  • Patent number: 7686308
Abstract: Systems and methods associated with a fluid-activated shaft seal are provided. The system includes a housing and a seal disposed relative to the housing. The method reduces flow of a fluid between the shaft and the housing. The method involves installing the housing in an opening relative to the shaft and locating the seal relative to the housing. The seal includes a gel material that expands when exposed to a fluid. The seal reduces flow of the fluid through a gap between the housing and the shaft. Advantages of the system and method include reduced wear to the seal due to friction because the seal does not engage the shaft in the absence of a fluid. The seal engages the shaft in the presence of a fluid. Sealing quality is improved by increasing the pressure differential acting on the gel material. In some embodiments, the seal includes a lip portion.

  • Patent number: 7614447
Abstract: A bi-directional metal seal is energized and un-energized by a rolling action that takes place between radiused seal lips. The seal forms an assembly with upper and lower energizing rings. The rings have external grooves for engaging hook ends on the inner surfaces of the seal lips in a nesting arrangement when the seal is in the un-energized position. When the upper ring is pulled upward, the seal is un-energized and does not contact the adjacent conductors or wellhead members. When the upper ring is forced downward, the hooks ends of the seal are forced out of the grooves causing the seal lips to roll around in a radial outward direction, rather than stretch, and expand against the seal's outer diameter. This energizing process also causes the seal to become smaller on the seal's inner diameter, and thus forms a pressure-assist, metal-to-metal seal with the adjacent conductors.

  • Patent number: 6209882
Abstract: A lip seal for sealing cylindrical surfaces of a cylindrical housing and a axially movable piston within the housing includes an annularly arranged supporting bead on its outer diameter to improve its tilting behavior around a central axis running annularly through the center of the lip seal. A first sealing lip of the lip seal forms a seal on the cylindrical surface of the housing and a second sealing lip forms a seal on the cylindrical surface of the piston. The supporting bead, in the installed state, forms a contact seal in the cylindrical part of the housing. Together with the contact seals of the first sealing lip and the second sealing lip, the supporting bead lends stability against tilting to the lip seal. Advantageously, a good sealing quality of the lip seal is maintained during an increased number of load changes.

  • Patent number: 6196552
Abstract: A seal assembly especially suitable for use as the sealing element in the annular cylindrical bore of a concentric cylinder assembly. The seal assembly includes an annular insert structure of rigid material and an annular seal member of elastomeric material bonded to the insert structure. The annular insert structure has an I-beam cross-sectional configuration including an outer annular flange structure centered on an axis, an inner annular flange structure centered on the axis concentrically within the outer annular flange structure, and annular web structure extending radially between the inner and outer annular flange structures. The web structure coacts with the flange structures to define left and right continuous annular grooves in the left and right faces of the insert structure and defines a plurality of circumferentially spaced holes extending axially through the web structure between the left and right grooves.

  • Patent number: 6179297
Abstract: A seal that is particularly suitable for use in a gas spring (and other high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic sealing applications) and that minimizes leakage of relatively high pressure gas and lubricating oil from the rod end of the gas spring. The generally annular seal body includes a radially inwardly facing surface, force directing lobes and either a plastic wiper insert or a wiper lobe that are designed for minimizing the leakage of oil between the radially inwardly facing surface of the seal body and the adjacent, radially outwardly facing surface of the gas spring's piston rod, and that include a corner edge that projects radially inwardly beyond the plane of the seal body's radially inwardly facing surface. When the seal body is compressed for use in a gas spring and is thus subjected to the high-pressure gas, the induced stresses in the seal body result in the corner edge being forced against the adjacent surface of the piston rod to effectively prevent the leaking of oil therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6139290
Abstract: Methods of sealing a planetary rotor engine, and the resulting seals, are described which improve the engine's efficiency and solves each of three main problem areas. A first method and resulting dynamic seal for sealing the rotor face surfaces as they translate across one another to constantly reform the contact between each other includes the key step of moving the shaft centerlines of each of the rotors, thereby radially positioning the rotors along diametric axes at positions which compensate for varying thermodynamic conditions (e.g. thermal expansion or contraction of rotor materials). A second method and resulting dynamic seal for effectively minimizing leakage between the end space formed between the rotor end and the case includes the key step of introducing a surface depression of any shape on one, or both, of the rotor end and opposing casing, thereby eliminating the need for a frictional seal and, in essence, forming a pressure wave plug.

Abstract: A seal that is particularly suitable for use in a gas spring and other high pressure hydraulic and pneumatic sealing applications and that minimizes the leakage of relatively high pressure gas and lubricating oil from the rod end of the gas spring or other application. The generally annular seal body includes a number of convex sealing lobes on its radially inwardly and outwardly facing surfaces.
