Patent number: 6668784Abstract: A thread insert and method to replace the damaged threads and tapered seat in a spark plug bore of an internal combustion engine allows for the continued use of the original factory specified spark plugs where the original threads in the spark plug bore have been damaged by stripping or cross threading. The thread insert's inner bore is designed to replace the original threads and tapered seat in the cylinder head. The thread insert may be adapted to fit any internal combustion engine using tapered seat spark plugs, and is particularly useful in deep spark plug bores with limited access as found in the aluminum heads in Ford modular engines. The insert includes a flange head that determines how far into the head the insert can extend and a recess below the flange to collect any bonding agent that may be squeezed from the threads during installation of the insert. Special tools make the installation of the insert easy and accurate.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2002Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Inventors: Gary Sellers, Michael L. Shiffermiller

Patent number: 6516865Abstract: In a hollow-cast component, a core opening (13) created during manufacturing is closed with a closure piece (14). This closure piece is located inside a recess (15) in the component, whereby the recess is arranged so that it is imbedded completely in the cast material, and completely covers the core opening. Because of this installation, the closure piece is fixed in a form-fitting manner in the direction of two spatial axes, so that the closure piece only needs to be secured with an additional joint in the installation direction. It is preferred that the installation direction is normal in relation to the direction of maximal stress of the closure piece, so that a joint is subject to a relatively small stress and therefore can be produced with little expenditure and a high degree of operational safety.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2000Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: AlstomInventors: Alexander Beeck, Erhard Kreis, Ibrahim El-Nashar, Beat Von Arx

Patent number: 6474285Abstract: An inexpensive method for repairing a damaged spark plug hole of a cylinder engine includes drilling the damaged spark plug hole using a drill bit, tapping the drilled spark plug hole, threading a steel insert into the threaded hole and making a spark plug seat. The depth of the drilling, tapping and threading is limited by a stopper. A set of new tools are used to realize the foregoing process. All these procedures can be done while the cylinder having the damaged spark plug hole on the vehicle. The resulting hole is stronger and more durable than the original spark plug hole in the aluminum cylinder head.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2001Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Inventor: Tansil L.
