    Abstract: An apparatus and method for lifting a plurality of reinforcing bars (rebars) all at one time, and holding them in vertical position while they are connected one at a time to the upper ends of steel elements such as bolts or reinforcing bars protruding from concrete. The apparatus has an elongate lower element with a row of blind holes or recesses in its upper end to receive the lower ends of the bars. An elongate upper element has a row of through holes in registry with the blind holes. The two elements are held apart by cables. A cover on the side of the upper element opens so that the sides of the through holes are exposed so that the bars can be loaded on the sides of the through holes and into the blind holes. The cover is then closed and the apparatus lifted by a crane from the upper element to a position close to the steel elements. Each bar is then lifted from the blind hole, while sliding in the through hole. It is then connected to a steel element.

    Abstract: A mandrel segment loader provides a reliable means of assembling the segments of a large multi-piece mandrel designed for the lay-up of composite materials in the manufacture of large structures such as one-piece fuselage barrels for wide-body aircraft and can also be used for removing the mandrel from the finished fuselage barrel by disassembling the segments. The mandrel segment loader provides transport and multi-axis positioning for the segments, which may weigh as much as 25,000 pounds, with linear positioning resolution in the realm of 0.002 inch and rotational positioning resolution in the realm of 0.005 degree. The mandrel segment loader is also more generally useful as a material handling system that can perform many useful manufacturing functions, such as loading passenger floors into a fuselage barrel when assembling an aircraft. Self-locking grippers prevent accidental self-release of a load.

    Abstract: A parts holding device that includes a holder with a row of spaced-apart cavities, within which parts may be disposed. A bar containing a plurality of spaced-apart permanent magnets is movably mounted to the holder and is disposed parallel to the row of the cavities. The bar is movable in the direction of the row of the cavities between first and second positions. When the bar is in the first position, the magnets are aligned with the cavities and the magnetic attraction forces generated by the magnets hold the parts in the cavities, and when the bar is in the second position, the magnets are not aligned with the cavities and the magnetic attraction forces generated by the magnets do not hold the parts in the cavities. The parts holding device is connected to a movable mounting structure for movement therewith. The bar is biased to the first position and is moved to the second position by movement of the bar against a cam surface.

A solid connection is subsequently produced, for example, by way of high temperature welding. Advantages of the method include the selection of optimum materials for the processing elements; the fabrication process is flexible; and the method is especially economical, when measured by the quality of the produced fillings.

    Abstract: To erect metal utility poles, a plurality of tubular sections of utility poles are fabricated, each having tapered portions and the diameter of one being slightly larger than the diameter of another. The sections are brought to a site for erection and pulled together with short repeated strokes of a hydraulic cylinder attached to one section with its piston rod connected to another section of utility pole. In one embodiment it is not necessary to manually adjust the mechanism pulling the sections of utility poles together and in another embodiment, a light flexible cord is attached to one section and a hydraulic cylinder to another section. The hydraulic cylinder pulls the cord and when the piston rod is extended for the next retraction, the cord length is adjusted.

The method further includes laying up a composite laminate skin over all the vacuum zones; separating the composite laminate skin into portions, for example, a first portion over the first vacuum zone and a second portion over the second vacuum zone; and releasing the portions individually into cure tools having an outside mold line surface.

The frame and transport assemblies are disposed such that the cart may be rotated or pivoted from a first generally vertical position to a second generally horizontal position.

The cartridge-receiving plate is aligned relative to the base. A top riser is adjustably mounted to the base, and a cylinder arm, which holds the plunging apparatus, is non-adjustably mounted to the top riser.

After mounting the fixture to a combustor component, the jaws can engage an inner peripheral surface of a transition so as to properly align the transition with a target axis of alignment. The fixture can be configured to measure the size of any shims needed at the base of the flexible support bracket. Further, the fixture can also include various gauges to validate the alignment of the inlet end of the transition.
