  • Patent number: 9618116
Abstract: A piston assembly for a nailer is provided, and includes a piston body with an upper surface, a lower surface and a peripheral edge. A peripheral gland is located between the upper and lower surfaces, the gland having an inner closed end and defining an annular space. An annular piston seal is disposed in the gland, and a plurality of spaced air ports are disposed adjacent the peripheral edge, the ports each being in fluid communication with the gland. The gland and the seal are dimensioned so that during a power cycle of the nailer, pressurized air generated during a fastener driving stroke enters the ports and radially expands the seal for enhancing friction between the seal and a surrounding cylinder. During a return stroke, the seal is radially retracted within the gland to reduce friction between the seal and the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 9388870
Abstract: A device for retracting a piston for a brake caliper is disclosed. The device is suitable for actuating at least one pad for brake calipers of the type comprising a body arranged astride of a brake disc having a rotation axis and two opposite friction surfaces perpendicular to the rotation axis. The piston is suitable for axially translating, thus bringing each pad in contact with force against a respective friction surface of the disc, generating a braking friction torque that is opposite to the rotation direction of the disc. The piston is slidably actuated within a respective seat formed in the caliper body, biased by the pressure of a brake fluid supplied by a supplying plant, in a manner that is controlled by a user to carry out a braking action.

  • Publication number: 20080023918
Abstract: A seal system is provided for a reciprocating shuttle piston in a piston bore. An annular seal ring is fit to a piston ring groove in the piston. The seal ring is split along a cut extending entirely through a depth of the ring from a first side to a second side and entirely through a width of the ring from an outer peripheral seal face to an inner face. A fluid pressure differential across the seal results in a leak-by or metered flow of fluid across the seal, such as to equilibrate pressure across the piston. In one embodiment, the leak-by seal is fit to a groove in a shuttle piston of a pilot operated valve, the piston having a first face for opening and closing a main flow passage and a second face communicating with a pilot or backpressure passage. In one operation, the seal ring can bleed fluid from the second face for altering the pressure differential across the piston.

  • Patent number: 6173965
Abstract: A seal bearing assembly and method for a pneumatic actuator is provided for placement within a groove in an actuator piston. For maintaining a compact size of the piston, the piston preferably has only a single encircling piston groove. In accord with the present invention, a compressible seal and bearing ring are positioned adjacent each other within the single piston groove. The compressible seal ring and bearing ring are sized so that side-to-side movement is possible within the piston groove until the piston is inserted into the pneumatic actuator cylinder. Upon insertion of the piston, compression of the seal ring causes the diameter of the seal ring to expand within the piston groove thereby securing the seal bearing assembly into a fixed position that prevents side-to-side movement of the assembly. The bearing is preferably non-metallic and centralizes the piston within the actuator cylinder to prevent metal-to-metal contact, scoring, and resulting wear.

  • Patent number: 5988649
Abstract: A seal ring for placement in the space between a radial groove of a cylindrical member and a housing forming a bore in which the cylindrical member is movably positioned, which is free of scoring and has a fracture line through its thickness to form opposing faces. The faces are rough and mesh together such that when the faces are forced into contact, the faces are then interlocked. Furthermore, the seal ring has true roundness to enable the seal ring to seal the space despite presence of the fracture line. The seal ring is made up of a rigid polymer such as a polyimide, polyamide, polyester, polyetheretherketone, polyamideimide, polyetherimide, polyphenylene sulfide, and polybenzimidazole. The seal ring of the present invention is capable of single ring sealing of the space between the bore and the radial groove. The present invention also provides a device for fracturing the seal ring.
