Conical Sleeve Patents (Class 279/62)
  • Patent number: 5741016
Abstract: Chuck for use with manual or powered driver having rotatable shaft, the chuck including a body member and jaws slidably positioned in angled passageways formed in the body. The chuck further includes a nut rotatably mounted relative to the body member and in engagement with threads on the jaws. A generally cylindrical sleeve member is disposed in driving engagement with the nut and overlying the nose section of the body so that when the sleeve member is rotated with respect to the body, the jaws will be moved thereby to grip the shank of a tool. A pawl member is biased to engage the sleeve member and is disposed selectively rotatably with respect to the body member. When the nut is tightened, the pawl member can be disposed to become nonrotatable with respect to the body member and restrains the nut from loosening during vibration of the chuck in use for its intended purpose.

  • Patent number: 5732956
Abstract: A non-impact keyless chuck suitable for use with manual or powered drivers is disclosed. The chuck comprises a body which carries a rotatable split nut having a relatively fine thread and a plurality of slidable jaws, which may be identical, driven by the rotatable nut. An anti-friction bearing is disposed between the rotatable nut and a bearing thrust ring mounted on the body. A clutch or torque limiting mechanism is provided to limit the tightening torque to a predetermined value while the loosening torque may be limited or unlimited. The front sleeve, and rear sleeve, if used, may be formed from a structural plastic to reduce manufacturing costs. A relatively soft elastomeric grip boot may be placed on the front sleeve to improve the grip and temporarily restrain and center the tool during chuck tightening or loosening operations. A relatively soft elastomeric grip boot may also be placed on the rear sleeve, if used.

  • Patent number: 5186478
Abstract: A chuck includes a body mounted on the motor shaft of a machine. A plurality of jaws is mounted to slide in bores and converge forward. A sleeve surrounds the body and is mounted to pivot around the latter. The jaws have an outer threaded part which meshes with a nut surrounding the jaws and integral with the sleeve surrounding the body. A series of balls is interposed between the face of the nut which faces rearward and the body of the chuck. The balls abut a ring made of a hard material, and that ring in turn abuts a ring made of synthetic material which exhibits shock-absorbent characteristics and is locked against the body.

Abstract: A chuck for use in a percussion drill or the like has a unit for securing the chuck jaws against unintentional loosening during operation. The securing unit moves from an unlocked position in which a tool can be received by the chuck jaws to a locked position automatically for drilling operations without the use of a key. The securing unit includes a first surface (22) upon which a sliding member (21) is slidable to be received in a recess (26) during the shaking caused by drilling, so that coupling members (15, 19) between a securing sleeve (17) and a clamping sleeve (13) engage with one another.

  • Patent number: 5172923
Abstract: A tool chuck has a plurality of inclined chuck claws mounted centrally of a forward end of a chuck body to be slidable toward and away from one another, a nut ring meshed with the chuck claws and rotatable to screw-feed the chuck claws toward and away from one another, and a torque amplifying mechanism interposed between the nut ring and a control ring fitted to an outer peripheral surface of the chuck body, whereby the control ring is turned directly by hand to cause the chuck claws to hold a tool. A torque limiter is incorporated into the torque amplifying mechanism for allowing the tool to be clamped by a force not exceeding a predetermined value. Excessive tightening of the tool is thereby avoided so that the tool is removable when desired, and at the same time the above torque limiter is formed compact.

  • Patent number: 5171030
Abstract: A self-tightening drill chuck adapted to be mounted on a drill spindle for rotation about and reciprocation along the axis of the spindle has a guide body rotatable on the spindle about the axis and formed with a plurality of jaw guides inclined relative to the axis and spaced angularly thereabout and formations axially fixing the guide body on the spindle against substantial relative axial displacement. Respective jaws displaceable in the guides are formed with radially directed teeth meshing with a screwthread of an adjustment body fixed on the spindle against rotation thereon so that rotation of the adjustment body relative to the guide body in one direction displaces the jaws radially toward one another and opposite rotation displaces the jaws radially apart. Further formations secure the adjustment body on the spindle for limited relative axial displacement substantially greater than the relative axial displacement possible between the guide body and the spindle.

  • Patent number: 5145192
Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body centered on and adapted to be rotated about a longitudinal axis and unitarily formed with a plurality of forwardly open angled guides angularly spaced about the axis and an axially forwardly directed shoulder. Respective jaws displaceable along the guides in the chuck body are each formed with a row of teeth and a tightening sleeve rotatably surrounds the body and has an axially rearwardly directed shoulder. An inner ring rotatable on the body about the axis is formed internally with a screwthread meshing with the teeth of the jaws so that rotation of the inner ring in one direction moves the jaws radially together and opposite rotation moves them radially apart. This inner ring bears axially forward on the shoulder of the sleeve and axially backward on the shoulder of the body. Interengaging formations rotationally couple the inner ring to the sleeve and a retaining element axially fixed on the chuck body forward of the inner ring bears axially backward on the sleeve.

A tightening ring is mounted rotatable and axially nonslidable on the chuck body and is provided with a tightening thread for moving the clamp jaws which is engaged with a row of teeth on each of the clamp jaws. An opening for connection of a drill spindle is located in the tightening ring. As seen in a direction running from the drill spindle to the clamp jaws, the tightening thread has a direction of rotation, by which the clamp jaws are moved toward the drill tool or tighten on the drill tool in clockwise rotation of the tightening ring on the chuck body. Thus the drill chuck has aftertightening and selftightening properties.

Abstract: An axially movable sleeve has interference members or lugs engageable with interference members or lugs associated with the split nut in a chuck. When the chuck is driven by the spindle, the axially movable interference members engage the split nut interference members and are restrained from rotation. The nut is also restrained and the chuck jaws open or close depending upon the direction of rotation of the chuck body. The sleeve is positioned to be engaged by the jaws as they approach full open position. The jaws then move the sleeve axially to disengage the interference members and stop further opening of the jaws before they reach a position to wedge or jam in the open position.
