  • Patent number: 6374493
Abstract: A two-piece tire rim is prepared from a molded, one-piece wheel casting which is generally cup-shaped in configuration. The casting, which is open at one end and closed at its opposite end, has an inner annular recess formed coaxially in the inner surface of its closed end, and has formed coaxially in its outer peripheral surface an external annular recess radially spaced from, and in axial registry with an internal annular recess. The casting is separated into two separate sections by cutting through the casting in a circular path extending from the external annular recess to the internal annular recess, thereby producing a generally annular shaped inner rim section, and a generally disc-shaped outer rim section. The two rim sections are then machined to final form, and are secured together to form the desired two-piece tire rim.

  • Patent number: 6314643
Abstract: A method for making a multiple piece crankshaft from a shaft and a crankpin is disclosed. A notch is first machined on an intermediate section of the shaft such that the notch has a length slightly less than the length of the crankpin. Mating surfaces are then formed on the shaft at opposite ends of the notch. Thereafter, the crankpin is positioned on the mating surfaces on the shaft so that the crankpin is parallel to and spaced from an axis of the shaft. The ends of the crankpin are then secured to the mating surfaces formed on the crankshaft and a portion of the intermediate section of the shaft is then removed by machining. A counterweight is finally positioned over each end of the crankpin at its juncture with the main shaft and secured to the crankpin and shaft thereby forming the crankshaft. Alternatively, the crankpin is positioned on mating surfaces formed on the counterweights and fasteners then secure the crankpin, counterweights and main shaft together.

  • Patent number: 5416962
Abstract: A vibration damper is formed from two metal layers. The first metal layer is coated with primer layers, slit, and partially stamped to form a strip holding a plurality of vibration damper blanks. Each of these blanks has a body portion and tab portions. A second metal layer is formed separately by coating a second metal strip with adhesive and stamping it to form a plurality of vibration damper blanks but without tabs. The two strips are aligned, bonded together and the vibration dampers are formed and stamped out. (The tabs, which are only on one layer, are bent to form clips.) Due to this construction the clips cannot delaminate and provide a noiseless metal contact with the shoe plate, while an improved adhesive can be employed to bond the two metal layers together.

  • Patent number: 5407122
Abstract: A method for fastening an elastic sealing ring on a pipe includes the steps of applying a base portion of the sealing ring against the circumferential surface of the pipe, and placing a clamping strap under tension around the outer face of the base portion. The clamping strap is secured to the pipe by spot-welding in at least two welding spots, the spot-welding operation being carried out with the material of the sealing ring located between the clamping strap and the pipe. A device for fastening the sealing ring on the pipe is provided which comprises, in addition to the clamping-strap supply, a movable assembly for feeding the clamping strap to the pipe; an assembly for applying the strap on the base portion of the sealing ring; a unit for spot-welding the clamping strap to the pipe; and a friction-exerting mechanism for gripping and exerting a braking action on the clamping strap.

Abstract: A carrier frame has cells with inwardly extending thin flexible tabs. Pressure sensor housings are molded into the frame cells such that only the tips of the tabs penetrate the housing wall and after processing the housings are readily pushed out of the frame. A lead frame is insert molded at the same time. During molding the cells of the frame are open ended and after molding a reinforcing tie bar is attached across the open side of the frame to close the cells. A flange is bent up on the opposite side to lend rigidity to the frame. Preformed code flags are provided in the frame and selectively bent out for coding.

  • Patent number: 5371946
Abstract: The present invention relates to games for use on windows and glass doors and methods of making same, and particularly, methods of making a thermally broken window or door frame made from two frame members that are connected by an insulating member. Existing methods of making thermally broken hollow frame members from two frame members either are complex and time consuming and complex or present difficulties in aligning the two frame members prior to pouring the thermal barrier material. The present invention provides the use of a guide to hold the frame members and am elastomersic gasket which forces the frame members tightly inot the guide and seals the liquid-receiving channel. The frame members can then be inverted in the guide and the process repeated to produce a hollow thermally broken frame.

  • Patent number: 5368797
Abstract: A cover assembly for an internal combustion engine includes sleeves that are connected with a cover member by rubber bodies. The rubber bodies decouple the cover member from structure-borne sound from the engine. Depending on its configuration, the cover assembly may be used as an oil pan or a valve hood. The cover assembly is made from a cover blank which includes the cover member, the sleeves, and webs which connect the sleeves to the cover member. The cover blank is placed in a mold. The webs break and the sleeves are axially displaced with respect to the cover member as the mold is closed. An elastomer material is then injected into the mold to form the rubber bodies.

  • Patent number: 5359761
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of making a header or housing for connection to a semi-conductor device including the step of trimming a single terminal frame molded into the header while the header or housing is in the molding cavity. To accomplish this, the present invention utilizes a single terminal frame including a plurality of substantially parallel electrical connection fingers held together at one end by a tie-bar. The terminal frame has a "V-notch" in each of the electrical connection fingers at a location adjacent the tie-bar. The terminal frame is placed in a mold having an upper and lower mold shell each having cavities formed therein which together define the header or housing to be molded. The upper and lower mold shells come together and grasp the terminal frame at a position adjacent the notch and so that the tie-bar extends outwardly from the upper and lower mold shells.

  • Patent number: 5340022
Abstract: The invention concerns a heating system or air conditioning system for vehicles having a heater box and an operator unit which has to be arranged separately from the heater box in the passenger compartment. In order to hold the operator unit on the heater box until the point of final assembly and for the purpose of adjusting the operator unit during preassembly, a two-part assembly aid element is provided, of which one part is firmly connected to the heater box and the other part is firmly connected to the operator unit so that the operator unit is fixed so that it cannot be varied until final assembly on the heater box. In order to configure the assembly aid element so that it can be manufactured simply and at low cost, its two parts are formed by two plug-in parts of a plug-in connection which can be pushed one into the other and a clip-type interlock is included in the plug-in connection.

  • Patent number: 5235742
Abstract: A ribbon conductor set and related method of production and installation are provided for electrically interconnecting components in an implantable medical device, such as a heart pacemaker unit or the like. The ribbon conductor set is formed by die cutting and/or stamping a thin plate of conductive material to define a plurality of conductor ribbons supported from a frame. The ribbon set and supporting frame are shaped for seated placement into a fixture to orient the conductor ribbons in predetermined array to extend between electrical components on the fixture, such as between connector blocks and feedthrough terminals of a heart pacemaker unit. The fixture thus supports the conductor ribbons for facilitated connection to the electrical components, such as by welding, after which the resultant subassembly may be further processed as by encapsulation within a cast epoxy head or the like.
