  • Patent number: 6921092
Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body centered on and adapt d to be rotated about a longitudinal axis and unitarily formed with a plurality of forwardly open angled guides angularly spaced about the axis and with a rim, respective jaws displaceable along the guides in the chuck body and each formed with a row of teeth, and a tightening sleeve rotatably surrounding the body. A threaded ring rotatable on the body about the axis within the tightening sleeve is fixed to the sleeve and formed with a screwthread meshing with the teeth of the jaws so that rotation of the ring in one direction moves the jaws radially together and opposite rotation moves them radially apart. This threaded ring is formed with a radially outwardly open groove covered by the sleeve. In addition the tightening sleeve has an inwardly projecting welt engaged in the groove.

  • Patent number: 6848691
Abstract: A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver that may also be used for hammer drilling. The chuck is constructed so that during normal operation for its intended purpose, the jaws holding a shaft for a tool do not loosen. The chuck includes at least one pawl to engage teeth on a gear ring such that rotation of a ring driver in a jaw gripping direction causes the gear ring to rotate. When the jaws tightly grip the shaft, the gear ring will frictionally engage a portion of the chuck so that the gear ring is rotationally locked to the chuck body. At the same time, the pawl engages the gear ring such that rotation of the ring driver and thus movement of the jaws in a non-jaw gripping direction is prevented during normal use of the hammerlock chuck.

  • Patent number: 6669207
Abstract: A chuck for a manual or powered driver having a rotatable driveshaft includes a body having a front section and a rear section. A plurality of jaws are operatively associated with the body, and the jaws are adapted to engage a tool to be utilized by the driver. The body's rear section includes serrations extending outwardly therefrom. A sleeve member is pressed onto the serrations whereby the serrations dig into the sleeve to at least assist in rotationally securing the sleeve to the body.

Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body and a plurality of jaws reciprocally disposed in the body in communication with a central bore in the body. A first detent extends radially into the central bore and is releasable in a radially outward direction. Upon insertion of an elongated tool shaft having a polygonal cross section into the bore so that a groove in the tool shaft is aligned with the first detent, the first detent engages the groove and axially retains the tool shaft. Upon movement of the jaws so that the jaw faces engage flat sides of the tool shaft, the jaws rotationally retain the tool shaft.

  • Publication number: 20030178795
Abstract: A chuck that can be operated with or without a key, depending upon the amount of torque desired. The jaws are controlled by rotation of a screw ring about the axis of the chuck body that slides the jaws along jaw passages by engagement with teeth on the jaw surfaces. The screw ring is housed in a tightening knob that has a planar ring gear perpendicular to the chuck body axis. A tail section is rigidly attached to the chuck body below the tightening knob and houses a pinion gear that matingly engages the planar ring gear and rotates in concert with the tightening knob. Insertion of a hex key into a recess in the pinion gear allows the application of additional torque. Alternate embodiments incorporate a idler gear to reverse pinion gear rotation; locate the pinion gear in the tightening knob with the planar ring gear in the tail section; and utilize a planar ring gear on both the tail section and the tightening knob with a floating ring to house the pinion gear between the planar ring gears.

Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body member having a forward section and a rearward section. The rearward section is configured to mate with a manual or powered driver. A plurality of angularly disposed passageways is formed in the forward section of the body and intersect an axial bore formed therein. The body defines a ledge portion about its outer circumference and a front face transverse to the longitudinal body axis. One of a plurality of jaws is slidably positioned in each passageway. A nut is rotatably mounted to the body rearward of the ledge portion so as to engage the jaws. A generally cylindrical sleeve engages the nut and includes a flexible protrusion extending axially rearward from an inner circumferential surface of the sleeve proximate the sleeve forward end. The protrusion has a tab portion disposed rearward of the ledge portion and projecting radially inward of the outer circumference of the ledge portion to prevent forward axial movement of the sleeve with respect to the body.
