  • Publication number: 20030178795
Abstract: A chuck that can be operated with or without a key, depending upon the amount of torque desired. The jaws are controlled by rotation of a screw ring about the axis of the chuck body that slides the jaws along jaw passages by engagement with teeth on the jaw surfaces. The screw ring is housed in a tightening knob that has a planar ring gear perpendicular to the chuck body axis. A tail section is rigidly attached to the chuck body below the tightening knob and houses a pinion gear that matingly engages the planar ring gear and rotates in concert with the tightening knob. Insertion of a hex key into a recess in the pinion gear allows the application of additional torque. Alternate embodiments incorporate a idler gear to reverse pinion gear rotation; locate the pinion gear in the tightening knob with the planar ring gear in the tail section; and utilize a planar ring gear on both the tail section and the tightening knob with a floating ring to house the pinion gear between the planar ring gears.

  • Patent number: 6616147
Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body member having a forward section and a rearward section. The rearward section is configured to mate with a manual or powered driver. A plurality of angularly disposed passageways is formed in the forward section of the body and intersect an axial bore formed therein. The body defines a ledge portion about its outer circumference and a front face transverse to the longitudinal body axis. One of a plurality of jaws is slidably positioned in each passageway. A nut is rotatably mounted to the body rearward of the ledge portion so as to engage the jaws. A generally cylindrical sleeve engages the nut and includes a flexible protrusion extending axially rearward from an inner circumferential surface of the sleeve proximate the sleeve forward end. The protrusion has a tab portion disposed rearward of the ledge portion and projecting radially inward of the outer circumference of the ledge portion to prevent forward axial movement of the sleeve with respect to the body.

The sleeve engages the body or the jaws by a first set of interengaged threads so that relative rotation between the first threads drives the jaws toward or away from the chuck axis. The sleeve engages the body or the jaws by a second set of interengaged threads so that relative rotation between the second threads drives the jaws toward or away from the chuck axis. The first thread set defines a first pitch so that when the jaws close, the first threads rotationally lock in the closing direction. The second thread set defines a second pitch that is higher than the first pitch so that when the jaws close, the second threads are relatively rotatable in the closing direction.

Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body rotatable about a chuck axis and formed centered on the axis with an axially forwardly open tool receiving hole, an array of axially extending guides opening axially forward into the hole, a rear axially forwardly directed shoulder and a front axially forwardly directed shoulder. Respective externally toothed jaws axially displaceable in the guides mesh with an internally threaded actuating ring rotatable on the chuck body about the axis to axially displace the jaws in the respective guides. An elastically deformable support washer bears axially forward on the actuating ring and has an inner periphery bearing axially backward on the rear chuck-body shoulder. The washer bears on the rear chuck-body shoulder over a radial distance equal to at most one-half its radial dimension such that the support ring projects at least halfway from the chuck body.

Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body having a nose section and a tail section. The tail section is adapted to rotate with the drive shaft, and the nose section has an axial bore formed therein. A driver is axially movably disposed about the body. A generally cylindrical sleeve is rotatably mounted about the body. A grip is mounted in the body in communication with the axial bore and in operative communication with the driver. The driver is in communication with the sleeve and the body so that, in a first state of the chuck, rotation of the sleeve with respect to the body in a closing direction moves the grip toward the axis of the axial bore and so that, in a second state of the chuck, the driver is axially reciprocal with respect to the sleeve and the body.
