  • Patent number: 8777231
Abstract: A chuck for use with a driver having a rotatable drive shaft, the chuck including a body having a nose section and a tail section, the tail section being configured to rotate with the drive shaft and the nose section having an axial bore. A plurality of jaws is movably disposed with respect to the body and in communication with the axial bore. A first sleeve is rotatably mounted to the body in operative communication with the jaws so that rotation of the sleeve moves the jaws either toward a longitudinal center axis of the axial bore or away from the longitudinal center axis. A second sleeve is rotatably mounted to the body and is movable between a first position in which the second sleeve is rotatably fixed to the body and a second position in which the second sleeve is rotatable about the body. The second sleeve moves in a direction transverse to the longitudinal center axis of the axial bore when moving between the first position and the second position.

Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body centered on and rotatable about an axis, a jaw holder rotatable on the body and formed with a plurality of angularly spaced guides, a sleeve surrounding the holder and body, and jaws in the guides between the sleeve and the body. Interengaging first and second stops on the body engage the sleeve and limit relative angular movement of the sleeve on the body between respective angularly offset first and second end positions. An annular array of teeth rotationally fixed to the chuck body engages first and second pawl angularly fixed on the holder. The pawls and the array of teeth are oriented such that each pawl locks in one direction and ratchets in the other, with the pawls working oppositely. Respective first and second springs urge the first and second pawls into the locking positions.

Abstract: A keyless chuck having both an automatic locking feature and a manual locking feature. The automatic locking feature provides for automatic locking of the chuck in a tightened state when a predetermined tightening torque has been exceeded. The chuck can be utilized with only the automatic locking feature engaged. If desired, a manual locking feature can also be engaged wherein rotation of the outer sleeve relative to the body is prevented. A retaining feature can be employed to inhibit the movement of the manual locking feature between a locked and unlocked position. The retaining feature thereby avoids accidental engaging or disengaging of the manual locking feature.
