Abstract: A process for cooling a heated polymer film by applying to both surfaces of the heated film, a cooling liquid adapted for wetting contact with the film surfaces. The viscosity of the layers of liquid adhering to the film surfaces is significantly reduced to facilitate removal of such liquid layers. The viscosity can be reduced by significantly raising the temperature of the adhering liquid layers after the film has been sufficiently cooled or by changing the adhering liquid to a different liquid of lower viscosity. Preferably, the liquid layers are removed for the film surfaces by conveying the liquid carrying film upwardly to cause the liquid layers to each form into a generally triangular shape with the vertex extending upwardly and blowing air stream downwardly against each such vertex.

Abstract: An end portion-treating method and apparatus for manufacturing a synthetic resin film by first extruding through a slit die or coating with the use of a coater onto or on a conveyor belt or drum a fluid synthetic resin composition in a smooth layer form, and then solidifying it. Gas is blown at both end portions of the film of the fluid synthetic resin composition extruded onto the surface of the conveyor belt or drum to change the sectional form of both end portions. A synthetic resin film is obtained without creasing in the process of drying or cooling of the film or lifting of the film off the surface of the conveyor belt. A film of superior quality is thus provided. Also, since both longitudinal end portions of the film need not be trimmed off and discarded, the film manufacturing effifiency is improved, and the manufacturing cost is reduced substantially.

Abstract: Processes for extruding thermoplastic coatings on substrates are provided by this invention. The processes include directing a substrate between two pressure roll means wherein one of the pressure roll means has a temperature less than the melting point of the thermoplastic. Next, the processes include providing a molten curtain of thermoplastic which is then directed with a current of a fluid medium, such as compressed air, so as to cause at least a first portion of the molten curtain to contact the first pressure roll means for a time sufficient to form a thermoplastic sheet. Next, the processes include extruding at least this thermoplastic sheet with the substrate between the two pressure roll means so as to form an extruded substrate having a thermoplastic layer which is separable from the substrate.

Abstract: A process for producing an information carrier containing recorded audio and/or video information wherein a web of a thermoplastic material is extruded onto the patterned surface of a metal master and pressure is applied to force said thermoplastic material into contact with the metal master. The thermoplastic material is cooled to a temperature below its softening point to form an imaged thermoplastic web which is separated from the metal master. Then a thin film of metal particles is deposited on the imaged surface of the thermoplastic web and said metallized thermoplastic web is laminated with a substrate carrying an uncured coating of a radiation curable resin. The resin is cured and individual information carriers are separated from the web of information carrying laminate. A center hole is placed in the separated individual information carriers, when appropriate.
