined by a molded flange of the continuous polymer film.

  • Patent number: 5034179
Abstract: In the discontinuous manufacture of multilayer, co-extruded, hose-like thermoplastics material preforms used in the production of large volume multilayer hollow members in a divided blow mold, at least two different annular shaped material melts are brought together in series within an axially extending annular piston to form a multilayer material melt. An annular flow channel in the piston receives the layers of material melt. The flow channel widens in a funnel-like manner toward an annular storage space. The preform is subsequently ejected from the storage space through an annular nozzle gap by the annular piston moving in its axial direction. The annular piston acts as a co-extrusion head and is pressed upward by the multilayer material melts. In supplying the material melts from extruders into the flow channel of the piston, the material melts flow first in the extrusion direction and then are redirected for flow radially inwardly into the flow channel of the piston.

  • Patent number: 5009939
Abstract: The vessel portion of a gas-tight container suitable for packaging fresh foods is produced as a composite of paperboard and polymer film. A pair of folded paperboard blanks, pre-cut and pre-formed, are inserted into the opposite halves of split mold elements to a blow molding machine. Vacuum orifices in each mold half unit temporarily secure the position of a respective paperboard blank. The paperboard lined mold halves are closed upon a hot, extruded parison of malleable polymer leaving an end portion of the parison tube projecting from the closed mold unit. A fluid conducting needle penetrates this projected end portion to inflate the parison with an appropriate blowing gas. Such inflation expands the malleable polymer, seamlessly and creaselessly, into the internal corners and crevices of the folded paperboard blanks. Following chilling, the mold unit is opened and the pair of paperboard flanks are ejected as a singular unit, joined by a molded flange portion of the continuous polymer film.

  • Patent number: 5004578
Abstract: The invention concerns a process and an apparatus for the production of hollow bodies from thermoplastic material, the wall of which is in the form of a laminate, by extrusion blow molding. Tubular preforms for making the hollow bodies are first produced in an intermittent mode of operation, the wall thereof also being in the form of a laminate which includes a suitable number of layers. Within an extrusion head having an annular storage chamber for receiving the laminate-formation preform and an annular piston for emptying the storage chamber, the flows of material for forming the layers of the laminate of the preform are passed through the annular piston into the storage chamber in which they combine to form the laminate. The width of the outlets at which the flows of material issue from the annular piston can be so selected that it is proportional to the thickness of the respective layers to be formed therefrom in the laminate produced in the storage chamber.

  • Patent number: 4990382
Abstract: A laminated container blow molded from an extruded parison wherein both the parison and the resultant blow molded container are of a multi-layered construction. Most particularly, the parison is provided with a thin outer gloss coat which maintains the clarity and gloss of the resultant container so as to provide the container with a glass-like appearance. In the forming of the parison, the thin gloss coat is extruded with the remainder of the parison and is bonded to the remainder of the parison by an adhesive layer. The thin outer gloss coat is particularly effective when a relatively thick intermediate layer of the parison is formed of reground scrap containers. Usually the relatively thick intermediate layer is formed of a blend of the reground scrap containers and virgin polypropylene.
