  • Patent number: 4288898
Abstract: A device (10) for compressing a closure assembly (82) and an O-ring (80) within a control rod drive mechanism for a nuclear reactor in order to seal same. The device (10) applies a predetermined compressive force to the closure assembly (82) and O-ring (80) and has incorporated therein an angularly movable sleeve (18) which engages a lock nut (98) and threadably advances same within the control rod drive mechanism so as to engage the closure assembly (82) and apply the predetermined compressive force to assembly (82) and O-ring (80). After depressurization, lock nut (98) retains closure assembly (82) and O-ring (80) within the control rod drive mechanism by a predetermined residual compressive force.

  • Patent number: 4287498
Abstract: An arrangement is provided for mechanically connecting threaded tuning elements of electrical components to rotators driven by automated apparatus. The arrangement includes tuning tools which provide positive rotation to the tuning elements but which permit relative longitudinal motion between the tuning tools and the tuning elements. The tuning tools further have conical receptacles which are rotated by conical members that self-align with the receptacles. The conical drive members are connected by telescoping and universally joined drive shafts to motors under the control of the automated apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4285112
Abstract: There is disclosed a technique for tightening threaded fasteners in which values of offset torque, initial tension rate relative to angle, final tension rate relative to angle and other joint related factors are empirically determined by instrumenting a plurality of fasteners of the type ultimately to be tightened. In one embodiment, torque and angle are monitored during tightening. Calculations are conducted, while tightening, to determine the tension prevailing in the bolt at a particular angle of advance. By using the calculated tension value and the particular angle of advance, an instantaneous position of threading advance on the tension-angle curve of the fastener is established. From this instantaneous position, it is determined how much greater angle of advance or how much torque is required to tighten the fasteners to a final desired tension value. The same technique may also be used merely to monitor tightening which is terminated by a different tightening strategy.

  • Patent number: 4283830
Abstract: In order to determine whether the screwing home of a threaded element, such as a screw, by a power tool has been acceptably executed, the number of revolutions undergone by the threaded element during the screwing operation is measured as a function of time. The revolution-time function derived for the screwing operation is compared with a reference function corresponding to an acceptable screwing operation. The comparison shows up unacceptable screwing operations and can be performed both visually and by a microcomputer. Apparatus for effecting such monitoring of screwing operations includes sensing means for measuring rotation of the output shaft of the power tool and circuit means for processing the output of the sensing means and effecting the comparison with the reference function.

  • Patent number: 4272209
Abstract: An anti-vandalism nut assembly joins two or more structures and includes a threaded bolt and a specially designed nut which is assembled through the use of another threaded element. Two nuts are each formed with a rectangular or square base and four sloping sides providing a pyramid-like construction extending upwardly from the base. The inner securing nut cannot be rotated by conventional tools when seated tightly in place because of the sloping construction. In assembly or dis-assembly, the outer nut is threaded on the bolt and spaced from the inner nut so that a conventional tool may be wedged between the two nuts for gripping both nuts securely for selective rotation.

  • Patent number: 4265008
Abstract: A tool engageable in a driving device is used for inserting and setting self-drilling dowels of the type consisting of a drill member and a spreader member. The tool is formed of an integral transmission member and plunger and an engaging member laterally encircling the plunger. The transmission member-plunger is axially displaceable relative to the engaging member. Percussive and rotative forces generated in the driving device are transferred into the transmission member-plunger. Projections are formed on the transmission member and engage surfaces on the engaging member for selectively transmitting one or both of the percussive and rotative forces to the drill member. Further, by axially displacing the transmission member-plunger relative to the engaging member, the spreader member can be driven into the drill member for setting or anchoring it within the borehole formed in the receiving material by the drill member.

The containers are clamped in a rotary indexing mechanism which rotates the containers until a discrete opening molded in a top rubber skirt of the container is indexed on a latch mechanism adjacent the conveyor. • Patent number: 4226015

  • Patent number: 4208775
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for making threaded joints, such as pipe joints, within a range of predetermined applied torque and turns values. A pipe or a pipe and a coupling are threaded onto the end of a pipe string. The applied torque is monitored and, when a reference torque is exceeded, the number of turns made is counted. According to a representative aspect of the invention, when either the actual torque or the actual turns are within a predetermined percentage of a predetermined minimum value for that parameter and the other parameter has exceeded a predetermined minimum value, an indication is generated to the operator of the apparatus that he should be ready to stop the joint making operation.

  • Patent number: 4199014
Abstract: A power screwdriver for use with a flexible string of disconnected screws retained in head to tip orientation by attachment to a continuous length of plastic, paper or similar flexible material. The string of screws feeds into a rearward section of a reciprocating shaft of the power screwdriver where the screws are individually advanced into alignment with an engaging bit, the combination bit and shaft being continuously rotated during the course of use. As the forward screw is prepared for engagement by the rotating bit, the retaining plastic or similar material is severed, leaving the forward screw free for emplacement. The screw is engaged and advanced to a forward opening of the shaft by thrust pressure applied by the user to reciprocate the shaft rearward with respect to a power train which is keyed to continuously rotate the shaft and bit. When the thrust pressure is withdrawn, a spring compressed by the rearward motion of the shaft returns the shaft forward to a stable position.
