The improvements result from the formation of an integral cardcage side using a construction method involving precision punched sheet aluminum that is precision formed into final configuration. The integral cardcage side design provides ease of assembly for the cardcage while enhancing structural integrity, improves the alignment of circuit cards within the cardcage to the backplane, increases the airflow channels between the card guides, and adapts to incorporate additional features for airflow control. The manufacturability of the cardcage is greatly simplified by reducing the number of parts requiring assembly and by the use of simple and inexpensive tools and assembly techniques.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1999Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: L-3 Communications Integrated Systems, L.P.Inventors: Robert H. Patent number: 6688000Abstract: In attempting to reduce deformity when joining vehicle frame components, a riveting/brazing process has been proposed. This process includes joining tubular members, such as hydroformed parts, by cutting at least one flange into one end of a first body member, shaped in conformance with the surface of a second body member. Location holes are formed into each flange as well as into the surface of the second member in suitable alignment with each other. A brazing filler material is fixed into a side of the flange, usually within a pocket, intending to lie on the surface of the second member when the two structures are attached. The flange(s) are initially attached to the surface of the second member by means of a rivet to formed an actual vehicle body assembly. Heat is then applied to the assembly to form a brazed T-joint.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2001Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Pei-Chung Wang, Peter C. Patent number: 6672125Abstract: A method for fabricating an Invar tool includes the step of superplastically forming an Invar facesheet for the tool. A tool header is provided, and the Invar facesheet is then formed with an SPF diaphragm driver to match the predetermined contour of the tool header. The Invar facesheet is then welded to the tool header. Forming the Invar facesheet is achieved by positioning the Invar facesheet between a superplastically formable diaphragm and a die having the predetermined contour. The diaphragm is heated to a predetermined superplastic temperature, and a predetermined pressure is applied to the diaphragm. Application of the predetermined pressure allows the diaphragm to cause the Invar facesheet to form against the predetermined contour of the die. Superplastically forming the Invar facesheet results in a negligible amount of excess scrap, reduces material costs, and reduces labor costs.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2003Date of Patent: January 6, 2004Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Phillip E. Patent number: 6606778Abstract: A windshield can be installed in a centered position on a frontal surface of an automotive vehicle body by temporarily clamping two upstanding guides to side edge areas of the vehicle body. When the windshield is lowered onto the frontal surface of the vehicle body the facing surfaces on the upstanding guides will cam the windshield into a centered position on the frontal surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 2000Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: DaimlerChrysler CorporationInventors: Craig R. Patent number: 6508907Abstract: A crown installation system for forming a crown in place on a pillar in a manner that avoids the need for heavy and complicated concrete form structures. The crown installation system includes a kit for forming a crown on a pillar, such as a chimney, having a perimeter wall with an outer surface and an upper surface converging at an outer upper perimeter edge. The kit includes a plurality of form members, with each form member being adapted for forming a portion of the outer surface of the crown. Each of the form members has opposite ends and an outer face. A plurality of support members are provided for supporting the form members. Each of the support members has a front surface for pressing against a portion of the outer surface of one of the form members. A tension member is provided for holding the support members in position against the form members such that the form members are restricted from outward movement. The invention also includes a method of utilizing the kit to form a crown on a pillar.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2000Date of Patent: January 21, 2003Inventor: Monte Lutz

Patent number: 6360422Abstract: A method of securing a mounting bracket on a wall of a structural member comprises inserting lugs of the mounting bracket through slots through a wall of the member and securing the lugs to an inside surface of the wall. The mounting bracket is used for mounting the structural member within a cabinet by sliding the member in snug fit within a cabinet, the internal securing of the lugs avoiding interference with the snug fitting relationship.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1999Date of Patent: March 26, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies, IncInventor: Lit-Yan Kam

Patent number: 6334245Abstract: An air bag gas generator has a cylindrical member that permits reliable welding of the cylindrical member with an inner surface of a ceiling portion of a housing even if the welding surface is slightly misaligned. It furthermore permits welding in such a manner (a more stable manner) that unsteadiness does not occur in the area where the inner surface of the ceiling portion of the housing and the inner cylindrical member abuts. In the air bag gas generator, which includes the inner cylindrical member in the housing, the inner cylindrical member has a peripheral wall portion bent to form a flattened surface portion as an extension of the one of that cylindrical member where it joins the inner surface of the ceiling portion.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 2001Date of Patent: January 1, 2002Assignee: Daicel Chemical Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Nobuyuki Katsuda, Shogo Tomiyama

Patent number: 6308411Abstract: A sidewall skin is provided having a front edge, rear edge, top edge, and bottom edge, and a first exterior side and a second interior side. An inwardly directed front flange is provided along the front edge, and an inwardly directed flange is also provided along the top edge. The sidewall skin has a inwardly stepped transition region spaced rearwardly of the front edge. A rear corner is formed in the skin at a location forwardly of the rear edge and rearwardly of the transition region. A portion of the skin between the rear edge and rear corner forms part of the back wall of the truck cab. The sidewall skin is preferably adhesively secured to a sidewall framework with fasteners being virtually eliminated during the sidewall assembly process. The adhesive may be heat cured, which may involve a first partial heat curing step to provide the sidewall with handling strength followed by a second heat curing step. The second step is typically accomplished during curing of paint after a truck cab is assembled.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1996Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Assignee: Freightliner LLCInventors: Homer Franklin Wright, Jr., Edmond Kalstiantz, James Edward Hill
