    Abstract: A spindle protective structure in a spindle-through coolant feeder capable of preventing coolant form invading a spindle and a spindle motor for an excessive overflow of coolant. Coolant is supplied into a through hole formed axially in the spindle or a shaft connected to the spindle through a stationary member and a rotary member of a rotary joint supported by a housing. A seal member having elasticity is provided on a circumferential surface of the spindle or the shaft. Coolant which leaks through the seal member is splashed by a fringer provided in the housing. When a large amount of coolant is overflowed in the housing, a pressure of the coolant in a first chamber of the housing increases to press a lip of the seal member towards the circumferential surface of the spindle or the shaft to prevent leakage of coolant into a second chamber of the housing.

The primary seal member is mounted on the base seal member, is formed from an elastomer harder than the material in the primary seal member, and includes inner and outer seal ribs and a heel facing outwardly of the seal groove on the end of the base member away from the seal ribs. The base member has an axial length greater than its radial thickness. When the seal assembly is compressed between the two tubes the seal ribs of the two members provide low pressure and high pressure seals for confining hydraulic fluid in the chamber.

    Abstract: A rotary cartridge seal includes a cold flowable plastic ring having a body for sealably engaging a housing bore and a lip for sealably engaging a shaft rotating within the housing bore. The separable metal retainer includes a surface of revolution with a rear portion having a radius suitable for press fitting into the housing bore and a front portion of lesser radius ending the ring. An internal groove is provided in the body of the plastic ring for engaging the ring in order to latch the plastic ring and metal retainer together. A spring portion connecting the retainer rear portion and the ring is provided for controlling residual stress in a radial direction within the plastic ring and preventing shrinkage of the plastic ring toward the shaft.

Disposed within the cavity is a porous filter element in the preferred form of an open cell sponge. The various dust exclusion features cooperate to allow each to perform efficiently. The outermost second debris-exclusion seal guards the foam against substantial debris, and the foam in turn protects the first debris-exclusion lip against virtually all debris.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a leaktight seal with a lip capable of gripping a shaft end and being fitted behind a cap. When the cap is in place covering the shaft end and closing the housing, it presses on a stop flange of seal and pushes the lip outwards so that the rotation of the shaft end causes no wear on the seal. When the cap is removed, the housing remains open but the lip grips the shaft end and restores the leaktight seal. This fitting is of particular use for shaft ends fitted with a key slot used for manually rotating a rotating machine during the inspection phase of servicing, the shaft end being driven during normal use of the machine.

    Abstract: An annular wear sleeve for a shaft seal is fabricated of an elastically deformable metal material and includes an annular body portion and an end flange portion. The sleeve is slightly oversized relative to the shaft on which it is installed to provide a low force slip-fit installation on the shaft. Once installed, the end flange is elastically deformed, imparting a radially inward bending force on the body portion causing the inner surface of the wear sleeve to constrict about and engage the outer surface of the shaft, providing intimate metal-to-metal contact therebetween to dissipate heat from the seal member and to secure the wear sleeve against rotation on the shaft in service. Releasing the deformation force on the end flange enables the wear sleeve to recover its elastic deformation, causing the wear sleeve to release the constricting engagement with the shaft enabling it to be dismounted from the shaft with low force in the same manner as was required for installation.

    Abstract: When a seal (10) with a lip (10A) is slid onto a shaft (14), the seal (10) is first slid from a D-cut portion (14C) to the end of a shaft body (14B) contiguous to the D-cut portion (14C), and then is slid at a first speed (at 40 mm/s) from this end to a position in which the seal (10) does not come into contact with a large-diameter portion (14A) of the shaft (14). Since there is a strong possibility that the lip (10A) of the seal (10) will have been completely curled at this time, the seal (10) is pulled out at a second speed (at 10 mm/s) on the shaft body (14B) from this position toward the D-cut portion (14C), and the seal (10) is again slid inward at a third speed (at 70 mm/s) from this position to an appropriate position. Thus, the seal (10) is slid without the lip (10A) being curled. The sliding operations at the second and third speeds may be performed a plurality of times.
