  • Patent number: 7497443
Abstract: A resilient, flexible, pressure-activated, high-temperature seal is adapted to be interposed between high and low pressure regions to provide sealing between opposing surfaces of adjacent relatively movable structures. The seal comprises at least one C-shaped sheet element. The C-shaped element design enables the seal to be pressure-activated to provide a radially outward biasing force, responsive to a seal-activating pressure differential acting across the seal thereby increasing resiliency. A centrally-located, resilient core structure provides load bearing and insulating properties. In an exemplary embodiment where at least two seal elements are used, each layer has a cutout slot pattern and the remaining strip material pattern. The slots provide flexibility to the seal, enabling the seal to be manually contoured to seal around corners and curves. The strip material of each layer covers the slots in each adjacent layer to minimize leakage through the slots.

  • Patent number: 7367567
Abstract: A seal for an exhaust duct includes a metal mesh member sandwiched between an outer plate and an inner plate. The seal includes a plurality of flexible members defined by a plurality of slots in both the inner and outer plates. The flexible members provide for expansion and contraction along with creating flexibility in the region of contact between the seal land and the seal. The metal mesh member substantially eliminates gaps and leak paths created through the slots. The metal mesh member is composed of a plurality of interwoven wire strands impregnated with a high temperature elastomeric sealant. The impregnation of high temperature elastomeric sealant over the metal mesh member improves sealing while maintaining the desired flexibility of the seal.

Abstract: The present invention discloses redundant sealing systems for composite risers having metal liner assemblies and methods of preventing interior fluid leakage to the outside of composite risers. An elastomeric seal is formed between an elastomeric tip provided on the end of a metal to composite interface (MCI) of the liner assembly and an elastomeric shear ply provided over the liner assembly. The elastomeric seal and a mechanical seal between the MCI and a transition ring which secures the liner to the MCI, provides a dual sealing system for the composite riser to prevent leakage of interior fluids. • Patent number: 6764081
Abstract: In a gas turbine, a supplemental seal is provided between an annular axially facing sealing surface of a nozzle support ring and an annular axially opposed sealing surface formed by circumferentially adjacent nozzle segments. Each segment carries an inner rail mounting a chordal hinge seal which engages the sealing surface of the nozzle support ring. That seal is supplemented by a generally arcuate V-shaped seal between the sealing surfaces which opens radially inwardly toward a high pressure leakage path past the chordal hinge seal. The supplemental seal is initially compressed and maintained in a compressed condition during installation by application of a solder. At operating temperature, the solder melts away, releasing the supplemental seal to seal between the nozzle support ring and nozzle segments.

Abstract: The present invention involves a low permeation sealing member for reducing permeation of hydrocarbons from a vessel. The low permeation sealing member comprises an elongated body having a contact surface and a low permeation barrier layer attached along the contact surface of the elongated body. The low permeation barrier layer has opposite edges spaced apart to define a slot. The low permeation barrier layer partially covers the elongated body to allow the elongated body to expand through the slot. The low permeation barrier layer has an outer side configured for contacting hydrocarbons from the vessel to reduce permeation of the hydrocarbons therefrom.

  • Patent number: 6702296
Abstract: A gasket with selectively positioned seal enhancement zones located in the web of the gasket is provided. The gasket is formed of a base sheet of gasket material cut to define an interior aperture bounded by an interior edge and webs. Slots are formed at selected locations within the seal enhancement zones and the slots are bounded by edges. An edge coating of polymeric material is applied to the slot edges and, in one embodiment, project beyond the facial planes of the base sheet to form raised rims. An edge coating also may be formed on the interior edge bounding the aperture of the gasket. When clamped between a pair of flange surfaces, the polymeric edge coatings on the slot edges engage and seal against the flange surfaces within the seal enhancement zones to provide an enhanced seal against leakage in these zones.

  • Patent number: 6702553
Abstract: A highly porous alumina material and a method for applying such material that is useful in the hot section of a jet aircraft engine. In order to manufacture the porous alumina, an aluminum-based metal/alumina material known in the art is first placed onto a metal alloy substrate. The aluminum-based metal is then dissolved using a solution that will not affect the alumina or the underlying substrate. The alumina is then washed with deionized water and dried. The resulting alumina has a porosity in the range of about 20% to about 45%. The alumina has globular interconnected surface features in the range of about 0.5 &mgr;m to about 20 &mgr;m.

Abstract: The invention disclosed and the specifications includes a gasket material. The gasket material is thin and has a sheet of PTFE at its core. The PFTE core or sheet is bonded on both sides by a thin layer of pliable tacky polyurethane mix. Applicants also disclose a method of manufacturing the novel gasket material by laying it on a flat top table and pouring the polyurethane mix first on one side, allowing it cure, and then it turning it over and pouring it on the other side of the PTFE sheet. Finally, a method of using the novel gasket material in repairing and refurbishing aircraft is disclosed, the method including the steps of placing the PTFE material between adjacent panels of an aircraft skin and affixing the panels together under compression.

  • Patent number: 6659472
Abstract: In a gas turbine including a nozzle retaining ring having a first annular axially sealing surface and a shroud segment having an axial registering second surface. To minimize or prevent leakage flow between the retaining ring and shroud segments, a generally U-shaped seal having reversely folded U-shaped marginal portions is received in a cavity formed in the second surface. At operating conditions, the marginal portions seal against the base of the cavity and the first surface of the retaining ring to prevent leakage flow past the retaining ring/shroud segment interface. To install the seal, the seal body is first compressed and maintained in a compressed state by applying one or more wraps about the seal body and an epoxy is used to secure the seal when compressed in the cavity. At operating temperatures, the retention means releases the seal to engage marginal portions against opposite sealing surfaces of the shroud segments and retaining ring.

  • Patent number: 6626439
Abstract: An edge coated gasket includes a base sheet made of compressible gasket material and having opposed faces and an interior edge surrounding and defining an aperture. An edge coating of polymer or other material is disposed on and seals the interior edge of the base sheet and may project beyond the facial planes of the base sheet to define protruding rims extending around the aperture. Face coatings may also be applied to one or more of the faces extending in relatively narrow strips around the aperture of the base sheet. When clamped between flange surfaces, the edge coating engages, conforms to, and seals against the flange surfaces to provide a seal against both interfacial and intersticial migration of fluid past the gasket. At the same time, the inherently good compression failure resistance of the compressible gasket material of the base sheet is preserved. Thus, a gasket with enhanced sealability and compression failure resistance is provided.
