Having Installation, Removal, Assembly, Disassembly, Or Repair Feature Patents (Class 277/551)
  • Patent number: 7648144
Abstract: In a sealing device of the present invention, a support ring is fitted in an annular recessed part formed on the inner peripheral surface of a seal lip part independently of a reinforcement ring to support the seal lip part from the inner peripheral side, and the support ring is supported axially by a reinforcement ring via an interposed part. Thereby, when a rotating shaft is inserted into the seal ring, a contact area between a seal part and the rotating shaft can be made appropriate, and when a high pressure is applied to the seal lip part, an increase in contact area between the seal part and the rotating shaft can be suppressed within an appropriate range and the seal part becomes able to follow the eccentricity of the rotating shaft.

  • Patent number: 7090223
Abstract: A shaft sealing module is proposed for sealing a shaft which extends driving rotationally from a normal pressure chamber into a high vacuum chamber. It is essential for the shaft sealing module according to the invention that the dynamic seal of the shaft takes place not on the shaft itself but on a bushing mounted rotatably in a housing through which is guided a shaft and which is held on the shaft in friction connection, statically sealed, by elastic rings so that the bushing rotates with the shaft. The dynamic seal between the bushing and the housing is achieved by several radial shaft sealing rings which are preferably arranged so that between them is provided a prevacuum chamber with intermediate evacuation so that a two-stage dynamic seal is provided, where the prevacuum acts on the static seal between the bushing and the shaft in the sense of a gas penetration barrier towards the high vacuum chamber.

  • Patent number: 7080841
Abstract: A hub seal adapter has an outer diameter and thickness dimensioned to removably fit into the internal bore of a standard automotive hub in the same position that the grease seal would normally occupy, and be retained in the hub by the same snap ring as would be used to retain the seal in the hub. The adapter includes an internal bore into which a grease seal is press fit, the grease seal having a slightly smaller outside diameter than the standard seal. A snap ring retains the grease seal in the internal bore of the adapter. The adapter can be manually removed from the hub for cleaning and greasing of the hub bearings without damaging the seal, thereby allowing reuse of the seal.

  • Patent number: 7059608
Abstract: This invention relates to a seal cartridge comprising at least two back-to-back lip seals. A first, generally L-shaped sleeve is applied against the back wall of the seal ring such that its axially extending cylindrical surface retracts the lip portion of the outboard seal into a non-deployed position. A second, generally L-shaped sleeve is fitted up against the back of the first sleeve so as to place the lip end of the inboard seal in a similarly raised or retracted position. Upon installation of the seal ring about the shaft and in the shaft housing, the second, innermost sleeve is removed, such that the inboard lip seal is deployed against the surface of the shaft. Upon detection of leakage past the inboard seal, the first sleeve is retracted to thus deploy the remaining outboard lip seal.

Abstract: A lubricant seal assembly has an outer seal component and a separate inner wear sleeve. The outer seal component has a carrier and a PTFE seal element which lays down against the wear sleeve to provide a seal collar extending to an oil side of the seal assembly. The wear sleeve is formed on an air side of the assembly with an end flange, but is free of any such flanges on the oil side. The end flange has an axial portion extending into the seal component to define a labyrinth debris exclusion path. One or more elastomeric debris exclusion lips are formed on the carrier and are precisely positioned relative to the wear sleeve with the aid of an installation tool that engages end faces of the seal component and wear sleeve to press them into precise axial alignment relative to one another in repeatable fashion.

Abstract: A radial lip seal including an annular support with a radially extending portion having an inner periphery. An annular seal lip formed of elastomeric material such as polytetrafluoroethylene is connected to the inner periphery. The lip has an inner side adapted to seal a circumferential surface of a shaft and an outer side. The outer side of the lip has a plurality of grooves or protrusions to vary the diameter of the lip. The varied diameter creates a substantial leak between the outer side of the lip and the circumferential surface. The leak created is sufficient to be detected by a low-pressure air test.

Abstract: Advantageous seal systems (1500) are provided that include a barrier member movable relative (1504) to a shaft (1550) to allow sequential engagement of resilient seal members (1506), e.g., lip seals, with the shaft. Movement of the barrier member (1504) may be effected manually or through introduction of pressurized fluid to effect piston-like movement. The disclosed seal assemblies may include an automatic leak detector and may utilize such leak detection to effectuate automatic movement of the barrier member. The barrier member may be moved relative to the shaft while the shaft is in movement, e.g., rotating or reciprocating, thereby permitting seal maintenance without interruption in operation. As seal members are sequentially brought into sealing engagement with the shaft, the previously engaged seal members contribute to the sealing performance of the seal assembly, although no longer effective to establish a stand-alone seal with the shaft.
