Patent number: 5752302Abstract: A slashing process for preparing warp yarns for weaving operations including the steps of sizing and/or desizing the yarns in an acoustic resonance box and separating the yarns with a leasing apparatus comprised of a set of acoustically agitated lease rods. The sizing step includes immersing the yarns in a size solution contained in an acoustic resonance box. Acoustic transducers are positioned against the exterior of the box for generating an acoustic pressure field within the size solution. Ultrasonic waves that result from the acoustic pressure field continuously agitate the size solution to effect greater mixing and more uniform application and penetration of the size onto the yarns. The sized yarns are then separated by passing the warp yarns over and under lease rods. Electroacoustic transducers generate acoustic waves along the longitudinal axis of the lease rods, creating a shearing motion on the surface of the rods for splitting the yarns.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1997Date of Patent: May 19, 1998Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Shuh-Haw Sheen, Hual-Te Chien, Apostolos C. Patent number: 5177840Abstract: Hybrid yarn is produced from thermoplastic and reinforcing fibers by spreading the fibers separately to form a band and combining and homogeneously intermixing the two bands on rolls or rods. The spreading is carried out in such a way that the reinforcing fiber band will be from 20 to 100% wider than the thermoplastic fiber band. The hybrid yarn can be sized and processed into fabrics which can be molded to produce fiber composites.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: BASF AktiengesellschaftInventor: Regina Laws

Patent number: 4794679Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for simultaneous sizing and drying a complete number of warps of filament yarns required for weaving of cloth. During sizing, a warp sheet having high yarn density is put to uniform arrangement state using a first slant reed and a guide roller, and the warp sheet in the uniform arrangement state passes through a sizing solution and is squeezed at high pressure. The sized yarns are separated using dividing rods and a second upright reed before preparatory drying, and separated using a third upright reed and dividing rods after the preparatory drying, thereby the sized yarns in separated state in vertical and lateral directions pass through hot air during the preparatory drying. Yarns separated after the preparatory drying are put to uniform arrangement state using a fourth slant reed and a guide roller, and the yarns in the uniform arrangement state are laid over heating cylinders during finishing drying.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1987Date of Patent: January 3, 1989Assignee: Kawamoto Industrial Co., Ltd.Inventor: Toshitsuyo Hiraki

Patent number: 4571792Abstract: The ends of warp yarns in a sheet form are treated at the end of a sizing process in preparation for a subsequent rewinding process. In the sizing process, the warp yarns are threaded through a reed with at least two warp yarns in each reed dent in vertically spaced relation. The at least two warp yarns are threaded through one dent in a reed in the rewinding process. Heretofore, it has been tedious and time-consuming to thread the warp yarns through the reeds since the warp yarns in one reed dent cannot be distinguished from those in other reed dents in the sizing process. In the rewinding process, a spacer such as a rod is inserted between vertically divided sheets of the warp yarns to prevent snarling. Since the warp yarns cannot be distinguished from reed dent to reed dent, it has been difficult to insert the spacer.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1984Date of Patent: February 25, 1986Assignee: Tsudakoma Corp.Inventor: Tokuji Komatsu

Patent number: 4513485Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for use in the process of treating yarns which includes passing the yarns through a slashing machine (10) and applying a sizing solution to the yarns (20) arranged in side-by-side sheet form, (W), in preparation for weaving on a loom followed by drying the yarns, wherein the apparatus comprises a lease rod (A) for splitting yarns into sheets which includes a porous outer layer (32) and yarn contacting surface (34) having a capacity to sweat a liquid lubricant at a sufficiently precise rate as to control the amount of lubricant wetting the yarn contacting surface. Sticking of sizing material to the yarn contacting surface as occurs with wet yarns coated with concentrated sizing solutions is avoided without weakening the size coatings on the yarns.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1981Date of Patent: April 30, 1985Inventors: William H.
