The soft metal stopper is preferably formed of copper, although other soft metals capable of withstanding high temperatures may be employed. The stopper is formed of a malleable metal ring, and is formed over and about the edge of a combustion aperture edge of the gasket via a forming die that both shapes and clinches the metal ring respectively about and to the circumferential edge of each combustion aperture. The stopper, applied to the center spacer layer of the gasket, is adapted to flow into crevices and to thus “conform” to the normally variable spacing between engine block and cylinder head.

Because the stopper ring is spaced from the beaded outer layers, the stresses imposed on the wire ring are decoupled from the beaded outer layers, and lower incidences of bead cracking are realized. A combustion-sealing member formed with tabs extending outwardly from the circumference of the sealing member is received into each cylinder opening and orientated with each tab residing in a channel. Each tab is embossed at its distal end and eyeletted with an eyelet to the top and bottom layers. Tabs retain the sealing member in the cylinder opening, positively locate the sealing member over the cylinder bores on the engine block during installation and permit the sealing member to float in the cylinder bore during operation of the engine independently of the spacer layer.

The metal plate includes a plurality of first holes corresponding to cylinder bores, at least one second hole corresponding to another hole, and a side portion around the second hole. The sealing device is disposed on the metal plate outside the side portion relative to the second hole, and surrounds the second hole for sealing the same. The thin support portion is located inside the sealing device and is disposed on a part of the side portion around the second hole without extending the entire side portion. The support portion supports a part of a pressure applied thereto to securely seal around the second hole.

The stop members are secured to the core by engagement with the notches. When secured in this manner, the portion of each stop member defining the fastener hole is offset laterally from the core. An elastomeric envelope having elastomeric beads is applied over the core and a portion of each stop member, so that the beads extend continuously around the length of the assembly.

    Abstract: A metal laminate gasket of the invention is used for an internal combustion engine having a sealing hole and a plurality of bolt holes situated around the sealing hole. The gasket is formed of first and second metal plates having holes corresponding to the sealing hole and the bolt holes of the engine. The second metal plate includes a base portion, a curved portion extending from the base portion to define one hole therein and located inside one hole in the first plate, and a flange extending from the curved portion and disposed over the first plate. The flange has a plurality of wide flange portions and narrow flange portions alternately arranged to each other such that the wide flange portions are located near the bolt holes to support high tightening pressures applied thereto. A bead may be formed on one or both of the first and second plates outside the flange. The bead may have wide and narrow portions to provide equal surface pressures as a whole.
