Having Parallel Walls Patents (Class 277/454)
  • Patent number: 11085315
Abstract: An apparatus and method of sealing for an engine component between two surfaces arranged in spaced relationship to define a gap. A groove located is located in one of the two surface for receiving a seal having a body with a multi-faceted cross-sectional shape defining multiple seal facets. At least one of the multiple seal facets contacts one or both of the two surfaces.

  • Patent number: 10167954
Abstract: A piston ring (6) which is arranged with radial and axial play in an associated piston ring groove (5) in a piston (1) of a reciprocating internal combustion engine can be stabilized to prevent tilting on and contact with the radially outer edge of the piston ring groove (5) by the cross section of the piston ring (6) and/or the piston ring groove (5) being designed in such a manner that a gap is formed between the lower side of the piston ring (6) and the lower supporting surface of the associated piston ring groove (5), said gap opening vertically radially outwards in the radial direction and, when the piston ring (6) is not subjected to a load, remaining open to the outside irrespective of the temperature of the piston (1) for as long as the piston ring (6) is not loaded by pressure on the top side.

  • Patent number: 10047864
Abstract: A piston ring having a ring-shaped body with at least one internal wall surface configured to bear against the piston, an exterior wall surface, and at least a top wall surface extending from the exterior wall surface to the at least one internal wall surface and capable of intersecting a top surface of the piston to form an extended top surface of the piston when mounted on the piston. The top wall surface of the ring cooperates with the piston top surface to form a reservoir that collects liquid scraped off the cylinder wall, thereby reducing or eliminating blow-by of contaminants to the crankcase.

  • Patent number: 7188841
Abstract: A secondary seal is provided for an internal combustion engine having a piston, cylinder bore, ring seal, secondary seal, and leak path. Forces are applied from the combustion side of the piston through a cylinder gap and a leak path to the secondary seal. The secondary seal, seated on the piston and ring seal, transmits the forces generally axially to the piston and ring seal, thereby controllably limiting the radial force between the ring seal and cylinder bore.

  • Patent number: 6361050
Abstract: A piston is disclosed having both downwardly and upwardly inclined piston ring grooves, the grooves being angled less than approximately ten degrees with respect to a horizontally extending axis. In a preferred embodiment, the grooves are less than approximately three degrees in inclination and in a most preferred embodiment, the inclination is less than approximately one degree. The grooves for the combustion seal are angled upwardly from an outer diameter of the piston to adjust for thermal drooping of the piston rings received within the grooves. The grooves for the oil-control seal are angled downwardly so that oil is scraped downwardly, but the oil control ring hydroplanes over the oil when the piston moves upwardly.
