Flexible Projection (e.g., Lip Seal, Etc.) Patents (Class 277/402)
  • Patent number: 6056293
Abstract: A sealing assembly for a pump shaft, having a metal supporting structure, and a sealing ring in turn having a main sealing lip and a secondary lip, which extend axially in opposite directions and define an annular cavity together with a lateral surface of the shaft. When undeformed, the diameters of the two lips are such as to respectively determine a predetermined amount of interference and a radial clearance with the shaft. The sealing ring is so formed as to be deformed elastically by the interference fit between the main lip and the shaft, so as to cause the secondary lip to cooperate with the shaft with substantially no interference.

  • Patent number: 6027122
Abstract: A sealing assembly for a rolling element bearing includes first and second screens fixed respectively to first and second rings of the bearing, with each screen including a respective rigid reinforcement and a respective elastomeric covering. The first screen includes a sleeve portion and a flange portion and also includes two sealing lips which cooperate with a sealing surface of the second screen. The first screen also has an annular projection extending from the sleeve portion that is adapted to be interposed, together with an extension of the elastomeric covering, between the front surface of the first ring of the bearing and a shoulder of the bearing itself. The second screen has a phonic wheel defined by a flange portion of the rigid reinforcement and a magnetized portion of the elastomeric covering. The elastomeric covering of the second screen has a front surface projecting beyond the front surface of the first ring.

  • Patent number: 6019571
Abstract: Side channel compressor, in which the gap (7) existing between the rotor (2) and the housing parts (1) surrounding the rotor (2) is sealed off using a sealing tape (8) introduced into a peripheral groove (9) provided in the corresponding wall regions of the housing parts (1). An impairment of the operability of the side channel compressor by a sealing tape attached to the housing is largely ruled out, in that the sealing tape (8) is held by a solidifying compound (10) which is introduced into groove widenings (11) provided at a plurality of points located in a distributed manner over the circumference of the peripheral groove (9) and which makes a positive connection with the sealing tape (8).

  • Patent number: 5997005
Abstract: A hub seal for installation on the wheel end of a heavy duty trailer or truck is disclosed which includes an annular casing defining a radially outer circumferential canal, a thrust ring defined by a ring of polymeric material disposed within the circumferential canal, and an annular sleeve mounted coaxial with the annular casing. The annular sleeve includes a deflector ring configured to mechanically remove at least a portion of the thrust ring upon relative rotation of the casing and sleeve to create a minimal running clearance between the deflector ring and the thrust ring. A method of fabricating a hub seal having a machinable thrust ring is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5980115
Abstract: A bearing seal includes a bearing housing which houses a rotatable shaft, with a flange of the shaft located outside the housing and an internal annular volume residing between the bearing housing and the shaft, the annular volume bounded at one axial end by the flange. A seal resides in a recess in an outer surface of the housing, the seal including an outwardly extending resilient lip which engages the flange to close off the annular volume at the first axial end, adjacent the flange. The bearing housing includes a fluid passage which extends from an outer surface thereof to the annular volume, the passage including an innermost section oriented tangential to the annular volume. Purge fluid supplied to the annular volume via the external passage causes circumferential flow and substantially radially uniform purge fluid pressure within the annular volume.

  • Patent number: 5975534
Abstract: A sealing device designed to minimize accumulation of a fluid medium trapped therein to thereby increase a sealing performance and adapted to seal a space between inner and outer peripheral members rotatable relative to each other. The sealing device includes a generally L-sectioned annular sealing plate fitted to one of the inner and outer peripheral members and a generally L-sectioned annular sealing element fitted to the other of the inner and outer peripheral members so as to confront the sealing plate. The sealing plate has a radial wall and a tilted wall extending from the radial wall so as to incline inwardly thereof, and the sealing element includes a generally L-sectioned base plate provided with an elastic member. The elastic member has a side lip slidably engageable with the radial wall of the sealing plate and a radial lip slidingly engageable with a cylindrical sleeve of the sealing plate.

  • Patent number: 5887875
Abstract: A unitary axle seal (52) for use in an axle assembly of a motor vehicle to reduce the flow of contaminants from an exterior source (92) to an interior region (93) of the axle assembly is disclosed. The unitary axle seal (52) may be used in combination with unitized bearing seals (46) to reduce the exposure of contaminants to a bearing pack (44) contained within the axle assembly. The unitary axle seal combines a complex labyrinth (96) with an elastomeric seal (74) forming frictional sealing contacts (80,84,88) with the axle (10).

  • Patent number: RE36804
Abstract: There is provided a bearing sealing device capable of substantially completely preventing a leak of grease. A taper end portion of an axial extension of the bearing sealing device has an opposite surface and a rake face that forms a specified rake angle with the opposite surface. The opposite surface forms a narrow passage between the opposite surface and an outer peripheral surface of an inner ring. The narrow passage allows air to pass easily, but it allows grease to hardly pass therethrough. Further, the axial extension includes part of a core metal that extends axially and has its foremost end located axially inside an axial outermost end of the outer peripheral surface of the inner ring. Grease moving axially outwardly on the outer peripheral surface is moved along the rake face of the taper end portion and then guided along a cover portion of the bearing sealing device to an outer ring. The part of the core metal prevents the axial extension from being bent radially outwardly by a centrifugal force.
