Patent number: 6749661Abstract: A method and an apparatus for advantageously introducing a flame and a high velocity oxidizing gas into a furnace for metal melting, refining and processing, particularly steel making in an electric arc furnace. The steel making process of an electric arc furnace is made more efficient by shortening the time of the scrap melting phase and introducing an effective high velocity oxidizing gas stream into the process sooner to decarburize the melted metal. In one implementation of an apparatus, improved efficiency is obtained by mounting a fixed burner/lance closer to the hot face of the furnace refractory at an effective injection angle. This mounting technique shortens the distance that the flame of the burner has to melt through the scrap to clear a path to the molten metal and shortens the distance the high velocity oxygen from the lance travels to the slag-metal interface thereby increasing its penetrating power.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2001Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Process Technology International, Inc.Inventor: Valery G. An outer wall of a body section of the jacket is formed from a second material that maintains its structural properties when exposed to external temperatures above 1100° C. for prolonged periods when the jacket is cooled by coolant flow, whereby the outer wall acts as a structural member that contributes to supporting the lance at these temperatures.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2001Date of Patent: May 20, 2003Assignee: Technological Resources Pty LtdInventor: Martin Joseph Dunne

Patent number: 6368550Abstract: A lance is provided for processing molten metal baths located in metallurgical tanks, and for heating the tanks. A first lance body is displaceable in a second lance body. A mechanism is provided for displacing the first lance body relative to the second lance body such that in a raised burner position of the first lance body, burner nozzles disposed in the second lance body are uncovered by the first lance body and are axially spaced from the lance mouth of the first lance body to receive gas discharge from the lance mouth and to allow burner operation. In a lowered blower position of the first lance body, the burner nozzles are covered thereby. The mechanism for displacing the lance bodies relative to one another permits infinitely variable spacing of the burner nozzles from the lance mouth that is provided for the discharge of gas.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Technometal Gesellschaft für Metalltechnologie mbHInventors: Friedhelm Wagener, Arno Luven

Patent number: 6319458Abstract: A pulverized coal injecting apparatus includes a cylindrical inner pipe for feeding pulverized coal into a tuyere of a blast furnace. A cylindrical outer pipe coaxially surrounds the inner pipe. A spiral swirler is formed on the surface of the inner pipe and the pulverized coal is supplied through the inner pipe, while a combustible fluid is supplied through a space defined between the outer and inner pipes. The pulverized coal injecting apparatus further includes a plurality of dimples formed on a surface of a leading end portion of the inner pipe for reducing fluid flow resistance so as to improve the mixing of the pulverized coal with the combustible fluid. The fluid flow becomes efficient so as to improve the combustion efficiency of the pulverized coal. Thus, the oxygen enrichment cost and fuel costs are reduced.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2000Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.Inventors: Jin Kyung Jung, Sang Suk Yuk, Bong Rae Cho, Gap Ryeol Kim, Youn Sueg Choi
