Abstract: A steer axle for a heavy duty vehicle is provided including an axle assembly having an axle housing. A steer knuckle is connected to an end portion of the axle housing by king pins. The steer knuckle rotates relative to the axle housing about the king pins. A wheel end assembly including a brake drum and a pair of brake shoes is supported on an outer wall of the steer knuckle. Preferably, one end of a cam shaft is supported by the wheel end assembly, such as by a spindle. According to the present invention, the steer knuckle includes a boss extending from a portion of the steer knuckle. The boss includes a hole, and preferably, a bushing is received in the hole to support the other end of the cam shaft. Other brake components such as an air chamber, rod, and a brake adjuster are supported by the knuckle and connected to the cam shaft to rotate the cam shaft about its axis and force the brake shoes away from one another with a cam and into engagement with the brake drum.

  • Patent number: 6375205
Abstract: An articulating between two linking parts, said articulation comprising a hinge yoke provided with two non-parallel shafts each defining an axis of rotation and carried by each of the two linking parts respectively, with elastic hinge rings inserted between capable of being stressed in torsion about the axis of rotation of the associated shaft. The invention is characterized in that the hinge yoke is provided with at least one bore for passage of a first shaft with at least an elastic hinge ring inserted between capable of being stressed in torsion about the first shaft axis of rotation (the “first axis of rotation”), such that the relative allowable angular displacement between the linking parts about the first axis of rotation results from the sum of the allowable angular displacement of the linking part relative to the first shaft and the allowable angular displacement of the first shaft relative to the hinge yoke.

  • Patent number: 6334623
Abstract: A steering apparatus for a four-wheeled vehicle transmits a steering force through a steering shaft, a spur gear type reduction gear mechanism, a steering lever and right and left tie rods to right and left knuckles. The reduction gear mechanism includes a pinion gear formed integrally with a pinion shaft, a steering gear mounted on a lever shaft which is combined with the steering lever, and a gear case housing the pinion gear and the steering gear. The steering gear has internal teeth which are engaged with the pinion gear. The lever shaft has a first end portion supported in a bearing held on the gear case. The bearing permits the lever shaft to be turned therein. The lever shaft also has a second end portion supported in a bearing hole. The bearing hole is elongated along the back-and-forth direction so that the second end portion of the lever shaft is able to be shifted along the back-and-forth direction.

  • Patent number: 6325396
Abstract: A vehicle steering assembly includes steerable wheels mounted on half fork members which are pivotally coupled the outer ends of an axle member. A rack and pinion assembly is attached to the axle member and has an input shaft coupled to a steering wheel, and a laterally movable rack member. The outer ends of the rack member are pivotally coupled via a vertical pivot pin to one end of a corresponding tie rod member. The other end of each tie rod member is pivotally coupled to one end of a connecting rod and to one end of a rocker arm. The other end of each connecting rod is pivotally coupled to a corresponding half fork member. The other end of each rocker arm is pivotally coupled to a corresponding outer end of the axle member.
