Advancing Work To Successive Stations (i.e., Assembly Line) Patents (Class 29/430)
  • Patent number: 8806739
Abstract: In a framing system for framing motor-vehicle bodies or sub-assemblies thereof, the body to be framed is located and clamped in position during the assembling operations by side locating and clamping structures (8). Each of these structures comprises a rigid supporting structure (82) including a base platform (82a) and a frame (81) which carries locating and clamping devices (D). The base platform (82a) is dimensioned in the direction parallel to a body conveyor line with a standard length proportionated to the length of the longest body type on which the system is to operate. Pillars (82b) for supporting the frame (81) are mounted on the platform (82a) at positions which are selected between different possible positions, displaced relative to each other longitudinally and/or transversely. Thus, the side locating and clamping structures (8) can be configured easily for different types of body and the system is able to operate on body types having also very relevant differences in length and/or width.

  • Patent number: 8782874
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus for pre-plating railway ties, including switch ties of varying lengths. An infeed deck and singulator feeds individual ties, each provided with identifying indicia, to a pre-scanner. Using the scanned indicia, a control system accesses stored data to determine a preliminary drill pattern. A scanning and drilling station positions, secures and scans the tie. The scan results are combined with the stored data to produce a corrected optimal drill pattern, which is used to drill the tie. The drilled tie moves to a plate and screw loading station, where the proper plates and fasteners are attached. A fourth station inspects the assembled tie. If it is properly assembled, the screw spikes are tightened and the plated tie moves to an outfeed deck, where it is marked for identification and removed for storage and shipping.

Abstract: A method of inverting a vehicle assembly includes initially supporting the vehicle assembly with a first frame element relative to a surface, and positioning the first frame element and the vehicle assembly relative a second frame element, such that at least a portion of the vehicle assembly is disposed between the first and second frame elements. The method also includes selectively engaging at least one turning apparatus with the first frame element, and rotating the first frame element, the vehicle assembly, and the second frame element about a longitudinal axis extending through the vehicle assembly via the at least one turning apparatus from a first position to a second position. The method also includes selectively disengaging the at least one turning apparatus from the second frame element and subsequently supporting the vehicle assembly with the second frame element relative to the surface.

  • Patent number: 8312611
Abstract: A first holding frame of a component holding unit is allowed to hold a plurality of components composing a first assembly and a second holding frame of the component holding unit is allowed to hold a plurality of components composing a second assembly which is to be mounted on the first assembly. The first assembly held onto the first holding frame and the second assembly held onto the second holding frame are assembled by an assembly work unit. The second holding frame is allowed to reciprocate towards the first holding frame to pass the second assembly from the second holding, frame to the first holding frame. Thereafter, the first assembly and the second assembly which are held onto the first holding frame are assembled and coupled together by the assembly work unit.

  • Patent number: 8308048
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing the delivery of component parts and tooling to a robotic welding assembly positioned on a motor vehicle body assembly line. Automatic guided vehicles deliver component parts from a source of parts to a parts staging area on the robotic welding assembly including a substage awaiting area, a substage in-use area and a substage empty area, and further automatic guided vehicles deliver tooling from a tooling management area to the robotic welding assembly whereafter the tooling, upon model changeover, is moved to a tooling use area proximate the assembly line whereafter, upon further model changeover, the tooling is removed from the tooling use area and loaded onto an automatic guided vehicle for return to the tooling management area.

  • Patent number: 8272122
Abstract: A tube mill apparatus and process for continuously forming and coating a tube with a braze alloy. The apparatus and process produce a continuously moving welded tube by continuously forming and welding a tubing material, after which the welded tube is passed through a sizing station to establish a desired outer shape and desired outer dimensions for the welded tube. The braze alloy is then deposited on a roughened surface of the welded tube that is clean and free of oils and coolants. The braze alloy is deposited with a wire arc spray gun that heats a wire of a metallic material and causes the heated metallic material to travel in a direction transverse to the direction of tube travel and deposit on the roughened surface of the tube to form an adherent layer of the braze alloy. Finally, any bow in the welded tube is removed as the tube travels away from the spray gun.
