Publication number: 20030107190Abstract: A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver that may also be used for hammer drilling. The chuck is constructed so that during normal operation for its intended purpose, the jaws holding a shaft for a tool do not loosen. The chuck includes at least one pawl to engage teeth on a gear ring such that rotation of a ring driver in a jaw gripping direction causes the gear ring to rotate. When the jaws tightly grip the shaft, the gear ring will frictionally engage a portion of the chuck so that the gear ring is rotationally locked to the chuck body. At the same time, the pawl engages the gear ring such that rotation of the ring driver and thus movement of the jaws in a non-jaw gripping direction is prevented during normal use of the hammerlock chuck.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 3, 2002Publication date: June 12, 2003Inventors: Guimo Yang, Xingda Tan

Patent number: 6575478Abstract: A chuck body is formed with angled guides holding respective jaws. A tightening ring rotatable about the axis on the chuck body has a screwthread meshing with toothed edges of the jaws so that rotation of the ring in one direction moves the jaws axially forward and radially together and opposite rotation moves the jaws axially rearward and radially apart. A spring washer is rotatable about the axis on the body between the tightening ring and the rear jaw faces. Rearwardly directed jaw faces axially rearwardly engage and press the washer toward the tightening ring and coupling formations on the washer and ring angularly lock the washer to the ring when the washer is pressed axially rearward by the faces. Stops on the washer can engage the jaws for permitting only limited relative angular movement of the washer and jaws when the faces are pressed axially rearward against the washer.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2002Date of Patent: June 10, 2003Assignee: Rohm GmbHInventors: Günter Horst Röhm, Hans-Dieter Mack

Publication number: 20030080521Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body rotatable about a chuck axis and having a rear end adapted to fit with a drive spindle and a front end formed with a tool recess. A plurality of jaws angularly spaced on the body about the axis and exposed in the tool recess are radially displaceable relative to the body between inner and outer positions. A tightening ring is axially fixed but rotatable about the axis on the body. Screwthread formations between the tightening ring and the jaws can move the jaws radially together and radially apart. A tightening sleeve surrounding the body and connected to the tightening ring is adapted to be gripped by hand to rotate the ring in the directions. A shield sleeve surrounds the body between the tightening sleeve and the body front end and is supported on the body for rotation thereon about the axis independently of the body and of the tightening sleeve.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 9, 2002Publication date: May 1, 2003Applicant: ROHM GmbHInventor: Hans-Dieter Mack

Publication number: 20010042965Abstract: A tool driver includes a housing and a rotatable drive shaft extending therefrom. A chuck for holding the tool includes a generally cylindrical body having a nose section and a tail section. Each of a plurality of jaws is slidably positioned in one of a plurality of angularly disposed passageways in the body. Each jaw has a jaw face and threads formed thereon. A nut is in operative communication with the drive shall so that the drive shaft rotationally drives the nut. Patent number: 6311988Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body member having a forward section and a rearward section. The rearward section is configured to mate with a manual or powered driver. A plurality of angularly disposed passageways is formed in the forward section of the body and intersect an axial bore formed therein. The body defines a ledge portion about its outer circumference and a front face transverse to the longitudinal body axis. One of a plurality of jaws is slidably positioned in each passageway. A nut is rotatably mounted to the body rearward of the ledge portion so as to engage the jaws. A generally cylindrical sleeve engages the nut and includes a flexible protrusion extending axially rearward from an inner circumferential surface of the sleeve proximate the sleeve forward end. The protrusion has a tab portion disposed rearward of the ledge portion and projecting radially inward of the outer circumference of the ledge portion to prevent forward axial movement of the sleeve with respect to the body.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2000Date of Patent: November 6, 2001Assignee: Power Tool Holders IncorporatedInventor: Larry Wilson

Patent number: 6260856Abstract: A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft includes a pawl having a deflectable burr biased toward a catch in a chuck driver. A chuck sleeve defines a cam surface disposed with respect to the catch and the burr so that the cam surface disengages the burr from the catch when the sleeve is in a first position with respect to the driver and releases the burr to engage the catch, and rotationally fix the pawl to the driver, when the sleeve is in a second position with respect to the driver. The pawl is rotationally fixed to the chuck body when the sleeve is in the second position.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: Power Tool Holders IncorporatedInventor: Richard E. Patent number: 6260857Abstract: A quick-change chuck for a tool bit mounted to a drive shaft. The chuck includes a spindle with a tool end and a hub end where a bore extends into the hub end from a forward face. The bore has an inner end for receiving a tool bit. A sleeve is disposed around and rotatably connected to the hub end. The sleeve has a spindle side wall and an outer side wall. An air gap exists between the sleeve and the thrust washer on the spindle. Adjustable jaws protrude through the spindle into the bore at an acute angle and define an opening between the jaws. The jaws threadably engage the sleeve so that rotating the sleeve about the hub causes the adjustable jaws to move axially between an open position and a closed position. The open position occurs when the jaws are retracted from the bore and the closed position occurs when the jaws are extended into the bore. An bias member urges the jaws towards a closed position, and maintains the air gap between the thrust washer and the sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2000Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Inventors: Thomas J.
